I had a funny experience this weekend. I had a visit from a cousin who also likes japanese culture. I show him the SMILEY PV (one of my favorites right now) and he was like... "dude, that is for kids". Of course, coming from a guy that listen to progressive rock and heavy metal... i somehow knew that he would dislike the bright colors and the goofy men in the pv.

But, to my sorprise, when i visit a good friend of mine, who also likes jpop, he told me that he didn´t like the pv... he tought that it was a bad video and that Ai´s voice is too sweet for his taste.

Right now i only have found one person who likes Ai... a guy that also likes Morning Musume, W and other Hello Project like girl bands.

Here in Costa Rica, this kind of sweet, happy jpop is not popular at all among the anime/manga fandom. The people here love to hear rock bands like Dir in Grey (specially girls) or "more serious" jpop acts like Hikaru Utada and Ayumi Hamasaki (among guys).

Then i wonder... Is Ai´s music too sweet or childish for the western taste? or is this happening only in fandom of my country?

i think Ai's music is kinda like Kawaii~ and i think it depends on each person that if he/she likes which kind of music. Like my friend...i let her listen to Ai's song and she say that it just not her type cuz she prefer more of "ROCK" music but i don't really like ROcK music (except Linkin' Park!) cuz i started to get annoyed when i hear it Nod

My friend told me that Ai has a very sweet voice but that's about all nothing negative about it.

my life is too dull and i need ai otsuka's music to keep me alive. when i 1st heard her voice i liked it immediately. not all her music are that so-called "childish" like smiley or pon-pon. she also has more serious songs like kingyo hanabi and daisukidayo which are equally engaging.

Before i got into Ai ... I compared her music to MM's only because i listened to sakuranbo, and it was so happy-go-lucky like MM's material.
But then i started listening to her slower songs, and it just grew on me ... but i wouldn't say her music is "childish". It's just really happy songs complemented with her somewhat high pitched voice.

Good topic. I think some of Ai's music is a little childish, but in a good way! Sometimes, it gets boring always listening to sad and serious artists. Or artists who are trying so hard to be "cool" all the time. Laughing So that's why, even though I like Ayumi Hamasaki and other singers OK, I find Ai's music much more fun to sing along to. Boogie And if that's 'childish' than I'm happy to have that label. The slower songs aren't childish really. But there, too, I don't get the impression that Ai is trying to be ultra-cool in her PVs. She's just being herself. Smile

It's not childish. It's awesome Smile Many people seem to think that she's in Hello! Project just because she has a "genki" music style. But in fact, she's just a really unique artist with talent and a large selection of music genres. If people don't stand her happy songs, they can listen to her sweet voice on Daisuki da yo, Kingyo Hanabi and Neko ni fuusen instead. Many people say that her voice sucks... it's just different from other voices.

Ai's music may come across as a bit "childish-cutsy" like. But that didn't stop me from liking her and her music. To each his or her own, that is my saying, if they want to like this music or that music, that is there choice and that is fine. I just happen to like Ai and Ayu's music. But i also like trance, jpop, top40 american music, and grunge music and other music like Linkin Park, so i have a big variety of music that i like. I think Ai's music and her PV's are colorful and full of energy, if that is what comes across as being spunky, energetic and what they call "childish" that is ok with me. I think Ai's is the best to come out in a long time.

I believe the reason that I enjoy Ai's music is because of this 'childish' nature. It's cute and fun, but I can understand how some people wouldn't like it though, my friend's ex-gf didn't like her, but she was a jrocker so /shrug.

This kind of music (well her more cutesey stuff), along with the likes of Hello Project and others, well, it's bubblegum pop. Not everyone can take it, but I find that those who can, generally have a lot more fun than the ones who don't. Tongue

Its not childish. She has just special, happy way how to show her feelings and ideas.. I think her music is right from her, she hasn't that cool image.

For me, childish songs are the ones with lyrics like "i love you i need you i want you".. so for example Backstreet Boys. This is childish music in my opinion.

I call her music "kawaii rock" lol. I think she's hyper, but not childish. I agree with Lumix, that is childish music to me, too. Boy groups such as those are childish, and so are the majority of their followers.

Ai's happy/fun style of music is what made me like her in the first place. I wouldn't call her music in general 'childish' some songs might sound childish but I prefer to think of them as fun songs like ponpon.

I think her "hyperactive" songs are childish but those are the songs that don't get on my playlist. Actually, I mostly listen to J-rock and Ai is the only J-pop artist in my music library. I began listening to her music for the slower songs in order to take a break from fast paced rock I usually listen to.
