1 Litre of Tears
Sometimes I feel like my body doesn't belong to me. What's happening to me?

This dorama is about a girl who was diagnosed with a disease called “Spinocerebellar Degeneration” when she was 15 years old, and was able to continue her life until her death at the age of 25 years old.

The plot is based on the true story of a Japanese girl named Kito Aya, who had the same disease. She kept writing in her diary to remember her experiences until she could no longer hold a pen. Aya simply wished to live until the end of her life, and the purpose of writing in the diary was to remind herself to not give up. She shed tears many times, at the same time encompassed by the rich love and support from her family, friends, and boyfriend. Her diary “1 Litre of Tears” was published after her death, because of its inspiring and courageous message of

“Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing.”

So far, over 18,000,000 copies of her diary have been sold.

The Review

Haruto & Aya
Haruto and Aya

This dorama features Sawajiri Erika, Nishikido Ryou, Narumi Riko, Yakushimaru Hiroko, Jinnai Takanori and Fujiki Naohito. Sawajiri Erika has powerfully brought out the character of Aya, and people who watch this dorama will feel compassion for her while she suffers from the illness. My tears flowed after almost every episode as I questioned myself, “What would I do if I were Aya?” This is a dorama where you can see a 15 year old young girl who was able to face her disease bravely, and tried her best to treasure the time she spent with her friends, family and boyfriend everyday she could.

To me, this was one of the best doramas of 2005, mainly because the reality of this story has enlightened me. I realized that my life is not that tough compared to those who are suffering from an incurable disease. “1 Litre of Tears” stood out for a reason: it is not because Aya was upset because of her disease, she was touched by the love and patience she received from her friends and family. I was amazed by the braveness with which she chose to live her life, as a strong girl who was only 15 years old, yet managed to face her cruel fate with a positive outlook, and tried her best to do whatever she could by herself.

1 Litre of Tears diary
Kito Aya's diary

For those dorama fans who loved “Beautiful Life” that starred Takuya Kimura & Tokiwa Takako, I’d bet you guys will appreciate this story too. I can feel the power of the love from her family and friends in this story, and encouraged me to be positive in my life even though there may be many difficulties and problems. I hope there will be somebody who is willing to translate the original diary by Kito Aya sold in Japan because she has a lot of meaningful words in her diary. This story contains both sadness and love, and I hope you guys will love this dorama as much as I did.

Episode 1 synopsis

This dorama starts right before Aya is confronted with the illness, Spinocerebellar Degeneration, in which the nerve cells of areas necessary for the human body to move and balance–including the cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord–transform and eventually disappear.

Ikeuchi Aya (Sawajiri Erika), a 15 year old girl, is the eldest daughter in a normal Japanese family. She lives with her reliable mother, Shioka, who works as a nutritionist, her father, Mizuo, the wacky owner of a tofu shop, her quiet younger brother, Hiroki, and two younger sisters, the sarcastic Ako and innocent Rika. On the day of her high school entrance exam, she left the house full of energy, but she missed her stop to get off the bus and walk to her high school because she fell asleep. She quickly got off and ran from the bus in the rain when she discovered she was late. She slipped, fell down and injured her knee. At that time, she met Haruto Aso, who was trying to skip the exam. He gave her a ride to school, the administrators allowed them to take the exam (despite the fact that Haruto was uninterested in taking it), which they both later passed.

The new semester began, Aya and Haruto were in the same class, and both were elected as the representative of their class. Aya also joined the basketball team, and was reunited with the boy who she was fond of from the male basketball team. Just as she was beginning to enjoy her high school days, Aya starts to experience some physical difficulties. She always dropped food from her chopsticks, could not estimate the distance of the objects in front of her, could not pour water into a cup without spilling it, and occasionally wobbled while walking. Her mother, Shioka, who was the only one to notice the physical changes in Aya, started to worry about what was going on.

One day, Aya’s life started to change after she tripped and fell. She couldn’t protect herself with her hands while falling and she hurt her face. After this, her illness is slowly revealed and her tragedy begins…

when watching this drama, my chest tightness, … I can not breathe!
It took great courage to accept the fact that you will not be able to use your body as usual. if I have it, the first i write is …” I want to die!”. But Aya taught me the meaning of life and the courage to accept and through it, whatever cruel fate that must be received

One of my favorite scenes in the series was when Aya was talking to her doctor. Apparently, Aya overheard from two nurses that her doctor was about to be transferred to another hospital, and she thought that she’s the cause of it since she showed no improvement. When she was speaking to her doctor she asked him if he’s going to transfer to another hospital, the doctor said “No” which gave her relief, after that she asked her doctor if she can donate her body for research, her doctor felt grateful at first because Aya volunteered to help, but in the end he felt useless because Aya seemed to have accepted the fact that she will die because of her disease. The doctor then answered Aya not to think about those things since medical research has been trying to find ways to cure the disease. What’ broke me down was when the doctor ran to his room and saw his research report (words such as “there is hope” etc were displayed) he cried, shut his laptop screen and threw the research papers beside him.

I felt how hopeless he was at that time and had a thought of what if you cannot protect someone who has been expecting and trusting that you could…

I would like to give kudos to those who created this series because they did a wonderful job. Unlike some series that entails religion (which most likely causes cultural differences resulting to negative outcomes e.g.-non believers would tend to ignore it as well as people with other beliefs) this series successfully brought inspiration just by emphasizing that life is important and we must live with positive attitude and see things optimistically. : )

I love this movie, it really makes my cry, it touches my heart. I’d first watched this movie on ABS-CBN, when I was a fourth year highschool student, but I failed to watch some of the series because I’m busy schooling. But I’m so thankful when I became college, and I’m staying at the dormitory, me and my dorm-mates are having fun when I remembered One Liter Of Tears and I opened the topic. It was a great good news for me because one of my dorm-mate has a CD of One Liter of Tears, and she let me borrowed it. And when I went home (every weekend I am going home because my school in college was far from my home, and that’s why I’m staying at the dormitory), I put the One Liter Of Tears CD on the CD Player and watched it, and while I’m putting it on the CD Player, OMG, I feel so excited because it’s been a year when I didn’t watched the full version One Liter Of Tears, I almost sleep only few hours just for this movie, I even watched it twice, and my tears fell on each series, it really touched my heart. Wish I can read her books, but I can’t go on Japan ;c, I’m so proud of Kitou Aya, she didn’t lose hope until her last breath.

I saw this series way back 2007… i really this movie..very touching…it shows to us how really important life is..family ties and friends….Like Aya-chan, she never gave up and that’s what I like her….

I also had crush with the actress portraying Aya-chan, she’s really pretty.

Well i accidentally came across this drama when i suffered from UPPER LIMB ATAXIA whose symptoms are similar to aya’s ,but i recovered completely . Iam thankful to god that , he showed me wat life is through this disease (though not the only way to show ) and after seeing aya , i really understood wat determination is , wat endurance is … i couldn’t stop crying … At the same time we really need to look at support aya’s family gave her . aya’s mother – a very strong hearted person , who gave her confidence till the end , was indeed a reason behind aya’s ‘LIVE ON’ belief…
Blessed is the person who gets such a beautiful family .Well i have started believing ,we should all be really happy with lives we have and do something to society for ppl like aya !!!!!!!!!

Hope you can read this! Na inspired talaga ko kay Aya. May sakit din ako tulad nya but not like her disease! So I tell to my dad to buy me some dvd of 1 Liter Of Tears,so He buy me and then natapos ko sya! Ang sabi pa nya ata wala na nga sya silbe sa mundo, tas wala pa magiging silbe kapag namatay sya,but she’s very very wrong madame sya natulunga because of her diary! Thanks sa mga cast nang 1 Liter Of Tears. Where can I buy 1 Liter Of Tears, here in the PHILLIPINES? I want a English Language and a Japanese Language!

You’ve done well Aya!

Mag-iipon ako para dalawin ang puntod mu promise!
