Wow, it's nice to know other's stories.
My story or should I say ADDICTION started with BOA. My brother took Japanese language class at school... so he taught me now and then. He was a computer guy.. downloaded lots, listened to Japanese music, and he got me hooked on a bit. Though I enjoyed the music and such, I never really bothered to know more.
Then one evening........my brother was watching a music video he just downloaded. I came across it.. watched it with amazement and fell in love. Like love at first sight. It was BoA!! And it was the Japanese version of ID; Peace B. I was amazed at her dancing skills and age. I dance myself so I was inspired I guess to dance even more!!! After that, I researched about her... and although she's Korean... I still love Japanese music and BoA!!
Yup, that's my story!!

All right, you're getting the COMPLETE story... (I apologize for the length...)

Around Christmas break of 2002 ( Surprised I had no idea it was that long ago...), I was flipping through the channels on TV and I randomly turned on the International Channel. I never really watched it before, and I had always had this dormant curiosity about foreign things, especially Asian things. At the time a show called "Revolution" was playing and I saw some song and thought, "Wow, so this is what Japanese music is like." I don't know why I thought it was Japanese, but I figured out that it was Korean when the host called someone "the Korean Mariah Carey". The only thing besides that that I remember from that night is that they played the music video "Fly to the Sky" by the group of the same name. I started watching the show every week and it didn't take me long to discover that there was another show about Korean music airing on Mondays. I didn't necessarily like any of it, but I just kept watching because I thought it was cool. One day, they played a music video called "Answer The Phone" by Mina and after hearing it a few times I really liked it. Whenever it came on the show, I would turn up the volume really loud (even though it was normally 10:30 pm and my mom was sleeping) and take in every second of it. After a while, I grew tired of hoping it would come on TV or somehow I'd remember the melody the next morning at school to make my day brighter, so I ran a Google search of how to buy Korean CDs. About 6 months after I had originally seen that episode of "Revolution", I ordered 3 CDS off of YesAsia: Mina's "Rendezvous", Baby VOX's "Devotion" and t's "Best" (because I also liked some of their songs). When my CDs came, I called my friend Aki over and we were going to hit each other with sticks outside or something dumb like that, and I was listening to Baby VOX on my CD player, and I said, "Hold on, I want to listen to my favorite song." I explained about it, she listened to it, and said, "Wow, this is pretty cool." A month later, I bought 4 more CDs, the next month, I bought 5, and so on and so forth (although the number of CDs I buy today doesn't increase by one for each order Laughing ). My library kept expanding and I quickly lost interest in American music. It didn't take much time for me to become "that girl who listens to Chinese music" at my school. Blank stare

By my 4th order at YesAsia, I was already becoming a rabid BoA fan. Next came Utada Hikaru, ZONE, Mika Nakashima, etc. I got into Utada by word of mouth and basically all of my other CD purchases depended on what music videos I saw on TV (because "PopJapan.TV" started airing and "Revolution" started introducing J-Pop and showed one Jay Chou MV and called it a C-Pop line-up Blank stare ). When the International Channel became "AZN TV" in June this year, they moved their programming schedule around to show some other bullcrap shows that no one watches. That means that the shows I used to watch are shown at ridiculous times of the day, i.e. 3 am on a weekday. Yeah, that really pissed me off. That means that my only source of Asian music is the internet. Now I think I'm slowly losing touch with the K-Pop world by shifting my attention to Japanese artists like Ai and my favorite Korean artists, like t, Baby VOX and Jo Sung Mo are not doing much, breaking up, or have disappeared all together. I don't really have a way to introduce myself to new Korean artists because I really don't know where to start. Shocked I suppose that's ok, though. Confused

Ahaha, I apologize if that went horribly off-topic. Laughing

For me its games... o.o;

I first learned about Ayu from a PS game called Thousand Arms... I think that was back when she wasnt as popular. But yeahThat was the first time when I really got hooked on to Japanese music.
Soon after I found Ayu I was exposed to Sentimental Bus and Hysteric Blue from Percussion Freak/Drum Mania And learned about the hyperness of some of the Japanese music...
Those two were also two of my favorites... to bad they no longer exist... Crying

Morning Musume "Love Revolution 21" PV was how it started for me. Those black vinyl outfits are so hot!

Then I found Miki Fujimoto. Cutest chick I've ever seen -- although Ai Otsuka is pretty damn cute too. (By the way, I did an illustration of Miki Fujimoto a couple months ago.)

So I turned into a Mo-ota, and I started looking for Miki Fujimoto and Momusu PVs, TV shows, etc.

Eventually I started watching Yaguchi Hitori (Mari Yaguchi's new show), and that's where I saw a clip of Neko Ni Fuusen. Ever since then I've been a big Ai Otsuka fan. Ai's music is by far my favorite of all the Jpop I've heard so far.

I 'think' it was when a Puffy's Boogie Woogie No.5 was played on a show called Saiko Exciting which was UK televisions one and only 'real' attempt at a Japanese culture show.... unfortunately it didn't last very long Sad
Anyway, I ordered Puffy's 'Spike' and then 'Nice' and really enjoyed them.

Then, through FFX-2 I heard Koda Kumi's Real Emotion and started to get interested as to what else is on offer and gradually I'm finding more and more great Asian music (go Ai Boogie ).

All this is really only possible because of the internet, aside from the show I mention above there is never, ever any Jpop played in the UK... in fact you don't really hear any asian music at all!
Interestingly Hikaru Utada is releasing her first single in the UK at the end of this month so I'm interested to see how that goes. The only other Japanese artist I can remember releasing anything in the uk is Cornelius.

the first time i heard jpop was at my uncle's place, he's a big ayu fan
but what got me addicted to it was ai ^^
the first song i heard by her was sakuranbo, which i couldn't get of the repeat
i then decided to go and search for jpop here in the stores only to find out you won't get any here in holland -.-'
so the only resource i have for jpop is the internet, i hope in the future i'll be able to buy cd's here, but if it's up to me i'm out of this country anyway in a few years...so i'll just move to japan and buy everything there =P

My fren introduced me First Love from Utada Hikaru when i was 17...
That was the first Jap song i heard ever...
before that Utada already famous that time.
Then accidentally i downloaded BoA's Dream come true, then only i know BoA... and then the others like Mika, Ai, Hitomi...
Now for 4 years i've listen to jpop, more than 20 Cds i've collected, i'm goin for more!

Other than Jpop, Kpop, i listen to heavy western music such as Black Metal and Gothic Metal, which r satanic. And also Nu metal and thrash metal...
somehow i found a balance for myself thru jpop. It saves me.
