I love this movie!
But it is definitely one you have to be in just the right mood to watch and really enjoy.
The pacing is very deliberate and at first one could call the film 'quiet'. But the messages concerning neverending love, like yuko said, truly resonate with the viewer--possibly more after watching, in thinking back to the images and tragedies of each story.
[I'll let yuko get into descriptions of the stories, if she wants, since it is her thread .]
Besides the moving nature of the tales (be fore-warned: this is not a "happy" movie--be prepared to cry), what it'll definitely be remembered for is the startling and stunning use of color to support emotions, themes and connections. Think Jet Li's Hero in smaller, more 'art-sy' doses.
I definitely recommend this film, but again, just relax a bit first and let it all wash over you. Slowly drink in what's there and remember/ruminate on your own loves and losses. |

This movie is very good and interesting, the 3 love stories are very well made, but very tragic and sad. My favorite story is with the j-pop star (Fukada) and her fan, you can see what things can somebody do in the name of love.
Yuko congratulations for your prefect purhase, and if some miracle occure and you get the Kitano autograph on that DVD, it will be priceless |

the first time i watched this film i wasn't really ready for it. i'd got too used to watching Korean romances and so the metaphors and imagary of Dolls kind of knocked me for six.
i went back to watch it a second time and really took it all in. it's the kind of film you absorb. in a way the stories aren't really needed for the film to make any sense, it's just like one big visual poem. that's the way i like to describe it anyway
i find myself going back and watching the segment where Sawako is playing with that pink blowy ball toy thingy. i find it mesmerising. |

Yes, everyone is right about it being an interesting film, it is, but a warning, don't watch it if you're the least bit tired, it is quite slow in parts, especially Miho Kanno's segments. Kyoko's segment about being an Idol was very good, hate to admit it, but that song she sang was just so catchy it made me want to hear more J-Pop, plus she looks better than she ever has in the movie! Recommended to watch, just watch it when you're wide awake. |
