1 Litre of Tears
Sometimes I feel like my body doesn't belong to me. What's happening to me?

This dorama is about a girl who was diagnosed with a disease called “Spinocerebellar Degeneration” when she was 15 years old, and was able to continue her life until her death at the age of 25 years old.

The plot is based on the true story of a Japanese girl named Kito Aya, who had the same disease. She kept writing in her diary to remember her experiences until she could no longer hold a pen. Aya simply wished to live until the end of her life, and the purpose of writing in the diary was to remind herself to not give up. She shed tears many times, at the same time encompassed by the rich love and support from her family, friends, and boyfriend. Her diary “1 Litre of Tears” was published after her death, because of its inspiring and courageous message of

“Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing.”

So far, over 18,000,000 copies of her diary have been sold.

The Review

Haruto & Aya
Haruto and Aya

This dorama features Sawajiri Erika, Nishikido Ryou, Narumi Riko, Yakushimaru Hiroko, Jinnai Takanori and Fujiki Naohito. Sawajiri Erika has powerfully brought out the character of Aya, and people who watch this dorama will feel compassion for her while she suffers from the illness. My tears flowed after almost every episode as I questioned myself, “What would I do if I were Aya?” This is a dorama where you can see a 15 year old young girl who was able to face her disease bravely, and tried her best to treasure the time she spent with her friends, family and boyfriend everyday she could.

To me, this was one of the best doramas of 2005, mainly because the reality of this story has enlightened me. I realized that my life is not that tough compared to those who are suffering from an incurable disease. “1 Litre of Tears” stood out for a reason: it is not because Aya was upset because of her disease, she was touched by the love and patience she received from her friends and family. I was amazed by the braveness with which she chose to live her life, as a strong girl who was only 15 years old, yet managed to face her cruel fate with a positive outlook, and tried her best to do whatever she could by herself.

1 Litre of Tears diary
Kito Aya's diary

For those dorama fans who loved “Beautiful Life” that starred Takuya Kimura & Tokiwa Takako, I’d bet you guys will appreciate this story too. I can feel the power of the love from her family and friends in this story, and encouraged me to be positive in my life even though there may be many difficulties and problems. I hope there will be somebody who is willing to translate the original diary by Kito Aya sold in Japan because she has a lot of meaningful words in her diary. This story contains both sadness and love, and I hope you guys will love this dorama as much as I did.

Episode 1 synopsis

This dorama starts right before Aya is confronted with the illness, Spinocerebellar Degeneration, in which the nerve cells of areas necessary for the human body to move and balance–including the cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord–transform and eventually disappear.

Ikeuchi Aya (Sawajiri Erika), a 15 year old girl, is the eldest daughter in a normal Japanese family. She lives with her reliable mother, Shioka, who works as a nutritionist, her father, Mizuo, the wacky owner of a tofu shop, her quiet younger brother, Hiroki, and two younger sisters, the sarcastic Ako and innocent Rika. On the day of her high school entrance exam, she left the house full of energy, but she missed her stop to get off the bus and walk to her high school because she fell asleep. She quickly got off and ran from the bus in the rain when she discovered she was late. She slipped, fell down and injured her knee. At that time, she met Haruto Aso, who was trying to skip the exam. He gave her a ride to school, the administrators allowed them to take the exam (despite the fact that Haruto was uninterested in taking it), which they both later passed.

The new semester began, Aya and Haruto were in the same class, and both were elected as the representative of their class. Aya also joined the basketball team, and was reunited with the boy who she was fond of from the male basketball team. Just as she was beginning to enjoy her high school days, Aya starts to experience some physical difficulties. She always dropped food from her chopsticks, could not estimate the distance of the objects in front of her, could not pour water into a cup without spilling it, and occasionally wobbled while walking. Her mother, Shioka, who was the only one to notice the physical changes in Aya, started to worry about what was going on.

One day, Aya’s life started to change after she tripped and fell. She couldn’t protect herself with her hands while falling and she hurt her face. After this, her illness is slowly revealed and her tragedy begins…

Hai.. since there r still many ppls asking bout Aso Haruto.. i qoute back what GHIS wrote on his post on Nov 28, 2006.

“Yea, Aso Haruto, this Character just fiction.

In Aya’s real diary, she writes about how she wish she could find love. They placed Aso Haruto in the show by the request Aya’s real mother because she wanted Aya’s dream of love to be fulfilled. ”

Its too bad that the character is not real. I really wish that she can have that kind of love in her life.

i just wanted to find somewhere where i can leave a msg. i agree with most the viewers here but also i loved this film because it keeps making me think and i know this may sound sad but i was hooked on to it. i watched the whole 11 episodes frm 3am til about 11am. i cried all the way through. it is so cruel to a person yet Aya stood up for herself. thats all i wanted to say really. i have probably cried one litre of tears cause i used a whole loo roll. i wished haturo kissed aya in the last scene or something, that would of been sweet. i mainly cried because i didn’t believe in hansome young men being so kind. wonder what his name is… newyz seriousli its such a good drama. im frm england and i have never watched things like this before it was so touching and sad. and i do hope they find a curable solution because many many people suffer frm this i.e families and friends as well as the sufferers. simply amazin though.

I cry in every sad event. This movie has changed my life to be more worthy than before. I imagine if I am Aya, I can’t move and do anything, I will stab myself with knife and die. But Aya, She never gave up till the end.. She taught me that life is so precious.

1. “Human soul is precious because it has a limit. Because of that limit, human do the best thing for themselves.”
2. “If There is someone dies,There will be someone else cries”

Yeah, it’s really disapoint everyone, especially for Indonesian who watch 1 litre of tears… It’s really suck! It will bring Indonesia as no.1 with plagiate film in the world. Of course as Indonesian, we don’t want it happen again, since the film that they plagiated based on a true story. Poor Aya-san… Oh yeah, can anyone submit the translation of 1 Litre no Namida’s book? I mean the diary coz I can’t read Japanese really well (even I’ve bought the book from Kinokuniya, hikz… Well, it’s not that worthless).

Hi…. There … I’m from Indonesia.
I really proud of Aya in that series, and especially proud of Kito Aya. She’s really patient, always happy also she’s known she’ll be dead soon. Ooh no… If it happen to me, I do not know, what kind of a react that I will show. I really agree with you all about crying until I shed 1 Litre of Tears like that title itself. By watching Aya’s Series, I realize that we have to say a lot of thanks to God, because how good, how great He is. I learn a lot of things from Aya. I know I have to appreciate this life. And from Aya’s story I’m starting to interest in Health and Medical field. Hehehe. Aya… Arigatou Gozaimasu, from you I know so many things in this world that I don’t know. Fighting!!

btw, when me and my old sister didn’t know about 1 Litre of Tears yet. We thought that Indonesia, espcially Sinemaart as the production house is really great in making a Christmas Drama. Wow… What a surprise, when I know that it just a copy drama from Japan Drama. How come??? oooh I was angry when I know that, I didn’t think that they would copied it. My old sister really likes the story of “Buku Harian Nayla”, but she likes that because at the time, me and also my sister didn’t know it yet. I hope someday one of us can go forward to say Don’t Copy or Imitate the Japan Dorama or Korea or Taiwan ANYMORE!!!

I`m japanease. In Japan, there are three books about Aya.
this is real Aya`s true last letter!!
sorry,my bat english.

A letter in 21 years old of Februa letry, 1984 Aya.
This letter became the last letter which Aya wrote by oneself.
She cannot convey own intention such as writing it after this, talking eternally.

Dear Yoko

I think that you are very strong.
Because, you are cheerful so as to be dazzling.
When meet you, is me who smile carelessly for joy;, by the way, I wrestle with a watercolor now.
A picture is free.
A picture is obedient.

A letter, thank you very much.

I am cheerful.

An answer is late, and I’m sorry.

By the way, I like innocence of Alpine girl Heidi(old anime) very much recently.
(For one’s age….hehe)
I feel like understanding a feeling of Clara of a wheelchair.
Because present I know the place that I cannot go, the place that cannot live.

My lifetime dream gets possible to do anything early alone and is dutiful to my parents, and it is to want to become a good older sister.
Though I am ordinary, it is difficult!
In particular to me of a sluggard.

What are Yoko, your dream?
In addition, please teach it this time.

Then a cold day continues.
Be careful about a cold.
Try an examination of a piano hard.
In addition, I look forward to a correct day.
Good-bye.

Heartily

To favorite Yoko

Hei Diiva! You’re from Indonesia? So, have you heard of a film named “Buku Harian Nayla”? It’s translated as “Nayla’s diary”. It’s the worst film that I’ve ever see, nah, I don’t really watch it because it’s illegally plagiated 1 Litre of Tears. Of course it makes me really mad! How could they plagiated it as they like? Also, the second reason I really mad is the film on air two times! First as a christmas-special TV show, and now it is on air once again (I mean right now)!!! GOSH!!!! I hope someone can stop it, since someone had mentioned it in Wikipedia (see it for a confirmation) and some reports have been sent to Fuji TV. Hope it will works…

To Laura..
i know it’s kinda none of my bizniz…but for ur questions..
um.. i don’t really know where asou kun is ..
but since he showed up in the VERY VERY end when aya was playing basketball.. i think he died..
unless it was like a flashback.
but if it was heaven.. then he probably died. it kinda sucked… (the ending) because they really rushed it and there wasn’t much detail in it..
for the 2nd question i DO think the romance is real because when the REAL aya went through treatments and such,.. she had a boyfriend who cared and loved her like asou did with the other aya.
yeah.. i hope this helps.. forgive me if it doesn’t..

Hi Marvin.
the exact reason for why Aya died was that she was diagnosed with
spinocerebellar degeneration.
it’s a disease where the nerves in your body begin to be unable to function.
So, like aya, the nerves in her legs and entire body began to slowly not work anymore.
she was unable to walk, and then she was in a wheelchair and then she was bed ridden, and then she died.
she couldn’t measure distances anymore, and her speech began to slur until she couldn’t talk at all.
there is still no cure for this disease.
that’s why aya died.

hi..
in regards to the questions asked by “MY review for the show”,
for the 1st question,
it is because it’s more suitable for her education, BUT also it was strenuous for her at her old school.
she needed help walking up and down the stairs, and her ability to walk was getting harder and harder for her.
though she wasn’t with her friends, she still saw them and she met new friends. furthermore… aya needed a place where she could take her time and not rely on her friends.
therefore, aya’s choice to go to the special school helped the others around her, as well as herself. remember the poems she wrote? those also helped the others around her. they also helped her accomplish her dreams of helping others. it started her diaries that were published. i hope that helps..
for the 2nd question,
i too,… was really bummed out when asou-kun’s expression was left out.
i don’t know exactly why this was,… but i want to find out. at the end… it showed aya playing basketball, and asou kun showed up. i’m wondering why that happened. did it show that in the beginning of the show? cuz if not, and if aya was in heaven, then that must have meant that something happened to asou-kun for him to meet her there. maybe he died too.. but that’s just an option. i wasn’t satisfied with the ending at all..
it left the people watching with questions..
so yeah.
the 3rd question,
i have no clue at all..
i guess it was just because the parents went, and the kids were at school or something.
or maybe they were in the huge school crowd that showed up in the very end. you never know, ya know?
also.. i don’t think it was aya’s death anniversary.
maybe the parents were just visiting aya.
or maybe not.
god i haven’t watched it since the summer..
so i need to refresh my memory.
so yeah. forgive me if i am wrong.
for your final question,
she did live her life the fullest.
she lived it the best that she could.
she was bedridden, so she couldn’t walk or get up.
she couldn’t even move her legs.
how could she have done the things that others could do if she couldn’t control her feet and legs?
she lived her life the best she could by writing in her diaries.
she lived her life the best she could by helping others with the same disease as her.
don’t you see that other kids and adults with the same disease as aya probably wouldn’t even think of writing or trying to do the best they can?
even though others would want to live on, aya tried harder and she never gave up until the very last moment.
she stayed happy till the very last moment.
i hope this helps..
i loved this drama the best.
go aya.
she rocks.

It is really a wonderful drama,I think whoever had watched it would be touched and encouraged a lot.
Only I feel a little pity is that the ending of this drama is a bit hurry,it should be more described,it should be told more about Aya’l life and Aso’s feeling.
But all in all,it is a good story…it touches so many people…

MY Review of the show CANADA January 1, 2007 at 6:59 am

“One Litre of Tears” is a really sad, and inspirational film. It teaches you to value life, live everyday to the fullest, and care for the people around you. I really liked this show, but there’s some parts of the show that i don’t get and would like you guys to help me out.

Why did they place Aya in the Special School? I recall it was because it was a place suitable for her studies. But Was there a need for her to study anymore? It’s not like she is going to be able to have an occupation. I felt that by placing her in the Special school was really cruel to her because it isolated her from her families and friends and secondly because it wasted her time. She attended the special school for like 2 years in the show. With these two years she could have spent it with her families.

Second question is about the ending of the show. It was not satisfying to me because i didn’t get to see Asou’s expression when she died, and this was the part that i most wanted to see, lol. The question is why did they omit this part?

Another question is also about the ending. Why didn’t her sister and brother atend her death anniversary?

Last question regards her moral. She say that live your life to the fullest right? How is staying in the hospital for 5 years living a life to the fullest by being in bed ?

Like the title, I shed 1 litre of tears watching it. Aya and her family are inspirational and most courageous.

I hope for a cure for this cruel disease.

I have sent them an announcement, but no response.
Can everyone help me to give them such email or anything?
Poor Aya, they adopt her story and claim it as a fiction!!!
Shame…shame on them.
