I don't think its childish. She has a cute voice and her songs are very much mature. I just he just listened to the voice and thought it as childish but you can judge a book by its cover. The meanings behind every song is deep.

What's the definition of childish here? Is it because the song is happy, and the lyrics is simple? Why should we try to be adult and complicate things when happy is just a simple thing?

There's always people who do stupid stuff thinking that they look cool, have a look at rap artist like 50cents and eminem... those are the definition of childish. I mean, you don't have to use foul words to express an idea do you? (sorry if you like eminem of 50cents, just an example)

The more you try to look cool, the more childish you look like. (like some teenagers that think smoking makes them cool, in fact it's chilidish + noobish) Only people who express their trueself are the people who know how to behave.

Hi

I had a funny experience this weekend. I had a visit from a cousin who also likes japanese culture. I show him the SMILEY PV (one of my favorites right now) and he was like... "dude, that is for kids". Of course, coming from a guy that listen to progressive rock and heavy metal... i somehow knew that he would dislike the bright colors and the goofy men in the pv.

I listen a bit to Metal myself as well I still love Ai and her music. Maybe it was just that song/PV that he disliked?.. did you happen to show him other Ai PV's as well afterwords?

Right now i only have found one person who likes Ai... a guy that also likes Morning Musume, W and other Hello Project like girl bands.

Heh, what are the odds of that... I, too, happen to love MoMusu/H!P as well. Wink

Here in Costa Rica, this kind of sweet, happy jpop is not popular at all among the anime/manga fandom. The people here love to hear rock bands like Dir in Grey (specially girls) or "more serious" jpop acts like Hikaru Utada and Ayumi Hamasaki (among guys).

Really??.. wow thats a surprise. Considering the fact that some of Anime J-Pop artists, thier voices and songs are sweet and happy as well. Maybe if they'd listen to more of her music and knew some more info about her, they would think and take Ai as a serious artist as well.

Side story: I was recently at Anime Expo 2005 and was waiting in line to get the tickets the day before the event started. To kill time mainly while waiting in line, I decided to play some random PV's I had on my laptop. One of the random PV's happen to be SMILY and as soon as it reached the 00:10 point of the video, I turned back and had a few people watching over my shoulder and back. As the PV kept on playing, I looked and saw random people had either a smile or laughter on thier faces. I assumed they liked it since some of them were asking the artists name and/or song title afterwords. I was sorta surprised that none of them knew who she was, even after I told them heh.

Then i wonder... Is Ai´s music too sweet or childish for the western taste? or is this happening only in fandom of my country?

I really think it was just some peoples taste and them either not liking it and some do like it. I don't think its childish imo. She is just expressing her fun, happy and loving style through her music and personality as well.

i agree. i don't understand why these artists like to use foul language on tv.

actually, this is one of the main reason why i like ai: life is dull and harsh enough, so i often use upbeat music to brighten my day. of course, the slow songs has a different effect. i usually look into the lyrics and see how it relates or can be related to daily life

[edit] another reason why i like ai's music is cause i'm a big kid at heart. sometimes i like to pretend life is perfect and go into my imaginary (sp?) world.

Those "childish" songs will last forever in our hearts more than a heavy metal song...

SMILY is my favourite, and i respect your friends comments though, but SMILY has a really easy melody to remember and i am sure i can revise them to my great grandchildren and show them the chicken move!
Everyone of my friends love it ! Well, maybe because we are girls who likes cute things like Sanrio stuff and Elmo, but all of my guy friends just cant stop doing the SMILY move and singing them.

When i show them to little kids they just love it, more people of any age most likely to fall in love with SMILY than heavy metal songs, i reckon anyway.

It's something easy to remember, understand and love than rock n roll...

I don't think her music is childish, I think it's just that she has such a cute voice that some of her songs have to have a cute background to go along with it! ^^ And her slow songs arent childish at all.

I don't think Ai's music is childish at all. Yes, she does have some happy songs, is that wrong? I think if she sang sad songs all the time she'd get bored and so would her fans. She has a happy-go-lucky attitude and I think it's infectious when she sings fun songs like "SMILY" and "Happy Days". She's just being herself instead of supressing it, which is a good thing, I think. It's uplifting. Besides songs like those, she does have some more serious/dark songs. If you still don't believe me, listen to songs like "Shabondama", etc.

Right on the nose, eyn and Aprillis! Sakuranbo brought me into Ai's world through it's cute, up-beat sound. It can still take me away from the daily grind...

People are often quick to label anything as "below themselves" in order to seem better/more mature/smarter/etc. Usually, they're looking down their noses at something absolute or completely devoted to it's opinion/stance/character. In this case, it was Ai's SMILY pv and the term "childish" (here, imo, meaning immature and devoid of seriousness) was used to quickly label and put down her style/actions because it made the viewer uncomfortable. It boils down to an issue of self-esteem. Saying you like something opens you up for criticism--makes you vulnerable. The viewer, unwilling to take that risk, is then quick to dismiss anything new or of a catagory in which he usually doesn't partake.

In my opinion, Ai's music could sincerely be described as "childish" in her intense optimism and tales of naivete and growth through the twists of love (and fate, thinking of Daisuki dayo... Crying ). It is best exampled in Neko ni Fuusen which is all about how even in this sad world, love still indeed exists. An uplifting demeanor and child-like optimism is what she's guilty of. People are just too concerned with appearances or are too jaded to open themselves up to her world. Their loss, tho, ne? Wink

I think her "hyperactive" songs are childish but those are the songs that don't get on my playlist. Actually, I mostly listen to J-rock and Ai is the only J-pop artist in my music library. I began listening to her music for the slower songs in order to take a break from fast paced rock I usually listen to.

kinda same here.
I actually like the slow songs of ai.
I still like happy days or smily, but i prefer to listen to kingyo hanabi, cherish etc.

her music to me is cute jpop. but she can do different modes of music. Such as Kingyo Hanabi. That's a pretty mature song wouldn't you say?

Cute, but I wouldn't say childish. Her personality is childish, but im pretty sure she can be serious too. Just like any of us.
