Hey guys, my friends and I have had this chart for more than a year now, in fact, everytime someone visits our house, we try and get them to rate themselves on it... where do you guys fall here?
There are 10 Levels of Geek on this chart... starting from the top (Level 1) all the way to Level 10 in the bottom...
My Rank
Level 4 (Level 6 maybe)*
Level 4: Trekkie/Role Playing Gamer
*Explanation: Level 6 on the right of the chart:
People who alter scans of supermodels to make them look like super heroines.
I'm slightly different, I have in the past on multiple occassions used pictures of models as guides to postures for drawing female characters from anime... some of my friends believe that that counts as almost Level 6

Hmm... I rarely play video games anymore, but I suppose I fall under Level 4 for playing RPG's sometimes. A lot of things on this chart are quite random, and it's funny to see furries in a class of its own...
So you interrogate your guests with this complex chart, eh? Haha, I wonder what most of them say...
You should make a survey out of this and record the results to see Ch-Ai's Geek Average. (somewhere between 3-4) |

yeah we do interrogate them but its more like a contest in our house to see who wins... erm winning is how higher up in level you are... obviously
as for a ch-ai average... that's the idea

The only part I can relate to on there is the bit about insisting on Anime having subtitles I actually had an arguement about that with my dad today. Film4 is now a free channel, better yet... they're having a Studio Ghibli season... but I'm not watching any of it because they're only showing the English dubbed versions. I also use the word Japanimation too much. |

dammit i wish i had freeview T_T
to be honest, i think that kiki's delivery service is actually nicely dubbed. but yeah no doubt, films like princess mononoke, howl's moving castle, lupin iii, laputa, tonari no totoro and spirited away, are much better in their original japanese...
speaking of ghibli, heard much about their new film that started in japan last week called gedo senki ... its based on ursula leguin's 6 book series - tales from earthsea. the main theme from that movie is done by teshima aoi who's also a seiyuu in the film. you can listen to the song here.

Ah yes... Tales from Earthsea.
My mom apparently read in Asahi news somewhere that this new film didn't do so well. I haven't seen it myself of course, but I'm not too surprised since Howl's Moving Castle didn't get much attention either. Both are novel-to-film adaptations, however I'm not sure if this explains why they aren't as popular as some of Studio Ghibli's other works like Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. Another thing to keep in mind is that Tales from Earthsea is directed by Miyazaki's son, not Miyazaki himself.
Anyway, I doubt anyone at Ch-Ai is going to be higher than Level 5.
[Though it would be nice to see an interesting average... like 4-6. ] |

That chart is hilarious, horizon180!
Sadly, I could place many a friend and acquaintance on most of the levels presented...
But I'm going to have to agree with marktobias in that I could only identify myself with insisting upon subtitles [for all foreign work, in general]--well, that and liking comics, but that's still only on level 3.
However, the term 'Japanimation' makes my skin crawl. Especially considering the fact that most of the time I hear it, the person is pronouncing it wrong, w/ emphasis on the first three letters (if you get my drift).
The Studio Ghibli dubs aren't as bad as some, but they're terribly irksome and the scripts have been totally Disney-fied and dumbed down (why is a glossary/intro to Japanese cultural facts so difficult to add?).
[note: the dub of Kiki's Delivery Service changed part of the ending... so unnecessary... ]
But just the general attitude of Disney regarding the Studio Ghibli pieces makes me mad, tho... They only use 'name actors' to dub, as if the movie can't carry itself otherwise. This is taking away very high-profile jobs from seasoned voice-over actors (who are *much* more understanding of/suited for most of the roles) in favor of a name to slap on the box...
Plus, they only then include 'dubtitles'. Why not both kinds? argh.

The source material has *a lot* to do with it. It's not simply because they're based on novels, but because they aren't flowing directly from Miyazaki's imagination. [Does that make sense...?]
What I mean is, besides the beautiful visuals and tender stories, Studio Ghibli's draw is very much rooted in the incredible originality of character design and development straight out of Miyazaki's head [Takahata-san, too].
I don't think they have as much freedom and things don't 'fit together' as smoothly when working from a pre-existing novel.
Kiki, I believe, is also from a book, and while it is very good and touching, you'd be hard pressed to convince me it is more magical and awe-inspiring than Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, or (my personal favorite) My Neighbor Totoro.
The news of Gedo Senki not doing well doesn't really surprise me. Even I, a die-hard Studio Ghibli fan, was non-plussed upon seeing the trailers for it... I will still see it when given the chance (and prob buy it too), but will do so with great trepidation...
Miyazaki's been trying to find his successor for a while now... He was going to pass Ghibli on to someone, but I believe he unexpectedly passed away.
I read that he wasn't thrilled about his son heading this project...
...wonder how it'll do in the long run... |

ok I put myself in 4 but the chart was super confusing.
From the chart here is what referes to me:
-Video Gamers
-Roleplaying Gamers(not sure what thi smeans exactly, I play final fantasy games if that counts but if it mean cosplaying then no I'm not in this catagorey)
-Pokemon fans over the age of six (I love the games but am not a fan of the anime. the games are really cool because they always use all the futures of the system they are on. I can't wait for the new ones that let you trade and battle and other suff over Wifi)
-Anime fans who insist on subtitles(I can't read japanese so if I watch something I wanna know whats happening. Sometimes I will watch raw episodes if there is no sub)
And thats all since I don't have anything to do with fanfics or comic books. They require to much reading and I am to lazy to do that, Although I do read the new chapter of naruto manga every week when it comes out. |

[Does that make sense...?] Yes, this does make sense. At first I believed that it was because of the lack of originality (coming from a novel), but I shouldn't have assumed that the novel-based idea explains the movies' unpopularity. After all, how many people actually read the books *before* watching the movies and can honestly admit that the movie was just a rip-off or something (because not everyone has read them)? It wouldn't have made any sense...
Interesting to know that Kiki was from a book as well. I've never known this, and yet I've never cared for that movie as much. I must admit that I do enjoy Studio Ghibli's originality. Despite the fact that the stories aren't completely from Ghibli, those particular films failed to captivate me nonetheless. |

Hmmm couldn't get better than a 4... although when I used to read superhero comics I did actually only ever read X-Men related stuff, so I was a 6 for a bit |

It would seem that people level 7 or above are hard to come across here at Channel-Ai. Perhaps we should assume that "furries" is really asking for a lot...
Eh, I may actually fall under the level 6 category now that I think about it. Though it's not a replica from a movie or anything, I did buy a rather gaudy steel halberd. It's not like I can use it anywhere (it's just for show I suppose), so yes, it's very characteristic of a level 6 geek. |

Ok, so I'm a Comic Book fan. I also read the occasional Super-hero comic book. I also play Video Games, specially RPGs. That's two of them.
I write and draw, but not that kind of fantasy. So... Let's say that doesn't count.
I'm between 4 and 6. (That's what I understood about it anyway)
