eyn pointed out to me that there are lots of interviews with Ai-chan that haven't been translated yet, so here's my first attempt. It is not completely literal; I have tried to make it sound a bit more natural. Of course, it is a work in progress, and this is just the beginning of the translation. I--It’s a good tune, isn’t it? It makes you let slip a tear or two. The first time I heard it, I was really moved.
Ai--Thank you. Lol. This song, when I was making it, really had an effect, which was good. But, more than weeping [crying crying], I made this song with a smooth, sad feeling.
I--You said “when I was making it.” About when did you write this song?
Ai--I think that I was about 19. It was just summer, but in Oosaka (where she comes from) sea was dirty, and although (the night sky was also) bright [what she means is that because of light-pollution, the night sky, and the sea at night, were a dirty kind of brown colour. You know what I mean... ], when I went to Ishikawa prefecture, I went to the inky-black sea, and there, the glow of the stars was great.
I--Ootsuka-san, you have strong ties with Ishikawa prefecture, don’t you? You’ve already written a song called “The friendship treaty of Oosaka and Ishikawa” [ishikawa oosaka yuukou jouyaku 石川大阪友好条約(いしかわおおさかゆうこうじょうやく) from LOVE PUNCH], haven’t you?
Ai--That’s because I’ve made friends who come from Ishikawa. Myself, I have absolutely no connection [she means as in family, I think] with Ishikawa. 
I--This time, the sound of the song was pretty… [生楽器志向(しょうがっきしこう). I haven’t seen this word before, and I am not sure what it means] The percussion at the beginning, and the sensation of the flute; the song’s whole atmosphere fits together really well, doesn’t it…
Ai--Yeah, it does. It has the smell of a sea full of water, because it is an image like Asia, the percussion comes in first, and then it is a nostalgic, sad feeling that is brought in by the “shakuhara” (Japanese flute)
I--Is that flute sound a “shakuhara”!? Considering it is a “shakuhara,” it is a really light and airy sound.
Ai--When [the sound] very heavy, it is becuase the player blows it roughly, but because I needed a quiet feeling, it was quite different. So I asked the player to please blow softly.
I--It sounds like “fwaa fwaa.”[I assume that in the actual live interview the interviewer imitated the shakuhara] The choir also made a good sound, but did you sing that yourself?
Ai--Yes, I did. I sang it all myself. [I’m not quite sure of this next sentence] If you have stars in your eyes the whole time, then the stars seem like an optical illusion, and your eyes become “Shuwa” [Ai appears to be making up either a word or an onomatopoeic sound here, hence the quotation marks]. The song expresses that. This time round, the choir and the “shakukara” did that, although there was plenty of “breath” [this refers, I think, to the fact that both the shakuhara and the choir use “breath” to make sound (as opposed to a piano)], which created a sense of clear skies. [this actually says air or atmosphere, but I think that “skies” makes more sense here.]
I--I think that the sound stems from the piano, and this is also sad, in a good way, isn’t it…
Ai--I think so too. When we were arranging it, I first played the piano, and then the sound [whole choir etc.] gradually piled up into a building sensation.
I--Next, I want to ask about the lyrics. If you can read it as it is, separated, [not quite sure about this, maybe it is an idiomatic phrase I haven’t heard before] the contents are about the lover who has died, [passed away]although when you say, “I want to meet you again, my most-loved person,” this seems to apply to the family and friends. To get to the heart of it, what was the theme in your mind while you were writing?
Ai--About the person [the most-loved person], I wasn’t really thinking of someone specific at all. More than someone I love, it is from within the memories of those who aren’t there anymore. Although people move, the scenery within which they turn does not move. In the same star, the seasons that come and come again are still coming. It is that thought that the lyrics are really about.
I--Your lyrics always have lots of forward-looking [in this case, meaning “looking-to-the-future”] contents, but this time the lyrics seem to have a feel of reminiscence about them…
Ai--I don’t think that that we are really bound to the past, you know. Even if it isn’t the case that we say, “It just happens” [this is not literal, but it is the meaning, I think. Literally, this is “somehow it happens”], saying “I can’t do anything about it” is something that, if we are to live properly, we should stop doing. That is what I think, anyhow. [This is getting kind of philosophical, so it doesn’t translate very well into English. I have done my best to translate the meaning  . I hope you understand it. ^.^] |

I agree with spirus and manson. Don't worry about it! You're doing a wonderful job here, translating so much stuff! I know that I for one, really appreciate all the translations you've done! It's amazing! I wish I could help you out with all of this, but I don't really know any Japanese.

wow, that was excellently detailed translation!! ai wrote planetarium when she was 19  thats...amazing and she wrote something so beautiful too  which such collective thought and feeling that she can still recall it present day... |

Thanks for the compliments I have tried to make it sound good. There is another page to the interview, so I'll do that soon, but I'm working on translation of another iterview at the moment, so I'll be at least a week. I wish I had more time to devote to translation, but there always seems to be something else I need to do...  |
