Synopsis:
The 44th NHK Taiga Drama is about the life of Minamoto no Yoshitsune (源 義経) (1159 - May_17, 1189) was a late Heian and early Kamakura general of the Minamoto clan of Japan. Yoshitsune was the ninth son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo. His older brother Minamoto no Yoritomo founded the Kamakura shogunate. Exiled and seperated from his mother at a young age by Lord Kiyomori, who he thought to be his father, Ushiwaka learns of his place in the Genji family and that Lord Kiyomori was his enemy and that he was destined to lead the Genji to battle against Lord Kiyomori of the Heike.
I've been watching this series for a while now and am nearing the end. So far, this has been the best Taiga I've seen. 2004's Shinsengumi was good but this is so much better. The way the story develops, the relationship between Yoshitsune and his vassals, the strengthening of bonds and the occasional appearence of Ueto Aya as Utsubo make this series an all out hit for me. The action is choreographed with great care to give the feel of a real battle from the time of feudal Japan. The politics, the military, the devious Ex-emperor, and the fight for the capital and a new country of peace drive the warriors on either side of this epic encounter of power. I recommend everyone should give it a try.

This drama looks interesting, but from the screenshots it looks a little old, isn't it? The thing I like about J-Dorama is that each dorama is only 8 to 12 episodes long, which is very special compare to those crazy Hong Kong drama that has over 1000 episodes. Due to the small amount of episodes, it's easier to finish a dorama too, and usually they are so good that an 8 episode J-Dorama classic can arouse more emotion than a 40 episodes garbage drama produced by Hong Kong, Singapore etc. (no offense, but it's so true) This dorama is a little long for my taste, but I'll give it a try whenever I have the chance. 
Not a big fan of history drama, but the casting looks interesting. I recognized some of them, like Densha Otoko's actor Itoh Atsushi, CM queen Ueto Aya, H!P ex-member Goto Maki and Takizawa Hideaki from Tackey & Tsubasa. 
Takizawa Hideaki has a new drama coming out called "Satomi Hakkenden" which is based on a Samurai novel, and guess what? S.E.N.S. will be making music for this drama too, they are famous for their works in LOVE 2000, I think. Anyway, I bet it will be a nice drama to watch when it comes out. The main actress, Ayase Haruka is getting quite popular lately, but I think I still like Horikita Maki and Sawajiri Erika more.

eyn .. u seemed to have mentioned quite a few things to which im compelled to post a reply ^_^
first of all, i havent yet seen any hk or singapore dramas, but i have a few korean dramas, they too can go on for a while, maybe it was just the ones i saw on arirang.. but yoshitsune is different in the sense that it was NHK's 46th Annual Taiga Drama... NHK's Taiga Dramas run all year round and always follow one story from Japan's history. in 2004, it was Shinsengumi which focused around the re-opening of international trade with the coming of the black ships. This year's Taiga called Koumya ga Tsuji follows the story of a samurai warrior and his wife. Each NHK Taiga is usually 49 episodes long.
As for Yoshitsune, do watch it if you get a chance to. It is an amazing story and now that I'm on ep42ish, with only a few more left to go, I'm beginning to think that that would probably not be enough. As you said the cast is impressive and the drama really stands out.
Taki was cool in Satomi Hakkenden, because I think of his role in Yoshitsune ^_^ and yes the main actress in Satomi Hakkenden is Ayase Haruka. She won the best supporting actress award for her debut in 2004's megahit drama "Sekai no Chushin de, Ai wo Sakebu" [Crying out for Love, in the center of the world]. This season, she's also in Byakuyakou, which reunites her with the crew and her male lead from sekaichu. I saw the first ep of Byakuyakou which was a 2 hour special, and it was awesome. I'm really looking forward to the next one.
Horikita Maki is adorable. I won't argue with you there, and Sawajiri Erika used to be a Gravier model and if you chk out her pictures from any of her numerous photobooks, you'll be surprised, they are all very steamy and sexy, very different from her image in ichi ritoru. But rest assured, she did impress everyone in ichi ritoru, I won't be surprised if she wins an award for that one ^_^ ...

i watched this drama until 20+ episodes and i lost interest in it cos i felt that the story was really draggy. they have a great cast though and i thought the child actor acting young yoshitsune during the first few was very good. i guess im not into japan history....
im a singaporean and i agree singapore drama sucks. its not that the actors and actress sucks but its the plot of their dramas that sucks. there are only a few singapore dramas that are good only....that's y most of my time i spend is in front of my laptop rather than the tv. i dare say that i spend less than 4 hours in front of the tv per week.
i think that hong kong dramas are not bad...i grow up seeing more hk dramas than sg dramas because my family and i understand cantonese  |

yea sian i agree singapore drama sucks ....its plot , acting all are pathetic and yea i rather watch hk drama it rocks =D

wow about yoshitune i was reading the manga and im reali into it now though i reali like history =D so i'll D/L tis show and best of all its a ancient war drama i luv tis type of drama as it got politics,romance,war in it =D |

| I cant really stand historical dramas...Even Indian ones, they use like old language, and all the honorifics *shudder* and thet just drone on...i like to read about history,not watch it |
