Every time I listen to a song of Ai-chin/Ikoman, especially B-side songs you don't think much about such as Hanikami Jane, I'm simply amazed by how brilliant they are. I'm always looking forward to the bridges in her songs as much as the lyrics. Momo no Hanabira, Hanikami Jane, Mirai Taxi, Rocket Sneaker, those bridges are always great, the latter two have such a build up I wish I could see them performed live just once.
You don't see that brilliance in the new charting songs which seem to be an afterthought to match some dance choreography for the already planned in advance PVs. I really like SNSD, but those are just toe tapping songs; the heart is missing from nearly all of them.
Hopefully this era of dance-pop dance troop bands will be short lived. The USA went through a similar phase in the late 1990's. Remember all of those boy bands? 98 Degrees, N-Sync, Backstreet Boys...they're all long gone now (except for JT). Now we are seeing the return of some real singer songwriters to the top charts in the US. Perhaps in 5-6 years we will see the BONNIE PINKs and Ai-Chins, the super talented anti-idols who write music and lyrics from their own experiences, back on top of Oricon.
At least I can hope. I am a patient person.  |
