I'm currently reading Kafka on the Shore by Murakami Haruki (a translation, tho...).
I went to the nearest Borders bookstore today because I was looking for a SAT Exam practice book (yeah I know, I'm studying 2-3 years ahead of time, but I totally just skipped ACT practice). I had a $40 budget and I found this really thorough book that included a CD-rom for about $35. I had the time, so I was looking around the bookstore, and I actually stumbled upon Murakami Haruki's novels. Boogie

Kafka on the Shore was $14.95 and I really wanted to read it so.....
Surprised I replaced my SAT Exam book with a cheaper one. I have no regrets though, it's actually more useful than the other one. Then of course I came home with my own copy of a translated Kafka on the Shore! I haven't started reading it yet since I'm a bit busy with studying, but I will definitely get to it when I can! I kind of want to read the original version though, but this will do! ^_^
Of course I will take my SAT studying seriously this time, unlike what I did for ACT...Embarassed

I don't think I saw South of the Border, West of the Sun at Borders. Hmm....

If your looking for a good science fiction/fantasy book, try Christopher Pike - The last Vampire. About a 5000 year old female vampire and though it sounds cliche, it has been one of my favourite favourite childhood books since like 4ever.

Oooh! I *loved* Christopher Pike when I was younger, and devoured quite a few of his books.
(I think I was about 9 or 10... gee, I haven't thought about those books for so long... now I really feel old... Wink)
My favorites included:
The Last Vampire series
Remember Me trilogy
Last Act
Bury Me Deep [first one I read of his Love ]

They're a lot of fun and pretty quick reads. Good for summer! Giggle

I finished Kafka on the Shore a while ago, but am still not quite sure what I think/thought about it... Confused Embarassed
I definitely enjoyed the act of reading it, but now that I'm done, I haven't decided how I feel about the book as a whole. [Does that make *any* sense at all?]
I promise when I've figured it out, I'll post my feelings here, but until then, perhaps I'll continue to let Kafka ruminate in the back of my mind and meanwhile go dig out some childhood reading material... Giggle

What a coincidence, I finished Kafka on the Shore several hours ago! Giggle
I sacrificed 6 hours of my sleeping time last night to finish the rest of the book, and I was very impressed by the complexity of this novel. I haven't come across such abstract literature until now.
I absolutely love mind-bending concepts! Love

I had my share of emotions while reading this book, and I was particularly surprised by the fact that I actually laughed out loud during some of the more "comical" moments including Hoshino and Nakata. Laughing
This was the first time in my life that I actually laughed from reading a book, so I admire the sense of humor! Giggle

I was *very* surprised to see how much I relate to the concepts mentioned in this story. It matches my own way of thinking, but is presented in such a creative manner. I suppose that's why everything in Kafka on the Shore made sense to me.....
I might share some more opinions I have about this novel in the future. Love

The Last Vampire series were my definite favourite. I 've never tried Kafka, but will try it next time i visit chapters. Anyone try the sun elf series by Richard Baker? The first book is called The Forsaken House if anyone is interested in adventure/fantasy/war. Totally different from Christopher Pike.

I just finished reading "Tuesdays with Morrie" for my schools summer reading.

The story reminded me alot of the j-drama "1 liter of tears" but the Mitch Albom's writing style is so childish...The story would've been alot more touching for me if it was written better. Crying

Has anyone else read this? I feel so weird for being dissappointed with this book...

i really like "Tuesdays with Morrie". very interesting ideas with lots of insights. its one of my favorite.

I also read "Kafka on the Shore" i think its a great book. im addicted to it for a while but towards the end it kinda get boring. i didnt finish the last 2 chapters of the book. gets kinda confusing. but again maybe its becaz my poor english that i didnt understand it well enuff.

right now im not reading any novel. i tend to read more on self development book, i think its more interesting than reading novel. i just finish reading "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" by Stephen LaBerge. ITS REALLY COOL AND FUN. this book teaches u how to hav lucid dream, u can dream to meet and talk with Ai-Chin too Giggle . i really recommend u to read and learn lucid dreaming.

as for a novel, i recommend u to read "the little prince". simply the best novel. but i assume that most of you probably have read it before.

Just read Keane: the autobiography. Gripping, inspiring and moving from my point of view. His particular stance and his reply to McCarthy just shows that we've got to stand up to what's right and at the end of the day, all we've got left to answer to is ourselves and no one, I mean, no one else.

I just started reading....
The Journey to the Centre of the Earth
by Jules Verne

Its amazing... I can't put it down... the first person narrative style is very interesting. Its quite similar to how I write... so... am loving it...
The story is also progressing quite interestingly... its about... as the title suggests... Journey to the centre of the Earth.

Currently reading Cold Shoulder by Lynda LaPlante. It sounds a rather disturbing but interesting mystery thriller. I cannot seem to put it down.

It's a little old but the Dune series remains one of my all time favourites. There are 6 books in all , and the story spans 10,000 years (First 3 books, then 4th book occurring 5000 years later and 5th and 6th occurring 10,000 years later if I'm right) on a desert planet, Dune. It really makes me think about the future of the human species and the possibility of the end of evolution leading to stagnation. And how difficult choices have to be made, but that our final destiny lies in our own hands. My favourite book would be the 4th one; it has the least action but trying to understand Leto's world sets it apart from the rest. A good entry book would of course be Dune (book 1) but it can also be interesting to start with book 5, 6 then the rest (which is what I did), but I don't recommend the latter (I already knew the general storyline).

The original Dune movie (1985?) was directed by David Lynch I think, and was the movie directly before Blue Velvet, which was seminal at the time.

I've actually almost finished this one. It's about seven Australian teenagers who go on a camping vacation for a week only to return and find that their town and country has been invaded. It's a great, great read!

I'll vouch for that one.
it's a series, though, i started them in middle school, and have since gone to a high school that doesn't have them in the library. Crying
i've read 2 of them.
also, if you like this one, you'll probably also like margaret peterson haddix books.
like, the shadow children series, or the one im reading now is called double identity
my gosh, it's really good! Giggle
its about bethany, who, when nearing her 13th birthday is abandoned by her parents at her aunt's (whom she's never met) home. she's trying to figure out what is going on. why was she abandoned? who's elizabeth? what have her parents been hiding from her all these years?
well, it's a suspense story, basically. Nod
it's really good. i highly recommend it. but thats just me! Giggle
