1 Litre of Tears

1 Litre of Tears
Sometimes I feel like my body doesn't belong to me. What's happening to me?

This dorama is about a girl who was diagnosed with a disease called “Spinocerebellar Degeneration” when she was 15 years old, and was able to continue her life until her death at the age of 25 years old.

The plot is based on the true story of a Japanese girl named Kito Aya, who had the same disease. She kept writing in her diary to remember her experiences until she could no longer hold a pen. Aya simply wished to live until the end of her life, and the purpose of writing in the diary was to remind herself to not give up. She shed tears many times, at the same time encompassed by the rich love and support from her family, friends, and boyfriend. Her diary “1 Litre of Tears” was published after her death, because of its inspiring and courageous message of

“Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing.”

So far, over 18,000,000 copies of her diary have been sold.

The Review

Haruto & Aya
Haruto and Aya

This dorama features Sawajiri Erika, Nishikido Ryou, Narumi Riko, Yakushimaru Hiroko, Jinnai Takanori and Fujiki Naohito. Sawajiri Erika has powerfully brought out the character of Aya, and people who watch this dorama will feel compassion for her while she suffers from the illness. My tears flowed after almost every episode as I questioned myself, “What would I do if I were Aya?” This is a dorama where you can see a 15 year old young girl who was able to face her disease bravely, and tried her best to treasure the time she spent with her friends, family and boyfriend everyday she could.

To me, this was one of the best doramas of 2005, mainly because the reality of this story has enlightened me. I realized that my life is not that tough compared to those who are suffering from an incurable disease. “1 Litre of Tears” stood out for a reason: it is not because Aya was upset because of her disease, she was touched by the love and patience she received from her friends and family. I was amazed by the braveness with which she chose to live her life, as a strong girl who was only 15 years old, yet managed to face her cruel fate with a positive outlook, and tried her best to do whatever she could by herself.

1 Litre of Tears diary
Kito Aya's diary

For those dorama fans who loved “Beautiful Life” that starred Takuya Kimura & Tokiwa Takako, I’d bet you guys will appreciate this story too. I can feel the power of the love from her family and friends in this story, and encouraged me to be positive in my life even though there may be many difficulties and problems. I hope there will be somebody who is willing to translate the original diary by Kito Aya sold in Japan because she has a lot of meaningful words in her diary. This story contains both sadness and love, and I hope you guys will love this dorama as much as I did.

Episode 1 synopsis

This dorama starts right before Aya is confronted with the illness, Spinocerebellar Degeneration, in which the nerve cells of areas necessary for the human body to move and balance–including the cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord–transform and eventually disappear.

Ikeuchi Aya (Sawajiri Erika), a 15 year old girl, is the eldest daughter in a normal Japanese family. She lives with her reliable mother, Shioka, who works as a nutritionist, her father, Mizuo, the wacky owner of a tofu shop, her quiet younger brother, Hiroki, and two younger sisters, the sarcastic Ako and innocent Rika. On the day of her high school entrance exam, she left the house full of energy, but she missed her stop to get off the bus and walk to her high school because she fell asleep. She quickly got off and ran from the bus in the rain when she discovered she was late. She slipped, fell down and injured her knee. At that time, she met Haruto Aso, who was trying to skip the exam. He gave her a ride to school, the administrators allowed them to take the exam (despite the fact that Haruto was uninterested in taking it), which they both later passed.

The new semester began, Aya and Haruto were in the same class, and both were elected as the representative of their class. Aya also joined the basketball team, and was reunited with the boy who she was fond of from the male basketball team. Just as she was beginning to enjoy her high school days, Aya starts to experience some physical difficulties. She always dropped food from her chopsticks, could not estimate the distance of the objects in front of her, could not pour water into a cup without spilling it, and occasionally wobbled while walking. Her mother, Shioka, who was the only one to notice the physical changes in Aya, started to worry about what was going on.

One day, Aya’s life started to change after she tripped and fell. She couldn’t protect herself with her hands while falling and she hurt her face. After this, her illness is slowly revealed and her tragedy begins…

    It’s really too sad …
I hope that the book was released in France I definitely read it.
Aya was very strong. Me that I will cry and say “Why me?”, I will not lived. I is not enough strength to surmenter such a disease.
    I have admiration for Aya-sama!

Aya simply came from an ordinary family but the relationship between the family’s members was so great and meaningful. I adore her mother and I love asou-kun for being a real gentleman. This series is very heartbreaking, especially when she asked ‘Mom, can I get married someday?’

Thanks for giving us encouragement to live!

I am positive about Aya’s feelings towards Life. She has encouraged not only herself but all those patients who are suffering from diseases. This drama is the gift for all those human beings who wish to back off from their life to go forward with hope to do anything that they want to . Therefore, this drama is really very effective to be encouraged and move towards the life. :)

um..well…what can i say now…this is not a stereotype movie which is only focus on the main character or a triangle love with complex relationships but the life that revolving around her ,family, friends, teachers, etcs those who pushed, supported and motivated her, those who accept her for what she is,those who sympathy for the same age fellow has to face the cruel condition her own,and are those teach us how important existing is,they are-as you not always see them but they always there and by your side,so don’t be affraid to decide something to step forward becoz….life is a precious present since your birth, treasure and cherish it as it’s…..more beautiful than the luxuries you’re wearing….wear it properly and….never to let it go…live to its fullest.

And for Aya,you took me a dozen litres from your “1 litre of tears” , i’m not crying over your cruel destiny but your strength and spirit have create the smile for your every painful day,and i’m cry for being a useless healthy person,to pity those who shamelessly said they’re unhappy and worhless, but from now on ,we’ll be stronger.Thannks,Aya,for the lesson,God bless your soul and Thanks,Erika-chan,u did a fantastic job !!

Living…is the most wonderful thing~~~ I don’t remember how much I cried but Aya really showed a strong message. No matter what condition she was in, she tried harder and harder, no matter what others thought, she was happies just to be alive… She really inspired me, even in her condition, she did all she could, pushing her self to be just barely above the line of life… Never giving up to live to the fullest. She really taught me the true value of life.

Aya, thank you for your inspiring story!

i just finished watching this series and its unbelievable how i was reduced to tears by each episode, truthfully ive never shed tears for any other movie or series which is as beautiful as this one.
i have to thank Aya for bringing out the goodness in everyone; myself included, and helping me realise everyday really is a gift, making it through each day is in itself a miracle enough. i know it really sounds cliche but i really do mean what ive said.
its hard to recover after watching such a seriously thought provoking drama on health, life, love and hope; but im so grateful towards Aya for doing so, to put myself in her position i wouldve never had the strength she did.
up til now, ive never been this inspired or motivated by anyone or anything to go all out and never give up on myself.

i hope she is now somewhere great and leading the beautiful life that she missed out on and absolutely deserves.
the teachings of this story will never leave me, i really cant express how much gratitude i have for Aya in words.
    ^_^

She was 15 years old and she understood her disease and lived with it ,so we can live with our problems, If she can do that, Why didn’t us do?. It’s a really good story, I love it :D. The first time I watched this, i thought that this couldn’t a really good story, but in fact, this is the best story, the best movie that had watched in my life, and I’m not kidding. Walaoweh, as a guy, I never thought I could cry in front of a drama. Sad movie like Titanic, sad drama like “京华春梦” could not make me shed any tears, and yet, after I have falled into the trap of my fren (i.e. my fren recommended this to me), and that after watching the 1st episod from NTV 7 (Malaysia), I went to Petaling Street, bought the whole set of drama and DVD, started watching, and then…..oh my gosh, I “banjir kilat” right away….

Nonetheless, I am really pround of myself for breaking my “record” as it is because of such masterpiece….I also went to buy Aya’s diary from Petaling Street Popular (in Mandarin), and bought the notes from Aya’s mom from KLCC’s Kinokuniya….moreover, my fren also bought the English version of “1 litre of tears” for me from Japan…..wow, what an amazing drama it is. Really awesome.

For those who would like to discuss further regarding this drama, do feel free to add me as fren in http://www.friendster.com (search by “zhuanan”)… what a fortunate thing to have watched this drama…..kudos Aya!!!

This is one of the best drama i’ve ever watch. I never cried this much throughout the year and Aya’s pain trully touched my heart. Her way to think of others and left Haruto for his own good really shed me into tears. When I saw Kito Aya’s picture, it made me think why i am never satisfied in life? Why do i think my life is so meaningless and as i watch the drama, i realized that there are people out there who crave to live longer and they cherish every second of it. All the actors performed great and i’m currently watching the last episode. It is a great story.

This drama has made me realize various things…..it gives u inspiration and tells us how important is this life for us. without realizing anything, we complain abt doing simple stuff but there are people who are not able to do those stuffs too. There are also people who choose to end their life by sucide just becoz he/she isnt getting wat they want ( like the peson they like)…but there are also people who have dreams but that cannot be fulfilled because of their time limit. Its sad thinking how cruely death chooses us….y dont they choose the person that doesnt like to live then rather who enjoys living….
i accept that one day i have to face death too but i dont want that to happen..i want to live forever …i guess am selfish.
ANyway…this drama was awesome…i enjoyed watchin every part of it with tears.

1 litre of tears- This is indeed a great series ever and the first series I actually cried in each of the episode it is so sad to see what had happened to Aya and she still live on her life even though she had the disease and stay strong for herself. Her drive to live and treasure her everyday, and do the best in everything she did even though things getting harder and harder each day …

-Be grateful for still being alive-
THANKS for this touching and inspiring story..
