Last December, I bought Sony NW-A607. I was going to buy iPod Nano, but my sister told me about how hers broke so easily in a few months, so I decided on Sony because it is my favorite electronic brand. They have 512 mb, 1 gb, and 2 gb model. I do not know if 1 and 2 gb model are out in America yet. But, mines has 50 hour battery life, so I know the chance of running out of batteries is very small. It has this new quick charge feature where it only takes about an hour to charge the whole thing, compared to other mp3 players that take several hours, this one for me is very quick and easy to charge. It is supposed to be able to do and hour a minute for charge. The design is also very pretty; to me, I like how it looks more than any other player. The design is very easy to use, and it comes with FM radio, which means that you don't have to buy attachment or anything to listen to it. It's really durable, too. Specifically, I have 1 gb model. I've dropped it about five times, it still works just like when I bought it. The only con to me is, it doesn't hold enough songs. 1 gb was definitely not enough for me, so I recommend just getting the 2. I do not have any more space left on mines except for 6 mb, so, even if there isn't very much space left on it, it'll still work just like when it came out of the box.

Here is the link to it:

It is the sony japan site so it is in Japanese.

Well, my MP3 finally bit the dust after a good run of five years and now I'm looking for the next big thing to replace it. I'm leaning towards iPod nano right now just because my friends have nothing but high praise for it and it's just a slick and clean design. Two questions really:
#1: If I am going to get an iPod where should I get it? certain store?
#2: Should I get the iPod or is there something better out there?
Thank you in advance! Smile

Definitely Sony! (lol, I just said that above) My sister's ipod broke after about six months, and she likes my Sony better. I have had my Sony for 5 months now, I have dropped seven times, and, all the space is used up, but, it still works just like when I got it. The only upside to Ipod is, it has the click wheel thing, so, when browsing through your playlist, it is very easy to go threw a long list, but for Sony, the list doesn't go through as fast (and for me sometimes it gets troublesome because I have a long list of artists).

To tell the truth..i am pretty dissappointed now that i have my sony 20GB HDD NW-HD5 player which i purchased in September last year. Sony is a household name for our family and so from the beginning i had leaned towards it. Now being a person who's majority of music is in chinese, my player cannot read the chinese and therefore i am unable to transfer the song titles in chinese. Which really gets me angry sometimes because i don't like siting here having to rename all my songs to english where half of the song titles that other people rename are too literal. I'm not sure if the flash walkmans or new 6GB HHD walkmans can facilitate other languages. However IF you do want your player to have the language encoder in it or if you are unsure if the other Sony players have the encoder, (which is a big possibility that it won't) then do not purchase the Sony. Your $400 is would be better spent with a product your are satisfied with.
Another thing with the Sony's is that you must install SonicStage, a program like itunes to ipod to transfer your music. I like the click-anddrag stuff..so i found this is to be another con. The program also does not allow you to transfer your files back onto the computer if the file does not exist on the computer..and that really sucks..nor are you able to transfer files and use it like a usb to tranfer files...So if none of the three suit you..save your money..the Sony is not for you

On the good side though, the sound quality is fantastic, it's easy to use and it's quite sensiive, like volume adjustments and rotation of the player when you switch it on, and the Shock protector also works wonders to provide impact protection. it also does not break easily, i've accidently banged it a couple of times and everything is still good to go =] the Sony has a long life and is rechargable trough the usb port on you comp. right now it sounds like there are more pros then cons, but what i was looking for in the player, has failed me..except the long life =]
Now my brothers got an ipod which is big and chunky and the screen on the nano can easily crack and there are definatly no discounts on the ipods. So my suggestion to all mp3 buyers is the iriver. The 20GB one has colour, has lang encoder..it's great. I would've definatly gone for that one. Unless you live in an asian country and just looking for something to store your songs and not care about the brand. Then don' t bother and buy one which conveniently suits you. If you do not need a lang encoder becuase your music is in eng..and want a long-lasting great sound quality and easy to use player. go for the Sony. I just had the language problem.
[oh..you can also set the player to jap..but my japs songs are named in eng..] Smile

Wow, thanks for all the information tsumetai.ame and short+simple! Before this thread I was set on a new ipod nano but now it looks like a have a more troublesome decision ahead of me.

I've thought about this too but all my friends have cases that prevent this. One friend bought his from the get go so the screen weren't scratch resistant but his is still in good shape because he order a case with it. Thanks again guys for the information and if anyone else has any opinions on the above products or an entirely new item, please, share the knowledge.

About the names being unable to show up, all my music is either JRock or JPop, so, all my names show up. Because when I got mines the model was not yet out in a America, I bought it in Asia, so the names show up perfectly for me. The only downside is, buying it in Asia means the manual isn't in English.... and my Chinese pretty much sucks on stuff like that, and my Japanese isn't good on stuff like that either...

I don't have much suggestion for mp3 players because... I don't use them. I'm obsessed with Sony Ericsson's WALKMAN phones series. I don't see the point of having a separate mp3 player anymore, so just no. Tongue

But I advise againest getting an ipod... Everyone and their mother's poodle has one. I guess I"m just sick of it. x___x; Sure it's not bad in specs but there are better things out there, and surely more original, fun, things.

I have an iPod 30GB Video and I'm pretty satisfied with its feature and durability so far. I used to be an iPod hater just like caffeinated because it's just way too popular, but then having one myself doesn't really feel that bad afterall. I haven't tried out other mp3 player so I can't say much, but what I can tell you is I didn't regret getting this iPod video. Nod I do have a case to protect it from scratching, and mine is black and I think it looks cooler than the white one. Tongue

Sony has became a notorious brand due to its rootkit issue, you might want to read this up if you care about your privacy and the goodwill of a company. I don't trust Sony that much now and I think using their stupid SonicStage software is a pain and a hassle.

Do take into consideration if you are going to purchase music online when getting an mp3 player. iPod only works with iTunes music store so if you have an iPod, you have to buy music from them, so it's like monopoly power. If you have other type of mp3 player, you can subscribe to Napster or buy from any online music store that you like. So, getting yourself and iPod limit your choices for online music purchasing.

Other company that has famous mp3 player including Creative with their Zen series, and probably iRiver that has huge market share in Asia. iRiver clix seems like a really awesome media player, you might want to look into that. Wink

Lastly, here's a list of "iPod killer" that might interest you. Nod Good luck on your searching!

Now that I have seen Ayu's new Panasonic commercial, I would want to buy the new D-snap Audio. Does anyone here know a good, cheap, reliable online-store to buy one. I'm now talking about D-snap Audio SV-SD370V/SD310. I know it's stupid to buy that kind of product just because of a CM, but I want it for other things too:

1. It looks nice Love
2. There's the SD-card thing
3 .Ayu commerciales it
4. I'm afraid to take my iPod anywhere, cause it cost so much.

There are other things too. So does anyone here know a place to buy one? Maybe YesAsia will have it in their item-list soon. I have 180 so I should have money for one easily. So if YesAsia will have it soon, how many people here think that it's reliable to buy that kind of a product from there? Thanks.

It's quite a nice player Nod Although you're much better off with waiting for the release of the product in your country than buy over yesasia

That's the thing. It's not going to come to my country. I'm in Finland for god's sake. Anything cool doesn't come here. Althought our stores sell Panasonic products and SD-cards... Wonder will it come? I should go and investigate the stores all over Finland XD And yes, it is much better to buy it from a store that can replace the product if something is wrong with it. I have a thingy to transfer the songs to the SD-card but now I'm missing the player and SD-card...

Wow, Finland!! That seems so far from where I am and so cool sounding to live in. I would trust Amazon Japan, but you have to use Crescent Shop which isn't very cheap. I was going to buy a cellphone on there, but in the end I decided not to, so I don't quite know. But if you check Amazon Japan, It seems very reliable because the people in Japan give very specific details about it and if they have a scratch on it, they will be sure to tell you. The only downside is, the site's in Japanese so you have to be able to either read it yourself or have someone help you.

That's a problem too. I can't speak Japanese, and my computer doesn't even show the characters. I can only read 1 kanji, and few katakana and hiragana characters. But now I have checked online stores in Finland. They have SD-cards. But no D-snap. Only LUMIX Blank stare But I saw in one site, that a Finnish magazine had reviews a D-snap last year. So there should be some Panasonic D-snaps in here.

But the weirdest thing is, I checked Panasonic's official Finnish site, and not a single word about D-snap. That sounds bad. Sad I hope that I would find that kind of pinku D-snap Audio in some Finnish store (like Prisma, Gigantti, Anttila, City Market).....

I really like the idea of having a phone as a phone and an mp3 player as an mp3 player; when they start combining things doesn't the quality of one of the devices suffer? I mean how's the quality and memory on those walkman phones? I'd be pretty impressed if it's on par with this league of mp3 players.

Anyways, thanks for all of the information on my mp3 player situation. I've done a lot of looking around and considering everything (money, availability, style) I think I'm still leaning towards the iPod. It is ridiculously mainstream but I think the originalty of an mp3 player comes from what's on it as opposed to how many people have it. Althought iRiver has been good to me up until this point. The mp3 player that I'm actually replacing is an iRiver that served me well; the drop that did it in was a drop out of my pocket while biking on the highway which would do almost any electronic device in. The iRiver clix caught my attention so I'm going to look into that one a bit more too. Thanks eyn, caffeinated, tsumetai.ame, and short+simple. Althought my decision is the same I feel it's more founded and you guys go to my sister because she's getting a Sony now. Laughing

Errr not at all. The sound quality of Sony Ericsson Walkman phones are amazing. The newer ones have 4gb internal memory, plus you can use memory cards to expand it (they are available in 64mb, 128mb, 512mb, 1gb, 2gb, 4gb). If you really need LOTS of space, you can carry spare memory cards I guess? They are tiny. And also, there is an adaptor that comes with your phone that has a mic and the button to pick up calls, so you can use any headphones with your cellphone, and still can talk on the phone etc. The setup/programs of these walkman phones are very very convenient~

I'm not the type to carry my entire library with me, therefore I'm totally fine with the 512mb memory card that came with my w800. Meow

I think the only glitch with these phones are that they can be expensive (if you want to get the lasest one).
