I usually don't like ballads much (since none are rarely released here in America) but I've come to appericate ballads ever since I started to listen to Jpop. (Wow, there are so many of them!) Ai's ballad are some of the best I've heard and happen to be my favorite type of song from her. |

That's because Ayu has to force herself to do the high-pitched thing. She is NOT a good high-pitched singer, hence she does not sing her originally high-pitched songs the same way anymore. Her voice simply wasn't made for that, unlike Ai's. Ai can most certainly sing higher than Ayu any day.
Daisukidayo is like, my favorite song ever.. but I wouldn't call that low pitched. 680 yen would be a much better example of Ai singing in a "low" voice. Kingyo Hanabi is still not very (even though, I agree it is lower than omst of her songs) low... Ai's low is like most people's "high" so yeah... PURANETARIAMU isn't a very good example either, in my opinion.
Ayu sounds best when she sings in between the two pitches. When she was younger she could pull off the whole high-pitched thing but she really just can't handle it anymore.
Despite the fact that Ayu is my favorite singer, I would rather hear her singing in a lower voice rather than a higher. She has to try way to hard to hit super high notes. (There aren't even very high notes in any of Ayu's songs!) |

Otsuka mayn't have showcased it in her songs before. But I really think that her songs do not do her vocal range any justice. From some of her interviews, it is evident that she can have quite a low voice that does not raise any suspicion of her having a very high voice she chooses to showcase in her songs.
That said, I sorta agree that Ai's low is most people's standard singing voice....
Regarding Ayu, I think she may have put too much strain on her voice earlier in her career for her to really hit those high notes nowadays. Her live singing isn't extremely bad, but it does not compare at all too what we hear from the studio, which I also expect is heavily modified/altered. That said, I don't hate Ayu at all!
I too, would rather listen to Ayumi in a lower voice, her higher voice sometimes stings my ears. |

First lets clear up that Ayus voice with high pitch was only for her two first albums, the best songs (and ballads) of her, imo, arent in those two. After that her voice is actually very nice and proper for a ballad, I dont see why to doubt o.o
Then to the main topic,
Its sad to see Ai at number 9 when her work on ballads is gorgeous. Kingyo Hanabi, Daisuki da yo, Shabondama, Cherish; this year had two awesome ballads as well PURANETARIUMU and NEKO ni Fuusen; awesome ballads are even as B-sides like Natsuzora, Hoshikuzu and Momo NO HanaBIRA Studio Live Version. No one can define Ai without those songs, that are ballads, and surely these cant be only at 9th position. However I understand the competition, at least we didnt get any Koda or hitomi in there, lol with such ranking it could be possible XD
MAy we see Ai at the top next time! ^^ |

I agree with Spirus. She can still sing in low pitch.. Rainbow anyone? Or Walking Proud. I think Ayu deserves the queen status simply because she's sung some very excellent ballads in the past that are simply masterpieces. Lately we've been hearing higher notes since she loves releasing more dramatic ballads while Ai simply cannot in the manner Ayu can.
Anyhow I don't know much about the other competitors except Hikki.. who shall obviously get a high rank and Mika who sings ballads almost all the time so it's obvious she'll get a high rank. I admit I was kinda surprised to see Ai and ORANGE RANGE at #9 since I expected them to score higher.. but there's always next year |

Aww I wish Ai was higher in the rank. Are those other people really that good? Now I know Ayumi's ballads are good, but what about those others? Utada Hikaru only made a few ballads didn't she? |

| yea, quality is more important than quantity . so most likely the quality will effect the ranking ( i don`t mean that ai songs are bad) |

Mika's number 3, yeah.
Utada's number 4, yeah.
Ai's number 9? No...!!!
Shud be higher right.
Maybe she has various styles other than ballad.
But Mika's more to ballad as we can see...
But y is ayumi at the first?? |

| I guess Ayu's Heaven this year really charmed the people... I was quite captivated by it too ... very nice sad song for a sad love story(Shinobi the movie's theme song) |

I agree. Utada's ballads are definately excellent in quality and have a certain poignancy in them. I'm not surprised she scored so high since she always strives for quality rather than quantity. |

Hm... After listening to Heaven more and more.... I find that her voice sounds a bit dry during the verse. I still think she doesn't deserve number one. >_>
I agree, Utada Hikaru does strive for quality rather than quantity, even though I don't enjoy her ballads as much as other people do.... (I find she can't hit those high notes well. i.e. First Love) |
