recently, Google's translation of Ai Otsuka's name in Japanese (大塚 愛) has been coming out as Ootsuka Megumi. is this a valid alternate translation of her Japanese name?
if not, then i wonder if it is some sort of Google bomb by some person/group to get the translation of her name changed. if this is the case, then the way to correct it would be to "vote" for an "Ai Otsuka" translation by hovering your mouse over Ootsuka Megumi and clicking on "Contribute a better translation:". if enough people do it then it should revert back to "Ai Otsuka". |

The kanji for 愛 is usable in many names, and it is pronounceable as 'めぐみ'. Comprehensive dictionary Denshi Jisho shows a list of probable pronunciation for the 'Ai' kanji:
Quote: Japanese names: あ、 あし、 え、 かな、 なる、 まな、 めぐ、 めぐみ、 よし
http://jisho.org/kanji/details/%E6%84%9B
So "Megumi" is possible, but less probable than "Ai". I wonder how and why "Megumi" shows up, though Never heard of any Otsuka Megumi's out there.... |

As I'm studying Japanese academically, I would not take my reference just from Denshi Jisho.
The kanji 愛 are pronounce as:
1. Ai (for on'yomi)
2. Ito * (for kun'yomi)
3. Me ** (for kun'yomi)
4. Mana *** (for kun'yomi)
5. U **** (for kun'yomi)
* The pronounciation of Ito cannot stand alone and it's part of Itoshii (愛しい).
** The pronounciation of Me cannot stand alone and it's part of Mederu (愛でる).
*** The pronounciation of Mana cannot stand alone and it's part of Manadeshi (愛弟子) and Manamusume (愛娘).
**** The pronounciation of U cannot stand alone and it's part of Ui (愛い).
Additional pronounciations:
1. E * (for kun'yomi)
2. O ** (for kun'yomi)
* The pronounciation of E cannot stand alone and it's part of Ehime (愛媛).
** The pronounciation of O cannot stand alone and it's part of Oshimu (愛しむ). But this is an obsolete pronounciation and no longer used now. |

I've noticed this as well and am quite annoyed by it Actually I see sometimes it translated as Megumi and Ai in the same article which is really strange
Megumi though, is a valid translation for 愛 (for names anyway), an example is, 中島 愛 Nakajima Megumi.
... maybe its all her fault
Anyway, I think the only thing that can be done is pon pon's suggestion, suggest an alternative translation, and hopefully if enough people do it, it will revert back to showing Ai.
Just as an aside, in one of the chat room games, we noticed if you translate Koda to Japanese, and then retranslate it back to english using google translate, you get Kumi |

Yes, I just wanted to add the possibility for names.
As I wrote earlier is for pronounciations of Japanese language, not related to names. But based on academic, which is not studies about names.
