In western countries, there is more anime imported than TV series or movies, so there is much more exposure to Japanese music through anime. For example, in Japan, Bump of Chicken got more popular after their music was used in the TV series 天体観測 (Tentai Kansoku). But Japanese TV dramas are usually bought up only by Asian countries. So J-POP hasn't much spread to Western countries through TV dramas, like it did in Asia. Thanks to Japanese TV dramas exportation, Japanese music became big in many Asian countries. Visual kei has a pretty big underground following, because it's pretty different and the musicians have pretty crazy outfits and appearances, which crosses language barriers.
