That was the first Jap song i heard ever...
before that Utada already famous that time.
ME TOO!
When I was 15, the Japanese drama "魔女の条件" was very very popular in my country.
Almost every teenager was talking about it.
Naturally, the theme song "First Love" could be heard everywhere, and Utada Hikaru was the first Japanese singer I knew.
Then, I started to listen to different styles of Japanese songs and watch many Japanese dramas.
Within so many singers and actors, only Ai makes me really addicted.
That's why I am here now.

I first got into Japanese culture through Anime, like a lot of people here. I then wanted to know everything I could about it! I started listening to Japanese radio stations on the internet. The first j-pop song that I heard was "Time Machine" by Chara. I loved it! I wanted more! So I started talking about Chara to some of my online friends who were also into Anime and the like and got introduced to Ayu and her song "Evolution". Brilliant, brilliant song! I was hooked from then on! |

i first started to know J-pop through my brother, who was already a die-hard J-pop fan. then, i got to know about SPEED and it started my whole craze about J-pop ever since. i was really attracted to them after watching the Long Way Home PV, which was a bit late since they were disbanding, but nonetheless i tried all means to 'go back' and know everything about them.
since SPEED, i listen to other Avex artistes (like Ayumi, Namie, ELT, DAI etc) and Johnnies (like Kinki Kids, V6, SMAP etc). another fan-crazed period of mine that follows is my love for MM and some H!P solo artistes. then i got to know about Ai and BANG! i really like her songs, especially ballads!!!
now, i just listen to whatever J-pop artistes i can find cos i want to know more about as many artistes as possible ~! |

I got into J-POP shortly after moving here with the military. I got this satellite dish here, and there are 4 music channels. Every Sunday there is a Top 100 countdown, and I always watch it. That is how I know so much about J-POP. I havent even met a Japanese that knew as much as me. I think it is just so great, but no one really listens to it. Even here in Japan, they are too obsessed the the crap that we spit out in the US. But I dont want it to get popular, especially in the US, because then it will turn to crap like everything else that gets popular.
I have this neat trick that I do with the music. I have a hard drive recorder, so I record the Top 100 every week onto the HDR, then I tranfer the songs that I like to VHS, then I hook that to the computer to make MP3s, then I burn to disk. So far I have 23 full CDs of my favorite J-POP.
I like all kinds of this stuff. It is much different than the US stuff. I feel a little silly being a guy who likes Ootsuka Ai, but oh well. I also like Ketsumeishi, ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, Taiyouzoku, Sanpomasutaa, L'Arc~en~Ciel, Japaharinetto, and so many more that I can never recall them all. I like punk from the US, so I like the Japanese versions and fusions of punk. I hate American hip-hop, but I really like the Japanese version. I dont like it when it sounds very much like the US version. I like the versions like Ketsumeishi and FLOW and so forth. Like a rap, hip-hop, rock, punk or 2 or so of the above fusion. And funny enough I like Ootsuka Ai, although I would loath her American counterpart. Japanese is funny that way for me. It is such a complex language to decipher, espcially in song that what might be for a Japanese boring and silly is very interesting and creative to me. Plus, when you dont know the words, you can appreciate the music in a different way. I dont like a lot of US music because of the words; they are meaningless. I like meaning in music.
Anyway, I would love to chat about J-POP. I know no one up here in Misawa that is all that in to it. And I am obsessed with it. |

if i have to blame someone for getting me to listen to j-pop it'd have to be my brother. i remember asking him to put on headphones when he was listening to j-pop on the computer so i didn't have to hear it. i thought it was kinda funny, but too weird (i mean, he listened mostly to mini moni and UNDER17 and other childy stuff). after a while of watching anime i got a bit more used to the japanese style of music. but i still didn't really listen to it yet.
the first japanese song i could say i liked was W's "shiroi iro wa koibito no iro". i sat and watched the PV and i thought it was really beautiful (i still think that). so i listened to that song sometimes, but i didn't really explore more. i listened to some anime songs too after that, like TiA's "ryuusei" and ASIAN KUNG FU GENERATION's "haruka kanata". the first song i learned all the lyrics from was hikki's "hikari" after watching the kingdom hearts intro. i loved that song. but i didn't really care about who sang what at that time, i tagged all my songs from the different animes or games i got them from (been listening to nobuo uematsu and yasunori matsuda for a looooong time too).
so, last summer i just copied most of my brother's music that interested me and i ended up almost constantly listening to morning musume for a long while. and i started to actually care who the artists were. so i listened quite much to W and miki fujimoto too. and then i saw the intro to kingdom hearts 2 and loved it. and "passion" became one of my all time favourite songs, and after that a month or two of constantly listening to hikki started. and then i started to listen to ai-chin, and i did that for a long time too. but then i discovered YUI and i was obsessed with her for a while. and after that it was hitomi takahashi and then aya matsuura. later i found out about yuna ito and ayaka and younha and have listened quite much to them too (like, too much at the time...). but now i think i have a nice balance. though i'm mostly into aya matsuura for the time being.
i think i'm one of those that listen too much to an artist so i become tired of them..... but i'm not too obsessed now. |

For a while I knew many of my friends were anime people who listened to some Japanese music in addition to their English music. Well one winter break I spent a day working alongside two of them, and the CDs they had were heavily J-Pop influenced. Particularly one song interested me very much because it sounded real nice. A few weeks later I tracked down the song and asked my friend to send it to me. It was "Hikari e" by The Babystars. Following this song I slowly brought East Asian music into my world. (because of BoA, i could not say "Japanese" music in that last sentence)
I began searching for other anime music and also starting listening to some of BoA's korean songs. (my friends are big BoA fans, but i could only appreciate a few of her works, even now I listen to a very small minority of her music) Anyway not watching any anime at all yet but being interested in the music the first one I looked up was one my friends mentioned a lot, FMA. With the site http://gendou.com/ I could listen to almost any anime song I pleased. (It has since been replaced by other more comprehensive sources) Nana Kitade became my first obsession following my FMA search, and soon I was listening to a few other random anime songs and began to watch anime that summer. The next fall I truly discovered Younha, who had been known to me ever since "Houkiboshi", and since then she has been reigning queen of my J-Pop music. Also at this time I began listening to music from other noteable anime artists or big artists, like AKFG, DAI, and UVERworld. This year my friend introduced me to Ai-chin through "Planetarium", and she's ascended my music ranks very rapidly. Also I've been listening to quite a bit of J-Drama influenced stuff like "Taiyou no Uta" and quite a few Remioromen things.
Currently my music is heavily dominated by female vocals. For whatever reason, but maybe because males seem largely to just do rock songs whereas females are more versatile and a single good female artist can span several different genres and do them all quite well. (Noteably Younha and Ai-chin, my two favorites) Furthermore I probably do not like rock music as much as pop or ballad tunes. Anyway this is pretty general since there are some ballad-like male songs that I have been listening to lately.
Nowadays Japanese music is the vast majority of my music, with a tiny bit of Korean and otherwise nothing else. It's a bit unusual for me to pick up a new artist. Usually it takes an anime/drama/friend recommendation to even give a different artist a chance. On the other hand though, I have some strange sense of pride avoiding most of the big mainstream artists. (Ayumi, Koda, Namie, Utada, and BoA etc...the last two I listen to but very very little) Anyway I am beginning to like Ami Suzuki and the next recommendation I am taking is Ayaka, so we'll see what happens. And I do favor listening to more artists so my music will be more diverse...problem is just getting me to know a different artist. |

| I started off with my step into BoA world! That was basically how I got into Jpop..though not instantly. I listened to BoA's songs first, like ALL of her songs only. Then for some reason (can't recall) I got more and more into Jpop! |

the first jpop song that i heard is First Love by Utada Hikaru. and i still remember the second one is M by Ayumi Hamasaki. i heard that song when i was child and give me a great influence. i felt there's something different in japanese song.
until now, i only hear jpop. almost never hear another song. my friend tell me to try another song, but who cares. i don't know what is trend, art, or whatever, but at least i know what i love. |

For me was SPEED, from their 3rd single onwards even after they disband, I still followed them all the way till 2003 when I stop idolizing them.. Since then was Ai-chin.. Till now is Ai-chin and elly(Imai Eriko) former SPEED member..
I do listen to other artists like Ayu, Namie, BoA, Koda, YUI, Aiuchi Rina(anyone know her? =S) Johnnys like V6, ARASHI, NewS and KAT-TUN... Others like w-inds, lead, Gackt etc.. I am very jpop..
Because of SPEED got me into the whole japanese thing.. learning the language and culture.. =) But now is Ai-chin my motivation.. =P |

momusu "Love Revolution 21". first time i saw momusu, and got hook instantly. all of the girl were very beautiful, especially for me is gouto maki 萌え!
魔女の条件. that was a very nostalgic film. but to be honest, i saw that film when i was child, so not so understood the plot yet still make a good feeling. Hikki "First Love" was very suit with this film. |

I was a casual Jpop listener when a few years back, when SPEED and Do As Infinity were around. I listened to English and Mandarin songs more.
Then came BoA and I started listening more of Jpop.
I had Ai-chin's albums but it wasn't until recently I got hooked onto them again.
Joining this forum, now the latest that I listen to would be YUI.
Still love Ai-chin lots though |

Like many, I got into J-pop world by listening to Hikki's First Love. Before that I listened to some J-artists such as Miki Imai (still love her songs) and Chage&Asuge, because my sister learned Japanese and loved listening to J-music. But I tended to listen more to English and Thai songs.
I completely entered the J-pop world about 2 years+ ago when I was bored to death by English and Thai songs. Now 90% of what I listen is J-music.

For me it is Younha. But Ai-chin is always my number 1. |
