^ I would highly recommend it if you are a Aoi Miyazaki fan or a "junai" (pure love) fan.
If you've ever watched Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu you will love this film since it too is based on a book by the same author of Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu (that being Takuji Ichikawa) as well. Aio Miyazaki and Tamaki Hiroshi put on an excellent performance and the move was executed quite well.
To be fair, I am a bit biased since it is my favorite film but I'd give it a shot. |

I strongly recommend Gokusen series. I really love this series because I learned a lot of moral from this series. Another reason would be because I am still a student, so this series gave me encouragement. |

Great choices akuma_tsubasa. I really like Meiko Kaji, actress from the 1970's, pick up any movie you see from her. Other good movies:
9 Souls
Poppoya
Who's Camus anyway
Versus
Install
Ping Pong
Taste of Tea
there are just so many! |

I have to agree...that movie made me bawl like a baby
I would suggest Koizora ... especially if you like an angsty love story. Also, L -Change the World- ... I don't like DEATH NOTE a lot but that movie was great. Tada, Kimi wo Aishiteru as well...I really love melodramas |

su-ki-da
Remember that these movies are top notch *arthouse* movies, so some people might not like it. But when you love cinema, you really won't regret seeing these films
su-ki-da is a wonderful movie. the acting was superbly done by all the actors. but i can easily see how many people may not like it or be touched by it. it's a very slow movie and has a certain atmosphere...i liked it though. regarding the movie: su-ki-da. haha
also...no one has mentioned Love Letter...it's a very old movie that was made back in 1995. i feel like it's one of those under the radar movies but is very influential. this movie has been referenced a lot in asian popular culture, and i feel like i should've taken notice of it before now but i haven't. it's referenced in Guang Liang's Tong Hua and in an episode from the K-drama 9 End 2 Outs, but i'm positive it's been referenced in many other shows/movies...alas, i still haven't seen it yet. someday. |

You are so right about Love Letter, can't believe I forgot to mention it, don't be put off by the title, it's really not a tear jerker except for the last minute when it's sort of a smily tear jerking scene, highly recommended, Su ki da was good, but this is so much better. |

Oh yea Love Letter is a fantastic movie. Actually I didn't tear up at the end, I was smiled for sure. I did tear up when she was shouting out to the mountains because I felt I could relate on a different level
I think I wrote about it HERE.
The OST is really good if you enjoy classical music and Shunji Iwai is a fabulous director. I still need to watch April Story as well as Swallowtail Butterfly. |

That review was quite good, do you have your own site for more? Another movie he did which was really good was Hana and Alice, he's been quiet since then(I think). |

I just watched a movie called Kimi ni Shika Kikoenai (No one but you can hear me) and it's awesome. Super awesome. It instantly went up to my top 3 movies. It has a wonderful concept. I hiiiiighly suggest (command, even ) that you guys watch it. You WILL like it, and if you don't like it, you'll be able to appreciate it..and if you don't appreciate it then something's wrong..hah.
You can watch it on veoh.
Also, ICHI with Ayase Haruka is pretty good. The guy from GO! and the guy from Ima Ai ni Yukimasu (movie) are in it as well. It could have been better, really, but it's enjoyable. |

Recent movie I just watched was Shinjuku Incident (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinjuku_Incident)
Although it's not exactly a Japanese movie, but it has quite a number of cast members from Japan (Naoto Takenaka, Masaya Kato)as well as Jackie Chan. It's about illegal Chinese immigrants living in Japan who started to learn the Yakuza way and stuff happens.
It's a movie where Jackie Chan isn't a good fighter, so it's actually worth watching....well..for those that like action movies. Do note, this movie had a couple hands cut off and some throat slitting |
