Kanon is a Japanese singer-songwriter I happened to come across through the music in the video game Tales of Legendia. There are two notable tracks in the game's OST in which a woman's outstandingly beautiful voice is heard singing in a fictitious language indigenous to the game's world. I was curious to know who this voice belonged to and came across the artist Kanon. Apparently this contribution to avex has attracted new fans across the globe (mostly in western culture) but sadly not so much in Japan. Sony Music Japan seems to do far too little to promote this extremely talented singer, and it's a shame that she achieved much of her global recognition only when she temporarily worked with avex trax to help create the music in the Tales of Legendia soundtrack.
Kanon was born in Japan but spent a good portion of her life growing up overseas. Growing up in a purely western culture, she took on many western tastes in music that is clearly reflected in her own music and compositions. Her music is officially recognized as 'New Age' which is a genre that most casual listeners deem negligible, especially when compared to the more conventional mainstream music such as J-Pop, rock, and R&B. Kanon's new releases are usually original works equipped with music and lyrics written by her; however, a lot of her songs are either arrangements of classical pieces or covers of popular songs from native and western cultures. She also plays classical piano which you can hear in many of her songs. Because her music may be too unconventional for Japanese listeners, her singles and albums sell very poorly, often times struggling to chart. Her most recent album [Sanctuary] had a peak position of 262.
Despite having an almost non-existent fanbase in Japan, Kanon is still highly regarded and well-known in her role as an icon--more specifically--Japan's national representative in worldly music affairs. She sang the national anthem during the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany-Asia event and was even invited to perform at MIDEM 2007 as Japan's elite musical ambassador. This is a top-honors position. Her song Brand New Breeze is currently being used as the theme for the anime Kiniro no Corda ~primo passo~.
Her voice is indeed fluent and very water-like in quality--the quintessence of purity with that hint of erogenic nature. She's also very beautiful. In my opinion, her vocal prowess is unrivaled in Japan. Whether this is a result of her musical studies overseas or not is a debatable issue that can be tabled for discussion. At any rate, I highly recommend this underrated artist to everyone for she's just too good to miss out on.
[please refer to the links at the bottom for more background. also thanks to mink1981@Jpopmusic for many of the songs provided here.]

Well well well. Glad to see a Kanon thread finally here I've grown to love Kanon's soaring vocals. Remind me of some European opera vocalists. I do hope it will manage to attract new fans |

Update: I added samples from [Hymn of Grace] and [Sanctuary]. I also incorporated a few elements from your thread at Jpopmusic Rinoa if you don't mind. I too hope this thread grabs some attention. |

I updated the links so the songs should play fine now.
I'd also like to inform those who are requesting full album uploads that the purpose of this thread is to introduce/explore this underrated artist and is NOT meant to provide incessant downloads. If you want her full albums I suggest following the appropriate Channel-Ai blog reviews to the YesAsia links provided. Thank you. |

Right now Kanon is recording music in the studio. According to her blog she's going to release an album by the end of the year. Awesome no? |

| -sniffle- Why are so many good artists underappreciated? I've only heard a handful of her songs, but her voice is soooo amazing. I hope her next project will do better. What is she doing anyway? |

Yikes it took me a bit to find this thread.
Kanon has a new song out that featured in an anime that currently airing for the spring season of animes.
I'll have to come back later to talk more about that.
For now, someone did upload the performance she did on J-Melo (which wasn't too long ago)

Yay! for the interview being in English (because I doubt people would have subbed it). I'm glad I could understand what was being said instead of grasping at my limited Japanese vocabulary ... |

Wow! Thank you so much for the interview! That was really cool!
And I never realized you pronounced her name like that...hmm.
So what's all this about a new song for an anime? -curious- |

I wasn't sure if she was going ton release this song but it looks like she will on August 26th.
So Kanon is coming out with a mini-album for Saga~This is my road It shouldn't be too hard to find since it has an anime tie-in. Guin Saga isn't super popular but it does seem to be watched.
