Happy new year from Osaka! I'm a new comer and this is the very first post so excuse me if I can't make it.
Although this thread seems to have been hibernating, "Kimi Ni Kaeru" was included on Ai's 'almost-compilation' album "LOVE IS BEST," so I hope its beautiful-but-obscure lyrics will be discussed once again. (This one is really my fave!)
As somebody may have written somewhere before, Ai sometimes uses puns in her lyrics.
Some fans don't believe "kaeru" means "frog," but when she sings the last line 'Kimi ga kureta kaeru," it sure also means "a frog you gave me." (Of course, it must be a puppet frog as a present, not a real one, though. Ai may have gotten a puppet frog from someone and it inspired her to write it. Oh, don't ask me who.)
Yes, it's a funny and strange ending, but remember this song starts as overcoming lovers waking up and feeling ice's melting/bud's sending out, just like frogs awake from hibernation. Her great writing technique or just an accidental nature? I don't know.
Anyway, the song is about making up, and I want to say it is her version of the Beatles' "Here Comes The Sun" with a twist.
Most of her words are sensuous rather than logical. Many sentences lose the subject so lyrics-readers (including me) don't understand and wonder who-said/did-what, but it's ok. Listeners will have their own stories. After all, the song itself matters, doesn't it? |

Welcome to the forum Tosh. What about introducing yourself in the Newbie-Section? You can give us more details about yourself there .
Do you watched Ai's concerts? Sometimes she wears a little puppet frog on her belt! It reminds me of the lyrics from "Kimi ni Kaeru." ... |

Maybe that's the puppet frog given by this someone?
Also on CDTV SP Premier Live 2007 → 2008, she brought a puppet frog to attach to the mic. |

Thanks for the comments, Crystallas and chokokokoa.
And, no, I had no chance to see her live.
I've got to check out YouTube later. Thanks again, chokokokoa.
Below is my attempt of English translation of the song.
I may be wrong about 'who did/said it' in the lyrics because Ai omitted the subjects, plus I must say I added my imagination to some lines that don't make sense.
Any comment will be welcomed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
We woke up and sights in front of us began to move
You and me, our eyes movement patterned the same
We felt the smell of new buds
It ends, and it begins, and then again it gets back
Hearts that are shut as the snow accumulates
But someday they will melt with the warmth of the sun
I can say "We can make it now"
And someday missing kisses from me are gonna come back to you
Our temperature while we are not touching, cold tiptoes
Our skin movement patterned the same
Let our eyes open new
One season, again it gets back
The last snowfall is waving goodbye
It's shining as if it says "Everything's all right"
I can say "We can make it now"
And someday missing kisses from me are gonna come back to you
Hearts that are shut as the snow accumulates
But someday they will melt with the warmth of the sun
I cay say "we can make it now"
And someday missing kisses from me are gonna come back to you
Now I will watch our hearts and souls
You've given me a single flower, and a 'kaeru' |

1 day before, on 58th Kouhaku when she also sang CHU-LIP, she wore that frog puppet as ring on her left hand. |

I can't find both of them, but thanks anyway, chokokokoa.
I'll keep on searching.
By the way, I heard 'Kimi ni Kaeru' at a restaurant last night. What an accident!!! |

Wow, thank you for the links! (And also thanks to guys who uploaded them!)
I really enjoyed the 'omedetai' (= auspicious) performances.
I laughed in spite of myself when I saw Ken Kawai holding a 'tai' (= sea bream) as if it's jumping around.
I'm pretty sure the puppet frog with a crown was designed by Ai herself. Interestingly, after singing "Pocket", she took it out and attached it to her microphone. Yea, I understand frog is suitable for tulip, not for "Pocket." |
