hi everybody, i'm new here,
although ever since i've found this forum like 2 days ago, i've been browsing and enjoying many discussions here. i think i'll frequently visit this cool forum. so much nice topics, discussions, and also members Smile

so my first curious question is about Ai Otsuka's first music-career starting history.
meaning like how she first got into Avex ?
actually, even more before that, does anybody here know in greater details of how she can initially got into music, and getting 'discovered' by the "big guys" a.k.a label (ie: Avex) ?

I've browsed through wikipedia, but unfortunately, it even doesn't contain complete information on her early-life and early-music-starting career, although as a musician/songwriter myself, I'm very much curious as to how she started all of this (even Yui has a quite detailed account of her early life & how she first started into full-time music career in wikipedia!).

Hope i can get some answer on this one ^^
Thank you very much!

there is a lot of information here about her and her past, but not in the form of a biography. mostly from various things she has said in interviews.

here are links to some biographies that will answer a lot of your questions
there was once even a fake biography! you can still see it in the internet archive.

You can also find a bunch of interesting details about ai-chin in this Ai Fan Fundamentals thread. Most of the info there is pieced together through the countless interviews and tv shows ai-chin took part in.

About ai-chin's music career starting history, briefly put, she started writing songs at 15, then along the way formed an indie band, called Himawari, with a close friend and started producing music. Not much info on the band could be found except a version of sakuranbo(which can be found in this thread ) by them came around the internet somehow. Later somewhere around 2001, the band was disbanded, some say her partner found work, some say its due to the poor success of the band, but the claims didnt really have reliable sources though. Ai-chin then continued to pursue a solo career in music, it was her demo of daisuki dayo that she sent to Avex that got her into the music scene.

The song Himawari later came about as the B-side to her debut single, probably as a tribute to her band. Also can be noted that, cherish being the 2nd and sensu being the 4th song that she ever wrote, judging by the arrangement of both songs, it kind of hinted about the initial music direction that ai-chin had even before joining avex, imo.

Thought this might be interesting to some since some of it leads up to her music career. The Japanese wikipedia page has more accurate information from which has been collected over the years and from various interviews and portions of Ai's diary.

- Aside from having the qualifications of a kindergarten teacher, she also has the qualifications to become a welfare officer and a community nurse from the training she received in college.
- Other than wanting to be a ballerina as a child, Ai wanted to be a manga artist, swimmer, and a swim teacher. This information comes from an essay/comic book that Ai made as a student called "The Dreams I Want To See". (I have a picture of this essay that I bought from a Yahoo Japan Auction, but it'll take me awhile to find it again.)
- Ai decided when she was 18 that she would leave Osaka to pursue a music career.
- As a child, she was very much a tomboy and enjoyed painting when she was six.
- SMILY and Planetarium have been thought to be plagiarized, but Ai denied it.
- The 'leaked' version of Sakuranbo by HimawaRI was published for free on the Internet.

wow, reading all of this seriously made me thinking,
isn't it amazing of how she's turning pretty much radically from her initial dreams?
I found it kinda funny of how she used to dream to become a manga artist, swimmer, a swim teacher, and also, that she excelled in mathematics and science , but NOW she's becoming sooo different away from all her dreams : a singer-songwriter , a musician Smile
I guess she probably just never thought of how talented she is in music, back at those childhood times, ne? Smile
