We have one for movies, but not for anime series or movies. I can always go and read a review somewhere, but I like to hear how my peers like or dislike things. Thought it would be helpful to have a place to ask for an opinion or let others know if you've discovered a really new and good anime. To start off, just bought 2 series this week, don't know whether to watch them first or something else, bought them because the price was too cheap to pass up. First series is Samurai Sevem, some of the reviews I read only gave it a so-so rating, anyone else have an opinion? The other was Blue Seed, seen it around for a couple of years, finally bought it, not sure what it's about, sometimes you get pleasantly surpised. |

I know, there are too many and once you start watching one, you have to give up a lot of time to finish it. Started Blue Seed last night, so far it's been good, an older one, think from 1995, only problem is it's 26 episodes! But the price was so cheap, had to get it. |

^^ I have been wanting to see it for a while, guess I should order it, never at the store anymore, . I've read the novels, not the manga, looks really, really good. Off work tomorrow, can stay up late so about time to watch one of my favorite movies, Cowboy Bebop: Knockin on heaven's door...such a great movie! |

Shoujo anime anyone?
Ouran High School Host Club (OHSHC)
Skip Beat!
Vampire Knight
Gakuen Alice
Lovely Complex
La Corda D'Oro
and etc...
If you like classical music, try La Corda D'Oro. It's about a girl gaining some magical powers from a fairy to play violin, and she entered the school's music competition. Time passes by and she sees her competitors' passion and love for music, she felt guilty to deceive them, and many things happened. I love the pieces they chose, like Ave Maria, etc.
If you love hilarious anime, try OHSHC, Skip Beat!, Lovely Complex. They're really good for laughing though the plots are totally different from each other. Lovely Complex focuses mainly on love between a very tall girl, and a very short guy (both of them have height complex XD). I think it is very easy to understand the girl's feelings and thus easy to feel for this anime. I've even cried several times when watching. (There's a drama adaptation of this manga and I feel that the actress totally spoiled it =x) Skip Beat! does not only focus on romance, but also the girl's career as an actress. She was betrayed by her boyfriend (who is in the showbiz) and to get revenge, she entered the showbiz industry too. It is really interesting to see the plot develops. For OHSHC, it is about some guys in a rich school setting up a host club to entertain girls, and earn profit off them. One day a very poor scholarship student entered their room accidentally and they mistook her as a guy, and made her work for the club to pay off her debt (because she broke an expensive vase). Very entertaining to see their train of thoughts. Really silly, but meaningful at some episodes.
I've also watched some Shounen anime like Toradora, Karin (Chibi Vampire) and currently watching Code Geass. =] |

Didn't know Karin was also Chibi, have most of the mangas. Haven't seen too many Shojo anime, though in my manga collection probably have more of that genre than anything else. Do have Fruits Basket and His and Her circumstances, will check out a few of yours, few others have also mentioned Lovely Complex. |

Oh where to begin ... well there's this anime blog that I frequent for anime episode summaries/screencaps since I don't have as much time now to check out all animes. It's called Random Curiosity
http://randomc.animeblogger.net/
I'm probably gonna miss some animes but here's the ones I like off the top of my head
- Card Captor Sakura (and NO not the horrible censored dubbed version but it is quite a girly anime)
- Pretear (another girly anime, most girls I recommend it to like it but dunno about guys)
- Cowboy Bebop (my personal fav since they did some parodies/references well ... when there is comedy, it is well done ... music is out of this world because Yoko Kanno is amazing, I personally think the OSTs for this anime is some of her best compositions)
- Full Metal Alchemist (good mix of action and comedy and majority of the time the animation quality is consistent)
- Ouran High School (great comedy/shojo anime, good voice acting too)
- Azumanga Daioh (most random ridiculously funny anime I know of, not even Ouran can top it in terms of comedy. Actually, there is one other anime that can compete but I haven't watched it so therefore I can't recommend it ... yet)
- Blood+ (story is great, animation isn't always consistent but compared to most animes out there it does have a higher quality of animation for majority of the series)
- Death Note (I like the first half of the series more because of the story but it's good overall)
- Kara no Kyokai (I think the story is a bit creepy at least from the first 3 I've seen ... I believe there is 7 in total. Regardless, animation, music and voice acting is out of this world)
I recommend the following because of beautiful animation and most of them have fabulous anime music to go with it ...
- AIR (watch the KyoAni version ... Kyoto Anime is an animation studio ... story may be odd if you don't look at it in a philosophical sense in terms of the overall story especially the ending ... this anime made me cry twice)
- Kanon (KyoAni version again ...such a harem anime but I like it even though I'm a girl because of the main story between the two main characters, there's some really good side stories too though that doesn't mean I like all of them)
- Spirited Away (everything is good, I can't think of a thing to complain about)
- Laputa Castle in the Sky (consider when this is produced, animation is spectacular back in it's time ... most guys I know like the story too)
this is kind of a sub category of beautiful animation because I worship the ground Makoto Shinkai walks on ... no I am not crazy. His first anime ... he did EVERYTHING from a Mac computer!! ... animation, music (he had help from a friend) and voice acting too (if I remember right his wife did the female voice, but the most common version out there uses professional voice actors) ... ANYWAYS ... I recommend all his animes
- 5 Centimeters Per Second (it's not an anime I'd recommend to everyone story wise ... because the storyline is more appealing for the sentimental and it can move quite slowly)
- Voices of a Distant Star (This is more of an anime short but lengthy enough to have a story. Plus this is the one where everything was done on a Mac)
- The Place Promised in Our Early Days (animation is out of this world)
If you like Mecha series, I'd look into various Gundam series and Macross series. And for those that like classics/old school and mecha ... I'd recommend Patlabor. |

If you want to try a comedy you can watch Gintama ..It's also one of my favorites.
I also love Fullmetal Alchemist.
Vampire Knight is very good, but the manga is better, It's a shojo but it has blood and action..so I love it |

Isn't that illegal?
Funny enough for me personally if there is an Australian release I will always buy the anime. But then if there is no Aussie release and I can't find them in the store I download them ... *cough* Sailor moon and Card Captor Sakura *cough*
Anyway my number #1 recommendation is Ranma 1/2, if you haven't watched it I don't know what your doing, it is an absolute classic. Way better than anything I've seen including Azumanga Daioh ... watch it
I'd recommend Azumanga Daioh as well but everyone here seems to have already watched it.
For anyone who is a fan of Sailor moon or CCS, or have some liking of classical music and fairy tales, you must watch Princess Tutu, enough said
Noir is also awesome, and features one of the best soundtracks eva
For mecha series Macross, Macross Plus are the best, then Full Metal Panic (first season only) and Gundam Seed. Oops forgot Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Also, Last Exile, Fushigi Yuugi, Dragonball, Trigun worth mentioning
Wow that was a lot, and I'm probably forgetting many |

I'm like you, only buy the DVDs, have never watched any on line, guess I'm strange in that regard...and perhaps a few others. Have quite a few of the Ranma mangas, plus acouple of the movies, the movies are quite good. One series I really, really want to finish seeing is Serial Experiment: Lain, have the 1st DVD, has 4 episodes, the box set whwn it was available was just too expensive, but those four episodes were among the best I've ever seen, hard to describe it, very dark and eerie, guess now my next mission is to find the rest of the episodes! |

For Ranma, the first two TV seasons are the best, and the OAV's are also really good. I've seen Lain before, though it didn't stand out for me that much, in fact I'm struggling to even remember what happened in it Has anyone here seen The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, I've heard a lot about it and it seems interesting, it would be good to know if anyone thought it was good? |

Oh I knew I would forget a ton animes.
I grew up watching Ranma 1/2/reading the mangas. And I can't believe I forgot Full Metal Panic. Both seasons of FMP were good. And Full Metal Panic Fumoffu was quite hilarious.
if you want to get into really old school animes there's also Doraemon and Dr. Slump (the artist behind Dr. Slump does art for Dragonball and Chrono Trigger and I think Blue Dragon as well) but they're kind of aimed at a younger crowd |
