storm child, do u take sketching classes b4? awesome, really awesome.
You do have the techniques but the drawing still deviate from the real Ai. i do draw a lot too but my drawings are drew in ink... i draw since i hold a pencil, drawing is good...

Thanks. Smile

Nope, I haven't taken any classes. I prefer to practise and learn on my own, although I sometimes look for tips and tutorials on the Internet.

I don't draw very often. I think it would help me out a lot if I did a quick sketch a few times a week, and not always try to make them perfect, but I am a perfectionist, and I find it hard to do something just for practise. It's a part of myself that I have to keep working on, because being a perfectionist isn't always a good thing. As it stands, I only do a few drawings a year.

Before I got back into pencil drawing, I did a lot of digital illustrations with Adobe Illustrator. That's where I learned to pay attention to the details of an image, and see the shapes that are really there -- instead of seeing a head and a face, with specific features like the nose, mouth, and eyes, you look for the shapes of the shadow and highlight areas, and draw what you actually see. This way, you can get something tricky like a nose to look right, by just drawing the shadows you see, instead of a "nose".

I still do digital illustrations as well, but not very many these days, because now I do so much detail that it takes a long time. This recent one of Miki Fujimoto took me about 30 hours...

Those are great illustrations, stormchild! Love I especially like your Miki illustration. That's vector, right? I've tried some things in a vector programme (Corel) but I lack the patience to get it right. Sad

Thanks. Yes, it's vector. It's pretty frustrating at first, trying to learn how to draw and work with vector paths. It really made no sense to me at all for the first while. Even after I got the hang of that, it still took a long time to understand everything that's going on in Adobe Illustrator; it has a fairly steep learning curve.

Here's another one. This one's Scarlett Johansson.

Brilliant! I love all of your artwork!

You used my absolute favorite part of the Planaterium PV for the Ai drawing, too. I absolutely love it! Love

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like the drawing and my other artwork.

I have a couple other ideas for Ai drawings, so I'm sure I'll do another one sooner or later. Maybe next time I will try to do one in color; I have a couple boxes of really nice pencil crayons, but I have never tried to do realistic drawing with those, so I might have to practise for awhile first!

Digital illustrations are done entirely on the computer. For mine, I use Adobe Illustrator. The reference photo goes on a locked layer, and the illustration is drawn overtop of that, so it's easy to get all the lines and shapes in exactly the right place (as long as the photo has enough detail). The challenges lie in how to realistically represent things like hair, or areas with soft lines and shadows.

I've got quite a few of them posted on the Art page on my site, which lists the tools I used for each piece. The illustrations at the top of the page were all done in Adobe Illustrator.

...So anyway, today I made my first attempt to draw something realistic in color, with pencil crayons. It turned out alright, so I think my next Ai-chan drawing is going to be in color. Here's what I did today (this isn't Ai's eye -- it's Hitomi Yoshizawa's):
