Chieco Kawabe is definitely no newcomer to the Japanese entertainment world. Apart from being a singer, she is also an actress and a model for a variety of teen fashion magazines which has gotten her a lot of attention since she was a young girl. Now at the age of eighteen she has already released a full album and in 2005 Chieco returned and released a maxi single titled “Candy Baby/Mermaid”. The cover artwork features Chieco with a fork and a knife in front of a plate full of strawberries while she observes her dog with an amusing expression on her face. With her sweet and cute vocals Chieco sings about dealing with feelings and love with gusto.
1. Candy Baby
This song is what attracted my attention to Chieco’s music. “Candy Baby” is an upbeat, fun pop-rock song with an extremely cheerful and carefree tone. The tempo is extremely fast and lively giving it a bubble-gum flavour and the chorus is addictive beyond belief. Personally I do think that this song is perfect for dancing along to or to blare while riding the car after a stressful day. It’s one of those songs which is light-hearted and has a really fresh feel to it.
The lyrics have a unique touch even if they are not really what you’d call poetic or conceptual, they do present the listener with the feelings and inner thoughts of this girl as she grows to fall in love with her significant other. Her English phrases were also extremely amusing and cute to listen. As for promotional clip, it was clearly an attempt at experimenting with different personalities which is quite entertaining and suitable for a song of this kind.

2. Mermaid
“Mermaid” is a mellow ballad with a pensive mood with some minor rock elements inserted within the chorus. I have enjoyed how her vocals sound more mature and clear in this song. The song starts off with the use of a guitar which gives a positive feeling which slowly dissolves into a more poignant tone within the chorus. The underlying theme of this song is definitely more serious and emotional however this song still emanates a relaxing aura with the use of the backing vocals.
The lyrics of “Mermaid” are more personal and less generic. Lyrics like “Is there someone listening to this song who knows what it’s like to be alone?” I was also impressed to note how her English pronunciation is so clear and cleverly inserted in a manner that it fits perfectly within the context of the song which is rare within Japanese singers.

Conclusion
I really do believe that this is her best single to date and one of my favourite singles ever. Chieco manages to deliver a fresh feeling with her clear vocals and these two songs which excel in quality which is refreshing. “Candy Baby” is definitely her best pop song she’s ever released with an original style and a catchy beat, while “Mermaid” is a slower song which balanced out the whole mood of this single. This is quite promising and I’m quite sure that her upcoming releases shall be even more exciting in the future, so I suggest you keep an eye on Chieco.

Aww, I love Candy Baby! It’s sooo cute! Makes me wanna run around in circles. I really love her voice. It’s funny how her voice sounds so much different in Candy Baby then Mermaid. ^^ Great article, Rii-chan!

Not only is Chieco absolutely adorable, but her song Candy Baby is EXTREMELY catchy. I find myself listening to it over and over. The PV is also great. It really compliments the fun feel of the song. It had me giggling quite a bit.
She has a really great voice, which I can definitely see in Mermaid. It’s such a nice contrast to Candy Baby and it makes for a wonderful and complete feeling single! I’ll definitely be looking into more from her. Thank you for introducing me to Chieco. :)

The first song somehow reminds me SO much of Otsuka Ai, the way it’s so happy and upbeat :)! Definitely something different from what I’ve heard of her before. Mermaid is a beautiful song, I always loved acoustic ballads, and while her voice isn’t the best, I think it sounds quite nice here.
