Here's a few step of doing your own video encoding:
- Get K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and install all the decoder and encoder
- Download VirtualDub, preferably with MPEG2 support
- Open the video you want to recompress using VirtualDub, pick "Fast recompress" and select the appropriate encoder under "Compression"
- Use "Configure" if you wanna further tweak the encoding settings
Haha, that's about it. Good luck! |

alternatively, you could use the all singing all dancing WME
1. get the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack
2. go here and download Windows Media Encoder.
3. Install the K-Lite pack by either choosing what you want or making sure you get all the recommended items under the "Encoder" option by making sure they're all selected apart from the others that you want, and then install
Remember when installing the codec pack that more than one multimedia stream switcher will usually confuse your computer.
Once you've installed WME ... open it
1. Cancel the wizard. Click on Properties.
2. Under source/input, you can select the source. this is where the codec pack comes in handy, whatever the codec pack can read, WME will be able to work with. note: WME also allows multiple sources, so you can encode one file and roll over to a different source. usefull for when you want to join videos.
3. specify the output. uncheck the server port option and click on the save to disk option.
4. specify the compression. use the windows streaming setting for fastest and easiest encoding. click edit ender the compression tab to make your own encoding selections
5. click on Encode.
6. have a cup of tea.
WME is pretty easy to use so play around with it. it's especially good for extracting sound from videos. under source, just uncheck video and it will only encode the audio to wma.
oh yeah, forgot to mention, WME converts anything and everything to WMA and WMV
also, if you want the best mp3 - wav - mp3 converter... get MPEGSuite. It's the fastest. Best for changing bitrates of mp3s...
hope i helped.
