Sexy Night ~Wasurerarenai Kare~ ROMANS: Sexy Night ~Wasurerarenai Kare~
01. SEXY NIGHT ~Wasurerarenai Kare~
03. SEXY NIGHT ~Wasurerarenai Kare~ (Instrumental)

ROMANS (which is a play on words and is pronounced “romance”) was a one single group of the Hello! Project, consisting of Mari Yaguchi and Rika Ishikawa who were from Morning Musume, Mai Satoda from Country Musume, Hitomi Saitou from Melon Kinenbi, and Ayaka of Coconuts Musume. They took on a sexy theme, with a mature and sexy single and clothing. They released their only single, SEXY NIGHT ~Wasurerarenai Kare~ on August 20th, 2003.

ROMANS was formed because the members were all in a TV show together, Sexy Onna Juku. This one-shot group was different because it didn’t consist of solo singers, like Gomattou and Nochiura Natsumi. Instead, this group had members of Morning Musume, Country Musume, Melon Kinenbi, and Coconuts Musume, which made it somewhat like a shuffle unit.

I actually really like this group and their single. The c/w is kind of.. off, but the a-side is so good! It doesn’t even sound cheesy. You know.. when you get a bunch of H!P girls together, and they sing a cool hip hoppy song, it’s hard for it to not feel too fake. These girls really sound good together, with Ayaka and Hitomi just rapping, and the others singing. That style was later seen in 7AIR.

The title track, SEXY NIGHT ~Wasurerarenai Kare~ is really a great song. It’s got a LITTLE bit of a rock flare, but is mostly a R&B/hip hop song. It’s got its faster moments and slower moments, but overall it’s kind of a mid-tempo song.

I love the beginning – it’s very airy and flowy, and blends in beautifully to the beginning of the chorus. Then the verses come along, which include the rapping part of just Ayaka and Hitomi. The rap is quite good. It’s not too fast or slow; it’s mid-tempo and has a great rhythm. Normally, I don’t like it when members “lyric hog” and some don’t get actual singing lines, but this works pretty well. Ayaka and Hitomi do the rapping thing fairly good. They do a bunch of “yeah yeah”ing throughout the song, which I’m not as crazy ’bout. But, if it wasn’t THEM doing it.. you know who it would be! Yeah, the MVP (male vocal person), would definitely be taking those spots.. Ayaka and Hitomi do it just fine, thanks very much. :P

There are instrumental breaks throughout the song, which are great. They make great use of space and time, and they’re not just there to waste your life, like some are. The instruments and sounds used throughout this song are great, and aren’t just the typical hip hop sounds.

The lyrics in this song are, surprisingly, pretty good. Atleast they make sense, unlike some other songs. It’s about a jealous girlfriend, it seems, or atleast a jealous ex. It talks about how now, there’s awkwardness and such. Read the lyrics here on Project Hello. This song also gave way to a H!P lyrical phenomenon, “CRY CRYING IN THE BED,” although it seems to be pronounced as “CRY, CRY IN THE BED,” without the “ING.”

As you could probably tell, I LOVE this song. I really, really do. I’m gonna give it a big ol’ 5 out of 5, yay! They deserve it.

ROMAN, the b-side, is, unfortunately, not as spectacular. Y’all probably wanted another 100 percent rating, but ROMAN isn’t worth 5/5. So, they have this AMAZING hip hoppy song, and the b-side doesn’t follow that song style. I wish they did, then this single would have been absolutely amazing.

Anyways, ROMAN is an upbeat song. It’s not quite upbeat upbeat H!P HAPPY YAY YAY, but it’s a notch higher than the mid-tempo status. It actually reminds me of a Biyuuden song. I mean, this song is okay, but not up to par with the a-side at all. There’s an out of place “pi pu po, pi pu po” whispery part by Rika. I think they’re trying to get a European feel with that, but it came out of the blue. The end is really, really weird, with weird sounds and stuff. It almost seems like Mari’s voice is cut off. Weird.

I would’ve liked this song to be by another group. Maybe they could have saved it 3 years for Biyuuden? I don’t know. The a-side still kicks behind, so yay!

Rating: ★★★½☆

You can probably tell that I love ROMANS! They were a great idea. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I do.

Overall Rating: ★★★★½

Wow. Awesome group. I must say the ROMANS are quite an interesting group. The promotional video is really beautiful. I love the whole atmosphere and outfits that they wore. All the girls manage to look quite elegant and classy, which is a huge plus. I must say this song is probably my favourite since it does manage to create an interesting style. Thanks again Laina :D I think slowly I’m getting into H!P thanks to your articles.
