Been slow around here lately.

I recently picked up a turntable off eBay and have been enjoying my LP collection again. Listening to bands from my yoot like Boston, Van Halen, Kansas, The Who...it brings back so many memories. I didn't grow up in the early 70's but we always hung out at a friends house during the summer. He lived in Georgia but would come out every Summer to visit. His uncle who was probably 19 or 20 at the time had a great LP collection of what is now classic rock. So we would shoot pool, play with toys or video games while listing to great classic rock on LP.

Hearing those occasional pops is like pressing the reset button on my memory. Everything is coming back like it was yesterday. I miss those days and I horribly miss my best friend with whom I shared so many hours listening to LP records.

question to the computer savvy peoples on here... :.

would changing a modem cause your internet speed to slow down, or would an older model one affect the speed? Confused cause since ive had my computer worked on my internet has slowed down. No now im connecting to the net at a lower bit-rate and, where i was managing to download at least 10 MB per hour before, im lucky if i get 4MB per hour now... hmm

It shouldn't. Usually slow dial up speed is because of noise. I would try cleaning the phone cord and jack with a spot of alcohol on a cue tip. Also try and use a short phone cord that is not coiled up. It is best if the cords, if they touch, do so at right angles and try to keep the phone cord away from other wires like the power cord. If you are using a splitter at the phone jack to share the jack with a telephone, try removing it temporarily and see if it improves. Also check to see if anyone has added a phone to the line or move one from one jack to another.

The type of files you download are already compressed, so I don't think is it any "web accelerator" component that is messed up. First impression is noise on the line. You can also try another POP (dial up number) at least temporarily and see if you suddenly see more speed. It could be the point of presence you are using has a temporary issue.

Other things are more technical. Make sure your port speed is set to 115.2K (but not connect only at that speed), hardware flow control, transmit (xmit) and receive buffers set to high, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity. These settings are found in the Control Panel under Modem.

thanks skee Smile

i untangled the cord and tried cleaning it and jack in the wall and the plugin on the back of the hard drive... and while i was cleaning the back of the hard drive, as desperate as i am to get my speed back, i had a redneck "ducktape and bondo" moment and decided to change from the jack from the LINE recepter to the PHONE recepter(computer guy said it was only for an extra phone but... :0 )... Laughing Laughing Laughing and voila! speed is back (for the moment, anyways) Shocked Shocked Shocked almost the same as it was before Confused

ill give the different number a try sometime... but im not to big on that because the number i use is the only non-long-distance pop available... hmm mom isnt too happy about using another one... ill save that as a last resort. Smile

not sure about the tech stuff... i tried looking that up but all i found was something called Phone and Modem and all it let me set was my area code... hmm

~~~~~~~~~~
ooh and coolies on the turntable! i love the scratchy ness of LPs Love i miss listening to our old records but .. i kinda broke the needle in our player when i was younger Embarassed
@Ashley: Oh no, I hope your computer woes improve Surprised Unfortunately, I don't have any advice but follow skee's and just give'er Tongue
@Skee: That sounds like lots of fun Smile We don't even have a record player, but my dad insists on collecting the Beatles LPs ..... Sneeze
@Rodri: Good luck in school Giggle Don't flunk out, study hard...etc, all that stuff a parent would say Tongue
As for me...school comes back in September. I must say I'm quite prepared for it. Although as an added measure, my parents took us on vacation to New Hampshire to buy some last-minute stuff (ahem clothes Love). Can you believe there's no tax in this state? $10.99 is really $10.99! Surprised
