Hey everyone. I've just finished a new pencil drawing of Aichan that I've been working on over the past few days. It's a scene from the Planetarium PV (shortly after the big firework).

| It would be perfect if the eyes is a little smaller. Nice job though. |

Gorgeous drawing, nice work, Stormchild! I love the eyes in your drawing, everything looks great, but if you want some critiques, i do have some.
I think you forgot to draw out her eye bags, which makes her eye looks flatter than it should be. The face is also a little rounder than the original picture, especially the cheek on the left hand side. The hair is shorter than the original but that's a minor problem.
Anyway, I can't draw that well myself so I shouldn't talk too much. Great job on that and I'm looking forward for more when you have time for them. |

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Glad you like it.
By the way, here's the photo reference I used.

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback on the details. Yes, you're right. One of the main problems is that pencil drawings do not scan well. A lot of details were lost (and some got overemphasized) when I scanned the drawing. The real one does have the lines under the eyes, and some of her hair extends further down (but fades into the background). If you look closely you can sort of see where it was (especially on the left side). Even so, some of the hair in the real drawing should have been longer.
And one thing I couldn't manage to capture is the fact that some of her hair is flying forward toward the camera. That would have been really cool, but my drawing skills are not quite that good yet. It would need to get blurry as it gets closer to the "camera"...I'm not sure how to do that.
I'll probably do another one sometime (although maybe next time I'll do a vector one, or some other style). I have a few screenshots from Kingyo Hanabi and Neko Ni Fuusen that I thought would work well too. |

wooow you are much better than I am when it comes to realisme. It looks like Ai-chan although you should distance the eyes a bit and make them A TINY bit smaller.
overall a very good job ^^ |

| Beautiful piece Stormchild! No major crits here, but something about her eyes seems off to me, but still great nonetheless. Bravo! |

Thank you, everyone, for all the nice comments. I really appreciate the feedback, especially from people who are big fans of Aichan.
A number of people mentioned the eyes look funny; I think they are a little bit too close together, and perhaps a little bit bigger than they should be.
Actually, this was only the second portrait I've done in pencil so far. My first one was a little under a year ago, a drawing of Misaki Ito. (I thought it was pretty good at the time, but now when I look at it, it seems very weird looking. Her skin is pale white and there's a lot of shading missing on her face.)
I lost track of time while working on this one, but I think I spent somewhere around 12-15 hours. There are people who could draw something like this in just a couple hours, but I'm nowhere near that fast!
If you're wondering how it's done, I use a few different regular pencils (HB, 2H, B, and 6B), but most of it was done with a mechanical pencil (0.5mm HB). I used the edge of an eraser to "draw" the highlights in Aichan's hair (with quick strokes).
An essential tool I use is a tortillon -- a piece of paper rolled up so that it has a point, which is used for blending and smoothing. It's also great for "painting" soft shadows. You can "pick up" some graphite with the tortillon and then paint soft things like subtle face shading, like dimples, the divot under the nose, etc. I also use that technique to paint the actual lips after erasing the initial outline.
(Don't bother buying a tortillon; you can easily make your own.) |

You drew the great piece in just 12-15 hours.
It's very quick!
If you have free time, I really hope to see more.
The photo reference you used is the scene I love most in the Planetarium PV.
BTW
This is a good chance to post your first drawing elsewhere.
After all, the Densha Otoko fever is still.
Let more people admire your masterpiece.
Go~ ^_^ |
