Ok, I checked SONY's official site. She did in fact use the hiragana for her name while on that label, so that explains why last.fm would list her name that way.

I updated the first post such that it now shows the weekly top artists and tracks for Channel-Ai group. It's always interesting to know which song is more popular among forum members, so yeah, join the group now if you want to contribute your playlist to the aggregate result.
A reminder for people who already joined or are going to join. Use a player that support Unicode please. The best music player out there for Windows user is FB2K, you gotta believe the geekmaster (that's me) on this one. I'm sick of seeing songs like "Neko ni Fuusen" on the chart instead of "ネコに風船". This is most likely contributed by Winamp users where they cannot read Japanese and thus, changing their song title to Romaji. That's just not right! *never use Romaji for song title, it's very noob, and Ai-chin will be laughing at you*
Please use Japanese song title for your song by all means. If you player can't display Japanese or don't allow you to input Japanese song title, ditch it. It's just that simple.
P.S. If you tried FB2K out and have any question about it, ask me on messenger, see my profile for my messenger handle |

I have a tiny little problem that causes me to tag my songs in romaji. I can't read "ネコに風船" and know that it's "Neko ni Fuusen." (I've only recently learned to identify Ai, Ayu, and Hikki's names, and the only song title I recognize is "Planetarium.")
If I were to tag my songs that way, I would have no idea what they were and it would be a real pain when I wanted to find a certain song. I use a player that supports unicode, but my brain does not.
Also, I've had Last.fm for about a year now and to change my titles would probably screw up my stats.
I... I don't want Ai-chan to laugh at me, though. I just can't read Japanese at all yet.
If it's going to be a big problem, I can leave the group. |

First of all, it's okay to stay, I'm not too serious about this matter, take it as a suggestion from me towards a more original chart? Romaji songs title are indeed quite annoying, but that's for people who know how to read a little Japanese.
And for your problem, I would say it's probably better to start learning Japanese whenever possible. Japanese isn't a hard language, it's especially easy to learn just the katakana and hiragana, all it takes is one week at most, if you really put effort in it.
What you need to do is learn the basic first, then you can pick up words, kanji and sentence here and there, little by little. If you don't even take the first step, you'll never reach the destination (I take that as being proficient in Japanese). Tagging songs in Japanese do makes you feel more friendly towards the language, it's a small step, but it helps you to get familiar with them.
I know it will be a pain to retag all your songs. Take your time, and hopefully someday I'll see song title in Japanese in your last.fm chart. |

I just have this whole thing where I'm afraid to do any self-learning of Japanese. I don't want to teach myself bad habits or incorrectly and then take formal lessons later on and be lost.
I do think I could probably work on re-labeling the songs slowly. Perhaps If I started in order by single and then moved on to albums or something like that. But for it to really make a difference in the Last.fm group, everyone would have to relabel their songs.
Unless I'm the only one using romanji.
Not to mention that if I do relabel, I'll end up with a mix of romanji/katakana/hiragana. Unless there's a feature where I can go back and fix that in my charts. I'll have to look into that. |

Nope, you're not the only one! I'm trying to teach myself japanese as well as (someday) move to native language song titles, but it takes time
I did some reading to figure out why Last.fm can translate Ai's romanized name to 大塚愛...it seems like it pulls data from musicbrains.com and has aliases for artist names. Why they can't do it for track names, I don't know. |

Take a look at this week's ranking (check first posting), Cherish got to the top! I bet it's the LOVE COOK effect, seeing 5:09am, LOVE MUSiC and Birthday Song are at 3rd and 4th position. btw, the reason why songs like U-boat and Hane ari Tamago is not on the chart is quite simple, some members used Romaji while others (including me) used Japanese song title. I really hope someday everyone will start tagging their song in Japanese so we can see a more accurate chart result.

It's because there are way too many tracks compare to the amount of artist out there. It's a scale problem, let's say an artist on average have 100 songs, you have to scale the database 100 times larger to implement this feature. Also, Romanized song title is not always correct and usually have several variations compare to Romaji of an artist name. |

Yeah, I guess you're right. I'll have to work on converting to kanji. I suppose it's a good opportunity to learn more characters
Still waiting for my LOVE COOK to arrive. I can't wait! |

Hi all last.fm folks, I make use of spellcheck subscriber's feature and made a new LOVE COOK style chart, you can see how it looks like on my first post, which will be automatically updated with the latest weekly chart. You can use this style too for your own chart, just copy the url and change "gartist" to "artist", and change "channel-ai" to your own username.
Please give me feedback about the chart because I still have around 23 hours to make changes before it becomes permanent. Also, if you have any cool idea which picture will be suitable for a chart like that, please post the image here so I can work on it. spellcheck's subscriber status expired on last day of 2005. |

Maybe some of you don't know, those song track information and artist information at last.fm is pulled out from MusicBrainz website. I've registered myself an account there and have been working a little to correct those wrong tags provided by other users. Wanna see how it works? Click here for Ai Otsuka releases at MusicBrainz. (if you spot any error in those song or album titles, please post it here so I can update it)
I need help modifying all the Romaji title of Ai's songs. I have great trouble trying to find the most accurate Romaji for each of her songs title since there's so many different version of Romaji out there. I wonder if we can all agree upon the same Romaji for her song titles or no? I might also edit those Wikipedia entry since the Romaji song title is not unified.
For example, should it be SUPERMAN, Superman, or SUUPAMAN. How about FRIENDS vs. Friends and FURENZU? Or Momo no Hanabira vs. Momo NO HanaBIRA. Which one is the more appropriate version?
Give some opinion here if you have something to say, or if you know anything about the professional way of romanizing Japanese. As far as I know, if it's in Katakana you romanized them in CAPS? What if it's an English word written in Katakana? You express it as normal English or English in all CAPS? Of course, there's many other issue too, like whether you capitalize the first letter of each Romaji of Hiragana, example: Kingyo Hanabi or Kingyo hanabi?
P.S. This post might deserve a topic itself, but for now I will leave it as it is. |

Hi there people, first of all ignore the Romanization stuff I poted above, even though I know most of you haven't really read it or isn't interested. I sort of have that thing figured out after some discussion with the folks at wiki.theppn.
Now it's a good news for Last.fm users in our group. After not updating the Ai Otsuka fanlist for over 10 months, they finally decided to update it and guess what? 9 out of 20 fan listed are in our Channel-Ai group! Oh well, I personally think it's quite amazing, here's members here that who is on the list (number in the bracket is play count of Ai-chin's tracks):
eyn (2367)
teufelinou (2438)
boakan (4108)
LVXS (1088)
HilaryDuffFanboy (655)
kaorumorite (874)
johnt (700)
madgirlslovesong (2449)
Lainay (649)
It's nice to see our members appear on the Ai Otsuka fanlist at Last.fm. I hope by the time it updates next time, the top 20 fans there are all active members here at Channel-Ai!
For those of you who listen to Ai-chin music all the time and want to tell the world you're a big fan, it's time to get an account at Last.fm, install the plugin for your player and be part of the Channel-Ai group!
Lastly, I'm proud to be on the top of the "Top Fans" list on Ai-chin's page! Afterall, I'm fairly new to Last.fm compare to many other top fans i.e. I joined on Oct 6, 2005.
Here's a crazy picture I made for this post:
P.S. If you haven't joined our Last.fm group, join now! See the picture and you'll know why! |
