Just wanted to share what I've been working on for the past few days, this piece took about 3 days, and there's still a few things I'm not quite happy with, but I've been staring at it for so long that I can't see it properly anymore. I think I'm quite ready to call it finished and move on to something new.
Original pic was linked from another thread here (thanks for the link Mokyomi!)
And here's the piece, pencils and 9 x 12 sketchpad, levels adjusted in photoshop
I made the mistake of not saving enough room for the umbrella, so when it came time to work on that, I noticed that I'd only be able to draw the edges of the umbrella at certain points. Instead of doing that I opted to just erase after a certain distance and fade it out.
By the way, those kinds of umbrellas SUCK to draw. I'm never going to draw one of those things again >< |

Sketching with pencil is really hard, especially when you're drawing humans. Anyway, the drawing you posted looks good! Maybe the facial structure can be improved a little but it's good enough the way it is right now. I don't think I can draw that well.
You seems to hate the umbrella but I think it looks better than anything else! I think you get the texture on the umbrella right, the kimono is not too bad too. Well, I think I suddenly feel the itch to pick up my pen and draw something after seeing this. I'll see if I can pull out some fanart myself lol. |

Thanks for the comments everyone I agree about the face eyn, that's one of the things I'm not completely satisfied with, but I spent about 3 hours on just the face alone, because I couldn't get the angle of the face right. If you guys could see the sketchbook, the paper under the face is all rough because of all the erasing I did haha
I almost didn't draw the umbrella lol. After I finished the body I spent a LONG time staring at it wondering how I would plan it out and fill it in. By that time I was so tired from the kimono that I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend another day on the umbrella, but I had already drawn the handle/rod. It was either finish it, or draw a curtainrod or a flag or something I'm happy with the way it turned out, but I wouldn't do it again.
boboai (and everyone else who's interested) : I'm not a very good teacher, but I know who is - go to this site:
www.saveloomis.org
and download the books there. They're in pdf format, and are made available there because those books are out of print now, and are still regarded as great teaching material. They're written around the 1940's though, so don't be surprised at the strange vocabulary.
I still haven't finished reading all of those, and am still learning myself. Believe it or not, I couldn't draw a year ago!
edit - you know I just realized something, a couple of those books teach artistic anatomy, so consider yourself warned. I forgot that we have some younger members on this board and I don't want to get them in trouble. If that's inapropriate, I'll remove the link, do let me know |

WOOW That's impressive! The umbrella sure is hard believe me I've tried Yours look great even if you're unpleasant with it. I think the nose need's a bit more shading and then it'll look good ^^ |

hehe thanks guys, I'm still learning when it comes to faces, but noses especially, I have a hard time finding that balance between looking flat, and looking like a piggy nose |
