^ Personally, I think the jazz version of Kuroge Wagyuu Joshio Tanyaki 680 Yen was one of her worst songs, as well as it being one of the most terrible jazz songs I've ever heard. I think she should stick to what she does best...ballads and her other trademark random songs (you know what I mean)

well, when an artist tries a new style, there are always going to be mixed and polarized opinions. Tongue
i just like how the band got a little more prominence and that ai tried something different besides the cute, hyper or lovey, ballady sound.
i'm still a big fan of her cute, hyper, lovey, ballady songs, of course Love

I'm really used to Ai's voice. In the beginning I thought her voice was just AWFUL. Like, I heard 'pretty voice' and thought my eardrums were just gonna go PEEEEEWWWW!!! EXPLOSIONS AND INTERNAL BLEEDING!!. ... .... Giggle

but I like her voice now. Actually I find she has a few different voices. There's 'happy and high' > Sakuranbo, Happy Days; 'happy and controlled' > Rocket Sneaker; 'sad and full' > Cherish, Planetarium; 'sexy' > HEART; 'sad yet high' > Daisuki da yo.

having Planetarium as my first Otsuka Ai's song (and liking it a lot), i'm kinda put off a little when my friend sent me Sakuranbo and Happy Days. (omg, what have i put myself into??? and to think i'm a guy!)

but it's when i listen more of her other songs, know more of her lyrics + personality, it's then i really appreciate the kind of songs she sings. be it being super sweet, or just plain tired of daily grinds. she kinda puts her emotions to her songs, and that's what i like from singers (my other fav band is My Chemical Romance, go figure!)

yepz. Ai's good~

I have only watched very little live performances of Ai-chan from the early years to now. I reckon she has improved and she knows how to sing songs with the right expression. She can be a bit squeaky but I reckon that's the unique touch of her voice. But she really does give it her all when she's on live. Nod

@cabal: MCR!!! Boogie

my friends can't really accept her voice, saying it sounds like helium voice. (the high pitch voice when you take in some helium gas..)

But well, i think her songs are good, her lyrics are feelful and her voice is unique.
Plus she's really talented.

I've recently read about Ai accidentally in a blog. 2 guys discussed and agreed that Ai Otsuka is one of the best live performers in Japanese music business. Anyway they also expressed that they didn't like her 'childish' songs much.

Me myself think that Ai has improved her skill in singing a lot, and continues to develop herself more and more. Just listen to 'Shachihata' in the new album LOVE LETTER. I wouldn't have known that it was Ai's voice! No matter how her sales have decreased lately, the fact is that she become better and better in quality. Maybe that doesn't suit the mass market and that's why her sales grew lower. But who cares! I firmly believe Ai is growing mature, better and will continue her career in music business longer than those without talent who might be soooooooo popular, but for just a short time.

I've personally never found her voice to sound squeaky, just a little high pitched. I also think she can sing some beautiful ballads.

I know a lot of people have commented that her voice is too squeaky and that her songs are too childish and cute, but I've never really noticed it, or maybe if I did, it didn't really matter to me. I think her voice is really strong, powerful and versatile, and you can see how much she has matured since her Momo no Hanabira days. Also, as people above have mentioned, she is a great live performer. Besides, I don't mind her high pitched 'cutesy songs at all. I find them to be very sweet, and they certainly keep me in a happy and joyful mood ^_^

I first hear Ai sing only a couple of months ago, and am still in the WTF! phase of appreciating her voice.

Ai is unique, lots of people already pointed that out and expressed opinion on which 'part' of Ai's singing voice they like or dislike. There are ai-vocal styles i really enjoy; Kingyo Hanabi and Planetarium for example, and styles that i just appreciate for the quality; Happy Days and Smily are not my preferred vocal styles, but then answer this - is there anyone doing those kinda styles better than Ai? Most people on here will have heard more J music than I, so if there is an artist out there with Ai's range of skill please tell me who it is because I have never heard them. The usual Ayu, koda kumi etc just don't cut it if we are talking vocalists with true range - nobody in western music has the full range either, only amy winehouse would come close due to the power of her vocal.

I have been around for (it seems) hundreds of years and have heard a lot of female vocalists live and on recording. Nothing like this though. There are female vocalists who excel more in their own style, without a doubt the most accomplished female vocalist of today is Netrebko - the classical music world will still be studying Netrebko in 50 years time.

Anna Netrebko - O Mia Babbino Caro

If you clicked the link, welcome back, bet that woke you up, if you didn't - cool also, means you are taking my word for what i say, always a good thing - as i said i have been around a while and heard lots of music - everyone's opinion counts of course, but mine counts just that little bit more!

Another wonderful voice belongs to the young New Zealand soprano Hayley Westenra - gentle yet very expressive.

Westenra - May It Be

Westenra - Across The Universe of Time

The version of Lord of The Rings, 'May it Be' is exceptional. I also have a vid of 'Universe of Time' cut to the animated film Spirited Away which is beautiful, will upload at some point if i get the go-ahead from a mod or admin as is not strictly ai-related.

If you have stuck with this post you will have an idea of the calibre of vocalist i am placing Ai alongside. I am not saying she is more powerful than Netrebko or more expressive than Westenra, they are masters of that particular art and no-one else comes close. But am beginning to think she ranks alongside them due to the immense range of her vocal. As in all these things I usually take a couple of years to fully make up my mind, I know i am still in the honeymoon phase having only recently heard Ai, but the last time i remember being this thrilled by a vocalist was a long long time ago when i first heard Justine Washington. But that is a subject for another post.

hi there calis.

i suppose im still not exposed widely enough to the world of music. listening to those you've referred is rather humbling to me. Embarassed i thank you for that.

anyway, to compare Ai to them, it's pretty "WOW!" to me. it's a little, erm, overwhelming. no? (i dunno, me thinks ai kinda not in their league. not that i'm not listening to ai 24/7 though.)
