| Oh gosh, this song grew on me pretty fast, and I knew it sounded sad, but I had no idea it was so dark. |

It somehow reminds me of The Little Mermaid (the original, darker, version)... the shards of glass, the concept of "becoming human". Plus I thought Ningyou mean mermaid for some reason when I first saw it lol. Anyway, thanks bunches for the lovely translation. It's a great song. |

Ningyo does mean a mermaid in japanese, but Ningyou means a doll.
That's probably why you thought it meant "mermaid",lol.
I really love this song because it's so deep!
I wish she had more songs like this, lol. |

I listened this song over again.
I felt it is too sad song.
I write my feeling about this song.
About the mean of "Ningyou"
I think meny means of this term.
example:
1. cute sweet lovely ("Ningyou no youni kawaii" in Japan)
2. A figure having jointed parts animated from above by strings or wires; a marionette.
Ai-chin is a member of avex (marionette of avex).
(But once, She released "pocket" ,ignored avex's plan...)
3. Ningyou = Guuzou :
"Guuzou"(japanese) means idol.
One of the means of idol(Aidoru) is "Cute" young singer (lady, especially).
In Japan, The most favorite of Ai-chin's songs is SAKURANBO .
So Ai-chin is regarded as "young lady singer ,singing very cute song (stereotype)"...
That is,
Ningyou = Ai Otsuka (herself)
This song is "a love letter addressed to herself".
Probably,"the city" in this song is Tokyo , because she works in Tokyo far away from Osaka(her's hometown).
"I want to become human"
I felt this sentence is expressed about her freedom (of work ,song etc).
By the way ,her next single song is "bye bye".
and Her ambition in 2009 is "preparation of 2010"
That is mean...
>To Rodri
I think she use man of this song as mean of "another (a stereotype in Japan)" , against woman( "herself (her ideal)"). |

Such a beautiful song with beautiful and sad lyrics. I think it's Ai's saddest song.
I am not a Japanese speaker, but I think that this translation may have some mistakes.
"tomodachi ga hoshikute atashi ha YES dake de ' I don't know the sencence's meaning, but for me, it looks like the word "Yes" should be there, because it's the only word that comes in english in those lyrics. Maybe it's something like "Because I wanted friends, I (said) only Yes". The "said" is obvious, although I can't find it in the lyrics.
Morover, I find the romaji of "itami mo kodoku mo dare hitori tasukete kurenai " a bit wierd. In the Japanese text, there is the Kanji of 人 alone, without the "ri" in hiragana, so it should me something like "dare hito ni tasukete", which makes the sentence a lot clearer. (Hitori/ alone doesn't go good with the sentence, huh? XD)
Everything I have just written might be a huge mistake, so please fix me if I'm wrong.
I have to say that the translation really helped me understand the song. I even talked about it with my mom and we tried to the meaning of this songt....~Hahaha
Thanks for doing all this hard work^__^ |

^ Sorry for not getting back to you sooner so I don't know if you'll ever get this but...
No, I don't believe that there is a mistake in the translation. It's just not translated literally word for word. I tried to explain it in a way to make the meaning clear. I had the same rigid before where you must keep the translation as literal as possible but I'm over that now
Also, regarding the 'hitori', 一人 is how the kanji is written. You might've gotten confused because 人 is usually the one pronounced as 'hito' but the 'hito' is now pronounced by the 一. You'll find that's the case for several other words too eg 一晩 (hito ban)、 一思い (hito omoi)
Hope that clarifies everything for you! |
