1 Litre of Tears
Sometimes I feel like my body doesn't belong to me. What's happening to me?

This dorama is about a girl who was diagnosed with a disease called “Spinocerebellar Degeneration” when she was 15 years old, and was able to continue her life until her death at the age of 25 years old.

The plot is based on the true story of a Japanese girl named Kito Aya, who had the same disease. She kept writing in her diary to remember her experiences until she could no longer hold a pen. Aya simply wished to live until the end of her life, and the purpose of writing in the diary was to remind herself to not give up. She shed tears many times, at the same time encompassed by the rich love and support from her family, friends, and boyfriend. Her diary “1 Litre of Tears” was published after her death, because of its inspiring and courageous message of

“Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing.”

So far, over 18,000,000 copies of her diary have been sold.

The Review

Haruto & Aya
Haruto and Aya

This dorama features Sawajiri Erika, Nishikido Ryou, Narumi Riko, Yakushimaru Hiroko, Jinnai Takanori and Fujiki Naohito. Sawajiri Erika has powerfully brought out the character of Aya, and people who watch this dorama will feel compassion for her while she suffers from the illness. My tears flowed after almost every episode as I questioned myself, “What would I do if I were Aya?” This is a dorama where you can see a 15 year old young girl who was able to face her disease bravely, and tried her best to treasure the time she spent with her friends, family and boyfriend everyday she could.

To me, this was one of the best doramas of 2005, mainly because the reality of this story has enlightened me. I realized that my life is not that tough compared to those who are suffering from an incurable disease. “1 Litre of Tears” stood out for a reason: it is not because Aya was upset because of her disease, she was touched by the love and patience she received from her friends and family. I was amazed by the braveness with which she chose to live her life, as a strong girl who was only 15 years old, yet managed to face her cruel fate with a positive outlook, and tried her best to do whatever she could by herself.

1 Litre of Tears diary
Kito Aya's diary

For those dorama fans who loved “Beautiful Life” that starred Takuya Kimura & Tokiwa Takako, I’d bet you guys will appreciate this story too. I can feel the power of the love from her family and friends in this story, and encouraged me to be positive in my life even though there may be many difficulties and problems. I hope there will be somebody who is willing to translate the original diary by Kito Aya sold in Japan because she has a lot of meaningful words in her diary. This story contains both sadness and love, and I hope you guys will love this dorama as much as I did.

Episode 1 synopsis

This dorama starts right before Aya is confronted with the illness, Spinocerebellar Degeneration, in which the nerve cells of areas necessary for the human body to move and balance–including the cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord–transform and eventually disappear.

Ikeuchi Aya (Sawajiri Erika), a 15 year old girl, is the eldest daughter in a normal Japanese family. She lives with her reliable mother, Shioka, who works as a nutritionist, her father, Mizuo, the wacky owner of a tofu shop, her quiet younger brother, Hiroki, and two younger sisters, the sarcastic Ako and innocent Rika. On the day of her high school entrance exam, she left the house full of energy, but she missed her stop to get off the bus and walk to her high school because she fell asleep. She quickly got off and ran from the bus in the rain when she discovered she was late. She slipped, fell down and injured her knee. At that time, she met Haruto Aso, who was trying to skip the exam. He gave her a ride to school, the administrators allowed them to take the exam (despite the fact that Haruto was uninterested in taking it), which they both later passed.

The new semester began, Aya and Haruto were in the same class, and both were elected as the representative of their class. Aya also joined the basketball team, and was reunited with the boy who she was fond of from the male basketball team. Just as she was beginning to enjoy her high school days, Aya starts to experience some physical difficulties. She always dropped food from her chopsticks, could not estimate the distance of the objects in front of her, could not pour water into a cup without spilling it, and occasionally wobbled while walking. Her mother, Shioka, who was the only one to notice the physical changes in Aya, started to worry about what was going on.

One day, Aya’s life started to change after she tripped and fell. She couldn’t protect herself with her hands while falling and she hurt her face. After this, her illness is slowly revealed and her tragedy begins…

I just have to say this movie has inspired me a lot. I love it! This is the first movie that I’ve cried so much on. My brother always made fun of me because when I can’t stand the sad part anymore I would cry out loud. It was a really touching movie, I finished the movie in two nights. I hope one day they’ll publish Aya’s dairy in English, I’ll get it for sure. It made me feel that life isn’t just a game, but a journey. It’s a path a head of us, we will never know when it’ll end and we’ll have to live our lifes with no regrets. It made me understand the importance of living, to never give up, to never think that today is the end of our lifes, and to always be strong and happy no matter what happens.
This movie also taugh me to never give up on yourself or friends who are sick. To never be ashame of yourself or to never be ashame of your family if they are sick. I have a brother who can’t walk. He’s really tiny, skinny, I should say. He just went through surgery. When I watch this movie it reminds me of my little brother and it makes me cry even harder. He’s still young and still haven’t thought about his life ahead of him. But if one day he can’t walk, it’ll be hard for him as he grow older. He would always need help. Sometimes he tell me that if he had a wish, he’ll love to be able to walk. He wants to run around like us and go every where with us, he hates staying home alone.
It makes me really sad because as the oldest child, I think about his future.
I know he’ll be fine no matter what happens.
This movie has taugh me a lot and I have learn many things from it. I recommand it to anyone who hasn’t watch it. You’ll cry like a baby.

its a good story that had a deep impact to the heart’s of those who are watching this drama. the moral value from this drama is we must apreciate the time that was given to us as it was one of the most pricious thing that God give to us. (folow the muslim teach beside iman)
as we all know that the time of dead for everybody is unknown, so to those who believe that there were a life after dead, we must try to do the best of our effort to be the best man or women in this word.
all the best bye……

this is my favourite drama.I really honour Aya. she is already sick and she’s still so strong knowing her sickness cannot be cured.
This really teaches me how to treasure my life. She who wants to just live a normal life is so hard for her and she is suffering in all the pain and hurt. And she is still so obstimistic.Me who gets un happy with myself for little things and i really learnt to treasure my life right now. She is really very honorable.I watched this drama through channel 56 and i really learnt alot. If i get the chance. i will like to go to her grave and pray for her. Shes a true angel which is seriously too kind.

Congrats to Aya and all Obe Litre of Tears crew members!!!!:)

But from what I’ve seen so far, it’ll be a remarkable drama for anyone, anyone at all. I love this drama, the actors and actresses, story line, graphic, soundstracks, scene and all. Thank You so for this unforgetable story, to who which is responsible for the drama.

Cendra: The one you have seen was probably ”Buku Harian Nayla”, which is a copy of this story, without any rights! It’s plagiarism! The producers of BHN claimed that it was just fiction *yea.. right – they copied all the conversations, and in case they didn’t know.. it was based on a true story -.- Support the original!

Aya Kito = real strong girl
Nayla = fake copy character

For those who were wondering why Haruto didn’t show up in the end: Haruto is not real, so there’s no need to ‘make’ an end/future for him. And IF Haruto was there at the funeral, he MUST say something.. (He can’t just stand there, I mean.. there were too many people! It would only make Haruto less important to let him stand with those bunch of .. ‘not-very-important-people’) In case you didn’t notice; the funeral scene was already the last 5 minutes of the show. One episode is about a hour. There was no time to let Haruto talk. It would only be too long (for one episode). Even if they let Haruto talk (for a couple of SECONDS) – what do you expect him to say in these few seconds? ”Aya, I miss you?” :P That would even be more rushed. Yes, I agree, this ending was rushed. But it would have been even more rushed if Haruto is there..

The last basketballscene is not a flashback, and Haruto did not died. I think the scene was just done to ‘let Aya repeat her message again’: ”Live forever”. It’s not even a scene; it has no story or plot, it was a short message to remind us to Aya’s wish.

^Well, this is what I think.. :P
