This dorama is about a girl who was diagnosed with a disease called “Spinocerebellar Degeneration” when she was 15 years old, and was able to continue her life until her death at the age of 25 years old.
The plot is based on the true story of a Japanese girl named Kito Aya, who had the same disease. She kept writing in her diary to remember her experiences until she could no longer hold a pen. Aya simply wished to live until the end of her life, and the purpose of writing in the diary was to remind herself to not give up. She shed tears many times, at the same time encompassed by the rich love and support from her family, friends, and boyfriend. Her diary “1 Litre of Tears” was published after her death, because of its inspiring and courageous message of
“Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing.”
So far, over 18,000,000 copies of her diary have been sold.

The Review
This dorama features Sawajiri Erika, Nishikido Ryou, Narumi Riko, Yakushimaru Hiroko, Jinnai Takanori and Fujiki Naohito. Sawajiri Erika has powerfully brought out the character of Aya, and people who watch this dorama will feel compassion for her while she suffers from the illness. My tears flowed after almost every episode as I questioned myself, “What would I do if I were Aya?” This is a dorama where you can see a 15 year old young girl who was able to face her disease bravely, and tried her best to treasure the time she spent with her friends, family and boyfriend everyday she could.
To me, this was one of the best doramas of 2005, mainly because the reality of this story has enlightened me. I realized that my life is not that tough compared to those who are suffering from an incurable disease. “1 Litre of Tears” stood out for a reason: it is not because Aya was upset because of her disease, she was touched by the love and patience she received from her friends and family. I was amazed by the braveness with which she chose to live her life, as a strong girl who was only 15 years old, yet managed to face her cruel fate with a positive outlook, and tried her best to do whatever she could by herself.
For those dorama fans who loved “Beautiful Life” that starred Takuya Kimura & Tokiwa Takako, I’d bet you guys will appreciate this story too. I can feel the power of the love from her family and friends in this story, and encouraged me to be positive in my life even though there may be many difficulties and problems. I hope there will be somebody who is willing to translate the original diary by Kito Aya sold in Japan because she has a lot of meaningful words in her diary. This story contains both sadness and love, and I hope you guys will love this dorama as much as I did.
Episode 1 synopsis
This dorama starts right before Aya is confronted with the illness, Spinocerebellar Degeneration, in which the nerve cells of areas necessary for the human body to move and balance–including the cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord–transform and eventually disappear.
Ikeuchi Aya (Sawajiri Erika), a 15 year old girl, is the eldest daughter in a normal Japanese family. She lives with her reliable mother, Shioka, who works as a nutritionist, her father, Mizuo, the wacky owner of a tofu shop, her quiet younger brother, Hiroki, and two younger sisters, the sarcastic Ako and innocent Rika. On the day of her high school entrance exam, she left the house full of energy, but she missed her stop to get off the bus and walk to her high school because she fell asleep. She quickly got off and ran from the bus in the rain when she discovered she was late. She slipped, fell down and injured her knee. At that time, she met Haruto Aso, who was trying to skip the exam. He gave her a ride to school, the administrators allowed them to take the exam (despite the fact that Haruto was uninterested in taking it), which they both later passed.
The new semester began, Aya and Haruto were in the same class, and both were elected as the representative of their class. Aya also joined the basketball team, and was reunited with the boy who she was fond of from the male basketball team. Just as she was beginning to enjoy her high school days, Aya starts to experience some physical difficulties. She always dropped food from her chopsticks, could not estimate the distance of the objects in front of her, could not pour water into a cup without spilling it, and occasionally wobbled while walking. Her mother, Shioka, who was the only one to notice the physical changes in Aya, started to worry about what was going on.
One day, Aya’s life started to change after she tripped and fell. She couldn’t protect herself with her hands while falling and she hurt her face. After this, her illness is slowly revealed and her tragedy begins…

hi…
I’m from Indonesia and I agree with all of opinion in here
because i think “buku harian nayla” really copied from 1 litre of tears
when I watch 1 litre of tears I always cry but its different condition when I watched the Indonesian version, I just laught
as Indonesian I Ashamed and angry with that drama.
I’m not drama lover, because 1 litre of tears I become love.
everytime I watch this drama, and everytime I cried
I think, when we put all our tears in a litermass it would become like ” 1 liter of tears”. I cried in this crama the most I ever did…….I think it was a good idea to make this drama official. Im very toutches. An …sorry ;) but im actually an German girl and dont can write this good englisch…. nahhhhh
Im happy that I see this drama.
And a tipp from me: You also must look the taiwan drama ” Prince who turns into a frog” this story is really funny hehehe
Bye bye
i love this movie it sooooo good!!!!! =]
guys who from indonesia, you know what i don’t think this is the first time those movie producer in indonesia copied a movies from other countries. you remember ” ungu violet”..? that’s movie also copied from korean movie and song from KISS with title ” because i’m a girl” so not only “Buku Harian Nayla” that movie producer from indonesia copied this japanese movie ” 1 littre of tears”
if they keep copying..when they can be really success to make their own movies?
to be honest, i say they are really embarrasing and dumb…
Please.. do take action, I’m pissed off with my own country’s TV station, RCTI! They have robbed Kitou Aya’s great story to make fortune, and teh worse thing is, they didn’t ask for any permission. This is so embarrasing and humiliating for me as an Indonesian.. especially after I saw the copy.
How could they do this? 1 Litre Of Tears is too good to be copied, RCTI can’t even remake the simplest thing on that movie, the warmth of Aya’s family.. every aspect of 1 LItre Of Tears were being copied, but they can’t copy the essence of the movie..
I’m angry, not only as a movie-maniac, but also as a christian, because that copy of 1 Litre Of Tears was made for Christmas event..
I’ve spread an e-mail of my protest, I really hope that RCTI can get consequences from their cursed actions!!
this story inspire me alot…tat we need to treasure our life everyday…n make it a enjoyable day

I think 1 litre of tears is the most amazing dorama. But, it make me cry so much,, and also touching my heart..
I love this drama (based on true story), it really teaches me to appreciate life. I think i would not forget this drama in my lifetime.
it’s really a drama that can make u cry, passion, and encouraging a lot..
many wise words that came out from one little girl that i believe can change others ppl thought and yet influencing others to the things in different way ..
it’s hard to keep smile when u know that u have to carry these kindof burden, i admire her for who she is and the message she leave to us..
I think everyone who loves this drama should do something about this illegal coppying. I try to write to several Indonesian newspaper. I hope they will listen and published the email. So at least the rest of Indonesia realize that RCTI and Sinemart copy 1 lt of tears.
hi!!
anyone has the SHEET of the MAIN THEME????
thx!!
love the drama, never cried so much…
hi guys.. i’m from INDONESIA.. n i’m currently ASHAMED, and angry with my own country’s PRODUCTION.. there’s a copy of ONE LITRE OF TEARS in INDONESIA VERSION.. everything from the trailer, even the dialog n scenes ARE COPIED!!!.. and u know wat!? D worst part, in d end of d drama, it’s stated dat it’s only fiction, n also there’s a writer who claimed dat she wrote the story!!.. i can’t just let this happen.. can anyone help me to do a protest to the FUJI TV about this plagirism by the RCTI TV on ONE LITRE OF TEARS?.. by emailing to FUJI TV.. as a fan and a person who’s been touched by the movie.. i’m really sad to see this fact.. this thing has to be stopped.. a very good story is badly retold..n d worst, it’s bein claimed by another person as a fiction!!!..
Where do i start.. 1 litre of tears is sooo good!! i cried through most of the episodes.. i would recommend it to those who haven’t watched it..The character Aya was very inspiring… her persistancy to live and not just give up is extremely amazing.. I doubt many people can stay as strong as Aya if faced with that disease. And while Aya had to cope with the limitions of that disease, she had strong considerations for the people around her. Her consideration for people around her probably moved me most. Because she didn’t feel sorry for herself all day but instead she thought about the troubles that she gave to her peers and parents and tried hard herself too. 1 litre of tears is a great drama and also real life story!! If you haven’t watched it.. watch it!! If you’ve watched it.. watch it again..everytime you will be able to grasp something new and inspiring from this moving story..
i really like this dorama.last night i’ve seen until 6 episodes. and i’ve been crying for 7 times. i don’t know how many times i will cry again until the last episodes.
mmm,i also dissappointed that indonesia cheat in Buku Harian Nayla. it is all the same…..>=I
wow…i love this movie..even though i only watch 3 episode through youtube
i can see this movie is really touching..i have been searching through youtube to find if someone download that movie completely with english subtitle for 2 weeks but i couldn’t find it.
if there is someone out there and read this msg…could you please let me know where i can watch this movie completely online.
thank you…
ps: erika is super kawaii…
actually, i am melancolik man. But i am not crying so often.
my friend ask me to watch this film series and she really want to see i am crying
and she really see my tears (“_”)
1 litre of tears has been copied by indonesia. the title is nayla’s diary.but nayla’s diary, it isn’t too bad. so touching, same like 1 litre of tears
i don’t like indonesia’s sinetron ‘buku harian Nayla’…
It really embarass me!!!
it copied everthing!!!!!
Does RCTI have the lisence??
How about you??
Absolutely marvelous story. Although I am not sure which parts were made up and which parts are true to her life, the message comes across very clearly and the strength of this girl is inspiring. She would be very happy to see that she has been able to influence and uplift this many people after her passing. Words can’t express how touched I am with her strength. Although I did not cry while watching, I felt tears swell up from time to time but what I enjoyed most was laughing with her when she was enjoying herself. The actress did a spendid job portraying her and I commend her as well.
For those who are wondering more about SCA (or SCD as the doctor in this show mentions, wikipedia has a slightly more detailed but understandable explanation of it all http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinocerebellar_ataxia . Basically, it is believed to be mainly caused by CAG repeats, which encode for poly Q tracts in proteins. This leads to disturbances in many cellular processes (there are also books on these if anyone’s interested) and the fact that it’s a poly Q disease means it shares some pathological features of huntington’s disease so if someone can find a cure for Htt, they can probably also use it to treat SCA.
This dorama is such an amazing dorama. It really does make me realize to appreciate my life more since I am far more lucky than Aya. Her spirit is the best. And her family shows us what a family means. Shame on me for never be grateful enough for what I have in my life. From now on, let’s be worth our life more and do our best! Ganbatte ne, minasan!
Omg, i LOVED 1 Litre of Tears.
It was so sad..
i cried so much, my mom got mad because i used up a whole box of tissues!
i’d like to become a doctor when i become an adult, and i’ve learned about spinocerebellum in this dorama.
1 Litre of Tears will surely not be forgotten.
Does anyone know the email of Fuji TV? I really want to report the whole act of Indonesian’s sinemart plagiarsing this dorama into Nayla’s Diary thing. >=|
This is the saddest TV series I’ve ever watched in my entire life. I recommend it.
yah… i also think the same way as oky…
this drama has been copied in indonesia. this drama’s title is buku harian nayla or nayla’s diary.
i don’t really know about it, but i don’t like copy-cat (in indonesia we usually call ppl who likes to copy our creation..)
yah…
dat’s all.
i like this drama very much…
even though i havn’t watch it yet…
I agree with Oky. It’s very shame if RCTI didn’t have the license. Because, in Indonesia, there was a lot of drama that they take from korean drama, taiwan drama, and now?! Japanese dorama!!! Oh My God. But, I really wanted to watch i litre of tears… ~_~
there are one drama in Indonesia that looks like this drama. not only looks like but same. ON EVERYTHING. the drama named catatan harian nayla ( Nayla’s diary ). showed on RCTI each Monday 21.00. I dont know if RCTI has got the licensed. But SHAME ON RCTI did such plagiarism.
1 one litre of tears is the saddest drama i ever seen. I’m a medical students and this movie touch me a lot
i’m really like this film!!!
