Into the Stars cover Artist: OLIVIA
Title: Into the Stars1
Release Date: 2002.09.04
Peak Position: #99
Label: cutting edge

Since OLIVIA’s great comeback single “a little pain” has already been released in June, it’s a nice opportunity to consider some of her older releases. So let’s go back and see her most ‘recent’ single, which happens to be almost 4 years old. Oddly enough “Into The Stars” is her least selling single, charting at #99 for one single week. However do not think though that this has to do with the quality of this single, at all. Olivia isn’t as popular as those icons that come in our mind when we think about the Japanese music industry, although that makes her even cooler. “Into the Stars” is also the last production she made in Japanese; the rest were completely in English (till ‘a little pain’). Personally I’d buy this even just because the cover.

1. Into the Stars

This one is one of my favorites by OLIVIA; it’s a piece of her more ‘bright’ self (she really has diverse sides), so it’s calm and always pleasing to listen to. The melody is very sweet. It can be considered a pop ballad-like song, but the guitar element and the climax at the chorus make it more of a rock/pop based, stronger song. The song is sung in two languages: partly in English, partly in Japanese. Both of these languages are switched around quite cleverly, something that also helps fan memorizing the lyrics and singing along with ease. The music and the lyrics are carefully constructed to bring out each other, resulting in an extremely vibrant song. “You take my heart to a place I want, forever” is probably the most part that stands out within the English lyrics.

The PV is rather nice and cute: a humanoid almost breaks down after noticing she’s not wearing her wedding ring. Eventually, she successfully sends an SOS signal to her home/husband.

Rating: ★★★★★

2. Ballerina

This melodious B-side is as good as the A-side. The song starts with a nice violin, which stays throughout the song in the distant background to gently accompany the more modern sounds of the instruments. The same pattern does take place with another classical instrument – the piano, to a lesser extent though. The atmosphere of this great ballad, even with its electric music, is extremely ethereal, with Olivia’s voice being aerie and soothing. The lyrics are mostly in Japanese, with some English words thrown in, giving that touch of variety within the lyrics. This song is a very nice surprise since many artists don’t release often quality B-sides; Ballerina could easily stand alone as a single on its own.

Rating: ★★★★★

Concluding the single review, it might be a bit late to bring the single back to the charts but it is definitely one of Olivia’s most well-polished works, that deserves a lot more attention than it got. Its quality, especially by a singer who is supposed to be quite fringy, is outstanding.

Overall Rating: ★★★★★

At this point though, I’d like to write a few words about the other incarnations of this A-side in two subsequent albums of OLIVIA:

Into the Stars2
- #3 in the “Internal Bleeding Strawberry” mini-album

This version is musically identical to the original version, however, the lyrics are sung entirely in English. The song loses a lot of its touch but not as much as other Japanese songs do when translated (e.g. Passion – Sanctuary). However, being only in one language makes it more of a ‘traditional’ song – perfect for luring people unfamiliar with Japanese. Thus it also becomes a lot more approachable to her English-speaking fans. Actually it’s a translation of the Japanese song by OLIVIA herself, so it can be doubtlessly treated as an official translation. Maybe the words aren’t exact, with the translation being a rough one, but the feeling OLIVIA wants to express stays the same (e.g. the original version has two lyrically different choruses, the English one though has only one, but it concentrates the meaning of both the originals).

Rating: ★★★★½

Into the Stars(Live Arrangement version)
- #13 in the “The Lost Lolli” album

This one is with the English lyrics as well, but it has a whole new atmosphere of its own. In this case though the English language helps the song to give out this edgier live feeling. With no pop-like beats but with mostly (electric) guitars and drums it really appears as a very strong rock song in live. The music is a lot harder, applying a more ‘raging’ feeling that the first version lacked. At one point, where Olivia sings in the background softly ‘into the stars’ there’s a bold, electrified guitar chord that gives out an excellent effect. This version is an equally great alternative to the original.
P.S.: Don’t try this without a woofer.

Rating: ★★★★★

Maybe OLIVIA’s upcoming single due to October is named “Starless Night” but this song’s charm is literally “Into the Stars”.

________

1 There’s speculation whether the ‘The’ in the title is with the t capitalized or not. The only official information is that in “Into the Stars (Live Arrangement version)” ‘the’ isn’t capitalised. The songs are generally – but not always – found with all their word initials as capitals. I use the latter format throughout the article because if there’s a possibility of a mistake that would be more likely the lack of attention and careless rendering of the title to the boring standards.

2 This version is titled exactly like the original with no ‘English version’ in any parenthesis, etc. like in example her “Dress me up (English version)”.

This is my personal contribution to clog the front page of Channel-Ai’s blog with fresh articles for its 1st anniversary! I picked one of my most special and favorite songs and did my best for the article trying to create an excellent review on this special day for our favorite blog. I remember back then, last summer, when eyn would gather us – in order to make us familiar with article-writing – in those crazy chats that are my best Internet highlights! Although I am of the first members of this blog, I’ve only written 3 articles in this 1 year span, of which I’m ashamed ;_; So I’m dedicating this symbolic entry to eyn, this extraordinary example of webmaster who made the forum and the blog such elaborate, pwing and xoning places!

I want also to thank Rinoa a lot for helping me tweak the article’s English ^_^

Wow, I am surprised I have never heard of her before. I am very fond of the second song Ballerina. It is very smooth and relaxing. I know this may sound a little cheesy, but I was nearly moved to tears by how beautiful it sounds.

I can’t wait to hear more from her.
