Quote: I bet internet plays a major role for spreading the seed of Jpop, but there gotta be something to trigger this Jpop monster inside you.
Without the internet i wouldnt be able to have the chance to listen to other music besides what is in the charts. That is all they sell in the stores here.
I got tired of the music in the charts, and started searching amazon for foreign music, and got into spanish music.
I was going through a list which also had BoA's cd single 'double' listed, and i thought i'd give it a try. Had never even heard of japanese music before..
I liked the song, it was catchy and i bought some more stuff ( i didnt know of bittorrent and sites where you could download music, so i bought a lot, hehe).
I bought utada's 'sakura drops' and i was hooked.
I accidentaly stumbled upon a bittorent tracker with only japanese music. The first video i saw with ayumi was 'carols' and i loved it.
From there it just went on.
The best pv i've ever seen has to be ai's 'kingyo hanabi'
it is WONDEFUL!!
Thats how i got into jpop |

With me it was an accidental download...I accidently downloaded the song Wait & See~RISK by Utada Hikaru. I thought it was okay, but nothing too special. But, I didn't want to delete it because I'll feel bad (I'm weird like that). So I began to listen to it more and was "Hey...this is kinda catchy" ha ha. So, yeah, Hikki was my JPop exposure. Then, I discovered Hamasaki Ayumi and the first song I heard was "Boys & Girls" <3. I loved it so much, better than Wait & See~RISK. Then I downloaded some songs from Do As Infinity, hitomi, and Amuro Namie. I really liked Do As Infinity, but didn't like Amuro that much. My first song from hitomi was "CANDY GIRL", and I thought it was cute, but it sounded sooo different from what I was used to hearing on the radio, so I never researched her (but now I love her). Then I d/led L'Arc~en~Ciel's "Driver's High" and I thought that that was kinda weird sounding, too. Then, like Hikki, I began listening and listening more and more and I became so addicted and began to search for more songs, and all of them were top notch!!
Then I discovered websites like J-Fan and began researching artists. I needed to know info about every artist I listened to, and I was searching fansites like crazy!! lol. I discovered artists like Gackt, Dir en grey, dream, globe, LUNA SEA, X Japan, Malice Mizer, etc. and I loved everything I heard from them. The only artists I couldn't really get into was MISIA and Amuro Namie and I gave up on them. But, I've rediscovered Namie and love the song "the SPEED STAR"! It's so great.
And then last year I discovered Ootsuka Ai with the song "momo NO hana BIRA" and I thought it was cute and I loved the beat. Then, I searched for her and saw that she was a new artist and she only releases two singles during that time "momo NO hana BIRA" and "sakurambo". And, here I am now!
JPop came at a good time for me because I was getting sooo bored with the American mainstream. I was in eighth grade and my friends would ask if I've heard a song, and I'd be like "what? who's that?". So, yeah, JPop is a refresher. Also, I never smiled 'cause I was a sad child, but after discovering Laruku, they put the biggest smile on my face!! Every time I get something of them in the mail my mom always has to point out my huge smile!! ha ha. So, I <3 them to death. They have a special place in my heart.
...ooo maybe i shouldn't write so much? ... |

I just it was just one of those transition things . I've been a pretty hardcore Jrock fan (The Pillows, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, etc) and after awhile I started listening to Jpop as well. |

i was brought up on japanese anime since i was a baby by my older brothers and came to love the language and comedy and music that i belong to...i dont know how to speak it...i want to learn! anyways, i grew up on it and with the interest in J-Rock and Pop increasing, its so much easier to find people with the same interests as you! |

I liked Japanese Anime first since it was so big here in the Philippines, especially when i was nine years old when Dragon Ball Z and Yuu yuu hakusho (known here as Ghost Fighter) was shown here. I got so hooked that I became a huge anime fan. I liked the opening and ending themes of Animes but i never did get hooked to J-pop music which wasnt used as an anime theme song. The only artist i knew of was Utada Hikaru, since her CD was sold in some record stores here. But it all changed mainly because of two events.
The first was when listened to Ayumi Hamasaki's "Moments" just last year, which made me buy her A Bestalbum when I was in Chinatown in Las Vegas
The second was when BoA's Atlantis Princess video was shown as a nominee in the MTV Asia Awards 2004. I actually saw this video in a Korean channel six months before the MTV asia awards and I liked it then. Sadly, I forgot to take note of the title of the song. So I was elated when i saw this video on MTV half a year later. I saw her performance of rock with you on the awards show and i didn't like the song. but it made me research on her more and i sooon liked her a lot more. And then i suddenly became a huge j-pop fan |

BoA's J Milky was got me into Jpop. Totally awesome stuff, that and Ai Otsuka herself with Sakuranbo =]. It was like the ultimate anti-depressent. Ever since, been adding to my collection with chart hits, recomendations and anime singles.

i was once an innocent little child being afraid of the people in the internet..last march (of 2004) i finally overcame myself and enter a sims (the game) community wow apparently some people there liked ayu and having her at their sigs, mentioning her name at what u listening to threads etc etc..i got banned from there but fortunately i had become msn friends with a girl who really liked her..also i before i was banned from there someone made a thread about who ayu is and ther was posted a list by a good member and good person and good friend Link (not his real name of course lol) i downloaded evolution from that list then got hooked..chattin with that girl helped a lot and soon i became an ayu fan..after going to ayumi-hamasaki.org forum there were plenty of downloads and got to meet with boas music and apparently with dear ai ^__^ i got obssesed by listening to kingyo hanabi and sakuranbo so here i am being a very good fan of her..yay!
thats all..probably u wont read whole this >_< |

i was introduced to j-pop by my ex who showed me hikki's distance album and i immediatley became addicted!! his sister was a huge huge fan of ayu, and thats how i became an ayu fan too!
i was a little narrow minded thou, only listening to those two artists. it wasnt until recently when i discovered other artists like ai, amuro, DAI, XJapan, L'arc-en-ciel and so on.
i found out about ai when i was reading a thread about a survey asking people which celebrity that they would most like to be or something and ai was number 1 so i thought i would check her out, and now i love her hehehehe |

I got exposed to J-Pop when I went back to Taiwan back in 2001. There wasnt much to do so I was watching lots of MTV over there, and that is how I got into J-Pop and some C-Pop. I found J-Pop's PV more artistic and interesting so I would pay attention more. The firwst few artist that I remember liking/following is Morning Musume (The Peace!) Utada (Can You kKeep a Secret?) and Every Little Thing (Graceful World)
Then when I came back to the US I start following Morning Musume and eventually Ayumi Hamasaki.
P.S. Yeah I remember seeing Ken Hirai the first time in Japan (Kiss of Life) I was like no way that guy is Japanese!! |
