L’Arc~en~Ciel (French for Rainbow) is very different than the everyday rock bands you hear today. There is something about them that sets them apart. They, along with the band GLAY, are the last of what some people refer to as the “Early 90’s Greats”. The band currently consists of hyde on vocals, ken on guitar, tetsu on bass, and yukihiro on drums. Yes, all their names are lowercase.
L’Arc~en~Ciel (Laruku for short) have been around a long time, 12 years on a major label (since 1994), and almost sixteen if their indie days are included. Since the beginning they were different from most bands, dressing with a Mediterranean gypsy fashion rather than the black and gloomy clothes that was so prevalent in the indie rock scene at the time. They don’t like to play by the rules; they like to make them up. L’Arc~en~Ciel is one of those bands that go beyond a rigid genre of rock, just as their name suggests, they explore every color of the rainbow, from punk to metal to pop. They can be dark and haunting at times (finale), light and fun (Driver’s High), or slow and beautiful (Pieces). This may be cause for their large fan base in and outside of Japan: the visual rocker and the pop listener will both find something they enjoy. Their music transcends the language barrier. And there is no doubt that L’Arc~en~Ciel has left a big mark on, not only the Japanese music scene, but also Japanese culture, from video games to manga to fashion.
The band was formed in 1991 by tetsu, or rather the band’s concept. He only had a guitarist, Hiro, at the time, and he had all intentions of becoming the vocalist. During this time, hyde and Pero were having trouble with their band “Jersalems Rod” and tetsu decided to recruit them after hearing hyde’s voice. hyde was reluctant at first to become the vocalist and wanted to be the guitarist because he thought girls liked guitars better. After pushing by tetsu, he agreed and tetsu finally had his band, naming it “L’Arc~en~Ciel” after a French movie he just watched with the same name. They held various lives during that year in Osaka and became very popular in the indies scene. In 1992, Hiro left the band, and tetsu called up ken. ken and tetsu had formed a band in high school, but ken went on to architectural studies after graduation. Again, tetsu pushed ken to join, and after much persuasion ken quit school to join the band. Supposedly, he left without the blessings of his parents and haven’t talked to them since. With ken in the band, they recorded a song for the omnibus album “Gimmick”, and soon after released their first single “Floods of tears” with a limited pressing of 1000.
Later that year, Pero decided to leave the band, supposedly to follow Hiro, and tetsu was in search of another member again. He had seen a drummer, sakura, in many lives and called him up to offer him a job. sakura was not an official member of any band and just played with whoever needed him. Being from Tokyo, he never heard of L’Arc~en~Ciel, but decided to check them out. He traveled to Osaka to hear them play and decided that this was the band for him. In 1993, “DUNE” was released through special mail-order and was printed in limited copies. The mail-order only version had only nine tracks and special packaging. Then, later in the year, a regular version of “DUNE” was released and contained ten songs. It hit #1 on the Oricon Indies Charts. The band was being recruited by many major labels, but they continued to travel from Osaka to perform lives in Tokyo. Later that year, they all moved to Tokyo and signed under the Ki/oon Records division of SONY MUSIC. A video single “nemuri ni yosete” was released, followed by their major debut as “Tierra”, arguably considered their most consistent and focused album. The song “Blurry Eyes” was being used for the anime DNA^2 and therefore was released after “Tierra” and is often considered their debut single. In 1995 the band released one single, “Vivid Colors” and the album “heavenly” based on a lighter European rock sound.
In 1996, their first million seller, “True” was released, and the band had reached the level of popularity that they always dreamed of. A good deal of their songs were used for TV, their faces covered magazines and billboards, and they became regular guests on music programs. This all came to an end in 1997 when sakura was arrested for heroin possession. tetsu was extremely upset at this incident and never seemed to get over it, most likely never being able to forgive sakura for almost destroying his band. hyde was very close to sakura and suffered a depression. Many fans agree that the whole event was blown out of proportion: their theme songs were replaced, their CDs pulled off shelves, and their images no where to be found. The release of the single “the Fourth Avenue Cafe” was cancelled. The band seemed to disappear overnight. The rest of the band was put under house arrest by their record company after undergoing a drug test themselves. This was the lowest point of the band’s career, but helped to shape their future direction.
After sakura left the band, the rest of L’Arc~en~Ciel decided to keep on going. They created a “L’Arc~en~Ciel cover band” called “the Zombies” and played in small venues. They then travelled to Europe to film the video to their comeback single “niji“, hiring yukihiro as a temporary replacement of sakura. In February 1998, tetsu announced yukihiro as permanent drummer to the band, and their next album “HEART” was later released, which included their first #1 single “winter fall“. L’Arc~en~Ciel was not forgotten by their fans. “HEART” was followed by the double release of “ark” and “ray” which peaked at #1 and #2 respectively and which gained them a plethora of music awards. In 2001, they released “REAL” and announced that they were going to take a break as a band. The members each pursued their own solo projects, and fear of a break-up arose.
In 2003 the band went on a seven day tour saying that there would be a very important announcement at the end of the tour. While some suspected an announcement of break-up, fans’ fears were eased with an announcement of instead a new album! “SMILE” was released in March of 2004 and was also released in the United States under TOFU Records, a division of SONY created in 2002 to promote JPop in the US. They also surprised US fans with their first American concert at Otakon, an anime convention. 12,000 fans attended the event and it became the largest performance by a Japanese artist in American history.
Their most recent release is the album “AWAKE” which, for the first time, contains 12 full length songs. It will be released in the US in September. All of their recent singles from “jiyuu e no shoutai” have had appearences from their second alter ego band “P’UNK~EN~CIEL”, which consists of TETSU P’UNK on vocals and guitar, HYDE P’UNK on guitar, YUKI P’UNK on bass, and KEN P’UNK on drums. P’UNK~EN~CIEL does punk covers of L’Arc~en~Ciel songs. Their latest single is the summer song “Link” which is being used as the opening theme song for the Full Metal Alchemist Movie.

I’m from the Philippines and we really SHOULD spread the Laruku love! Ohohohoho (maybe do a petition for Laruku to come to the Philippines as well? Who knows? It’s easier for them to come here since if you consider the mileage and fare, they’ll only spend Php50k each on first-class JAL flights, hehehe I should know since I do the same…)
BTW ever heard of the Laruku event last year at UP Diliman? I was there. It was organised by Juujiro, a (I think) laruku fans uhhh… Club? in our country. hehehe. I’m hoping there’ll be an event again this year. *le sigh*

Seventh Heaven is out now and it was number 1 on the oricon charts. Their new single My Heart Draws A Dream was used for the new Subaru commercial. Their tour is coming up too, way to go Laruku!
Here’s the link to the latest Seventh Heaven Performance on Music Station…the guys look a bit more energized here than their last Music Station appearance. I guess they’re psyched about their upcoming tour.

Has anyone heard Laruku’s new song “my heart draws a dream”. gd song.
I found a site that goes into detail about Hyde’s life from his child hood, to now.
I believe the site is called Haido segai
oh guys, that’s mr.donut, hehe! I didn’t know he worked at a music store, but i’m sure tetchan did, he mentioned it in his book. anyway, i’m watching the pusuma episode again with haido and ken-chan…never fails to crack me up…wahaha! haido’s such a talented artist.
really?did he teach private lessons in music store?(his father had a music store)i know mr. donout ,he tried to draw for every elders so that easy to remember them.i know and then ,he worked on a billiards shop, and then, worked on a make strap’s shop.due to he studied the design,so the boss let he to do designer,at that time, laruku’s posters all make from hyde!because there is a printer behind his,so that time the first cd”dume”also from hyde’s hand!
I found this site that talked about HYDE’s life before he was famous. He worked at a place called mr. donout, h=he said quit because a lto of elderly people came by. They always wanted him to remember who they were and wat they ordered last time. Hyde said in the interview, ” How am i supposed to remember wat they ordered, they were all looked the same with white hair. Eventually Hyde worked at a music store, and taught private lessons.
That’s my wish too, eva! I hope they do come here soon! I totally adore Seventh Heaven right now, it all started to sink in…kakkoi!!!

There seem to be a lot of confusion when it comes to the guys’ birth years…from a lot of articles I’ve read tetsu, ken and yukki were all born in ‘68 and haido in ‘69… oh well…
The good news is, Laruku is releasing a new single this spring for the anime “Seiri no Moribito” and it’s called “Shine”. They’ve also got an upcoming tour in Japan which kicks off in June. I am truly hopoing against hope that they do another “Asialive” and come to the Philippines! Wahahahaha!!!
Laruku aishite!
Hello I am From Indonesia My name is Oval I Love Hyde
right, 1969, not 1968.
actually hyde was born in 1969, ken 1968, tetsu 1969
i think p’unk-en-ciel is not neccessarily “punk”, just as d’ark-en-ciel is not …”dark(?)”
hello~ i’m form china shanghai
my name is ONLY~ my chinese name is 姜海霞
my nickname is 夫 sorry… my english is not very good
i love hyde,too
hyde ~ my dear~ ohh~
Leanne,
thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. I needed to hear that. Now I am happy! Thnax for the link. phew, now I can stop worrying. Seriously tho, thanx. But what is Hyde doing now?
Hooray laruku!
Hey, rikuo-san, you’re wrong. ;) They’ve been having these solo projects for awhile. You can check their website, their going to have a 15th year anniversary live soon. There have been some re-issues of singles and soon ark/ray will be re-released as well to celebrate this HUMUNGO event. HYDE’s solo projects for this year is ended. As far as I know, tetsu has abandoned TETSU69 (although, he is/was the member of the band “Creature Creature” as a bassist). ken also has a -new- solo project as Ken, and acid android is being released in America soon. :D
There are several awesome fansites that you can use to keep in touch with the band’s activities. I believe that the best one is “The Ark”. It’ll keep you from worrying too much and believing in such horrible things!! Don’t worry. Laruku lives on!
-Leanne :D
Yeah, that’s true. But I fear they broke up, because they haven’t done anything with each other recently. Hyde is doing a solo project “Hydiest”, Ken is working with Sakura in a band called S.O.A.D(son’s of all pussy), Tetsu is doing Tetsu69, and Yukihiro is doing acid android. They may never come back together. Someone correct me, I hope i’m wrong.
L’Arc~en~Ciel is a great band. It’s amazing how much they went through and they are still together. Great review!
Well, I never heard anything from Sakura, but they have lots of fun with Yukihiro too. You may not see it in the videos, but backstage they do super crazy things. Things that make them laugh alot.
Wow, beautiful article on the best band Jrock has to offer. It’s so amazing how even after everything, they’re still together…i just hope this solo faze they’re going through doesn’t last. Not that i don’t like their solo songs….but L’arc~en~Ciel together is something else.
They were never the same after Sakura left. Although they have a few good songs afterwards, the sound was never full and complete… aka drums. A lot of the songs are just one pattern. I’m very curious on how they would sound now if they still had Sakura. He’s one of the best drummers I know. Larc used to be a fun bad but then it got all serious and none of the members seemed like they were having as much fun as before Sakura left.
When Ken and Sakura hooked up and formed SOAP, it looks like they were having a blast. Ken’s guitar sounded more lively and Sakura’s drums were singing again.. he was limited when he was playing for Zigzo. Cool thing is that Hyde sang at one of the SOAP lives at his hometown… that would have been awesome to hear. 3 of 4 larc members…
wow! a very impressive article… they had a really hard time and they’re still together, i’m really glad for that… laruku is such a great band, luv them…. andddddd thanks for this great article
wow…I never knew that Hyde and Sakura were really close. Great article by the way…I became teary after reading it… they’ve been through so much, but I’m glad that they’re still together until now~ :D
o_o Wah, I knew about sakura, but I had no idea that hyde suffered a depression after he left… Wow, that actually made me cry. Seriously. >>
Yeah… l’arc en ciel were all over the country when they released ark and ray… they were so famous that everytime you attend a discussion about music their names were surely be mentioned
Woo this is the first full length article on L’Arc that I’ve bothered to read; thanks for the great writing~! The arrest on sakura explains the angst heard in hyde’s voice in “Niji,” which is a beautiful song. They’re everywhere: “Ready, Steady, Go!” (Full Metal Alchemist) “Finale” (Ringu 0) and so many other songs that were used as theme songs in the world of entertainment. GO LARUKU!! \m/
OMG, thanks like SOO much for this article!! Cuz like, now I’m hooked to LARUKU!! WOOT!!…and you’re responsible for it. :P
I’m listening to Pisces and Niji while reading your article, it feels great, I really enjoy your way or writing, very detailed and informative.
The sakura event seems deadly serious to me, I mean their songs and albums are like wiped out all of a sudden. I’m surprised they manage to make a comeback later on, tetsu must a be a great leader for the band.
I remember the SMILE album you mentioned above, because they got the 2nd place while Ai Otsuka’s LOVE PUNCH got the 3rd on Oricon chart. First place is Utada Hikaru’s single collection. :(
Thank you for writing this article! I wouldn’t know any of this stuff if you hadn’t written it. I didn’t know anything about their past or much at all about sakura. It’s a very good article!
Wow.. I didn’t know they went through so much. Their history seems so turbulent but they still stood together. I’m quite impressed of that. Most bands I hear of split up at the first sign of conflict. Anyhow thanks for writing such an insighful article.
