Well that was definitely a unique single! I really enjoyed the concept of this single, especially the promotional video. I do agree with the author though, the cover artwork is not so pleasant...

I first saw the video on the Yamanote Line in Tokyo. Now I watch the video everyday to get me in a good mood. I am going to check out some of their older songs...can anyone recommend some good ones..?

[...] i don’t know what made me think of it, but when i was in japan this summer, i heard a song from the band “southern all stars”. the song was kind of catchy, and the people performing it were almost as old as my parents, but they had hot chicks dancing in hula skirts so i was cool with it all. then, the other day i stumbled on a music blog that has all sorts of wacky j-pop and j-rock stuff on it. now, i’ll be the first to tell you that there’s alot of japanese music that just doesn’t click with me. there’s something about the writing… too many chords? to much engrish? overly complex melodies? i’m really not sure, but there’s some awesomely cool stuff on this site. you can even listen to these wacky songs, or watch the awesomely beach boysish video. check it out here. also, maybe the reason i like this song is the poster for the single?
Well Melissa the Southern All Stars are fairly old. Their band started in the late 70's. This is the 52nd or 53rd single that they have released. They are considered the number one most influential band in Japan according to HMV. They have been linked as the musical cultural revolution in Japan, they are considered the reason for the popish music you find today in Japan. Personally I like this song. It is just a fun summer tune.

Ahhh~ I see, no one has yet to comment on the number one oricon song yet lol. I'm not sure what's the deal with the Southern All Stars and how come their so popular, I don't really think much of their music. This was a nice song though, all their music has some sort of summer feel to them. I wonder how old these guys are?
