-------------------------------------
I first started listening to Rie Fu when her second single "Life Is Like a Boat" which was really her first mainstream single release started playing on TV and Radio. It was soon picked as the first ending to a new anime series called "BLEACH" which was based on the popular shonen manga of the same name. The anime was a huge success and as a result, so was Rie's first big single. A year later, her 3rd single "I Wanna Go To A Place..." was on the OST of the Gundam Seed: DESTINY movie.
She's an art student in London, and yes, everytime I go to London, I keep an eye out to see if I can spot her in the crowd. When her first album came out April 2005, I downloaded it and loved it from the very first time I heard it. In fact, I loved it so much that a couple of weeks later, my very own copy of the album arrived ^_^ and thanks to YesAsia, I didn't even have to pay tax on it.
You don't have to believe me when I tell you but that was 10 months ago, and I've been listening to her album almost everyday since that day, sometimes multiple no. of times at a stretch (waiting at airports, airplane rides, roadtrips, all through the summer, I was listening to it). It IS that good! It is such a shame that she's so under appreciated. I really hope more people can get to listen to her music and come to appreciate it as much as I do. That's why all her singles up to date are on my radio.blog. Do check them out HERE. Scroll down to find her album and singles. She speaks perfect Japanese and perfect English, as I found out first hand Her English language songs are a real treat if you're used to the Japanese English accent of the likes of Ban-chan (Tomoko Van of DAI) or Nakashima Mika, as sometimes it can be hard to tell that she's really Japanese.
Recently I even went to see her LIVE in a small club called FLUID in London. I had to take a 3 hour train there and then back, but it was totally worth it. Here is a picture from her live. At her live, she performed "I Wanna Go To A Place", and three new singles from her forthcoming album, including "Long Long Way". Her LIVE was a lot better than I expected. I guess she's one of those artists that's really good LIVE. Because it was in a small club in London, where not many people knew her, it was interesting to note that not everybody was paying attention to her when she first started playing as everyone was busy with their drinks and chatting away, but once she got into playing, slowly, everyone stopped talking and everyone was enjoying her playing.
For those of you who have Japanese language skills, check out her blog Rie Fuのブログ - ちゅるっとりえふぅ (Rie Fu's Blog - Churutto Rie Fu) that she herself writes on (updating about once every fortnight). It really is a great read and if there is a demand for it, I don't mind translating her posts and putting them up on this thread. Here are some kawaii pictures of Rie from her blog, including her "Coming of Age Day" picture, that she posted up on her blog for her fans to see.
She recently performed live in Cannes and is currently back in London at university. She designes all the artwork for her singles and albums and has recently finished on the artwork for "tiny tiny melody". I'm guessing she'll be making another trip out to Japan in March to promote her new single tiny tiny melody which is out on the 8th of March and her new album Rose Album which is out on the 24th of March, almost exactly on the 2nd anniversary of her debut.
"An up and coming storm...", is what one magazine called her, she's slowly establishing herself as a well-respected singer/songwriter.
[Official information taken from her official website avialable in both Japanese and English, Rie Fu's personal blog (Japanese) and single/album release dates from HMV Japan]

Ohh. I absolutely adore Rie fu and her music. I have her debut album, and it's amazing. I love the fact that she does English and Japanese both so well. A new album? A new single? Yes! I'm so excited! Finally!
You got to meet her?! That must have been such an amazing experience! I'm so jealous. I can't even imagine what it would be like meeting one of my favorite singers or idols. Wow.
I agree that it's sad that she's so underappreciated! She has quite a bit to offer, and I hope maybe with the right promotion this next single and album can get her a bit more of the fame that she deserves! |

# tiny tiny melody (2006.03.08)
1. tiny tiny melody (watch pv / listen / lyrics)
2. Long Long Way
3. Tiny Tiny Melody - Original Instrumental
* * *
It's not very often that Rie Fu brings out a new single. But in preperation for her upcoming album titled "ROSE ALBUM", she is releasing her 5th single titled "Tiny Tiny Melody". You can watch the PV here. Before I go on to praise the lyrics and thoughts behind the song, I'll give you all a chance to read them yourselves. I've written down the lyrics (from listening to the song) and then translated them. Read translations here.
I'm very tired. It's probably impossible now,
But still, I raise my head high.
What moved me, weren't someone else's words,
But were my own...
Oh... the sweetest sweetest melody
Oh... this Tiny Tiny Melody
Oh... the sweetest sweetest melody, controls me.
I absolutely love the lyrics. It seems a very strong song, one that comes from the heart of someone who's been through tough times; someone who found the courage to see it through. The guitar arrangements on this track are also very impressive. They are in keeping with her very folk/country style. I suppose it's only fitting that the PV was shot in California. I also like the harmonies on this song. I'm having a very hard time finding something in this song that I don't like. Yes, I know I'm biased, but try and trust me on this one, listen to it and the song will speak for itself.
What are you waiting for? Buy this single, here. Sometimes with songs, you get a lot of repitition of lyrics and it gets slightly boring, and although there is a lot repititive lyrics in the second half of this song, it is done very nicely with slight variations and an addictive "tiny tiny" melody. The opening lines of the song, it seems to me, speak of English weather, which I have a feeling, she doesn't like. I can somehow understand that feeling, the weather in this country can sometimes really bring you down. The song itself is about how this "sweetest sweetest" melody cheers you up when you're down. I give this track a whopping 5/5 K's.
I'm also really looking forward to the B-side of this single, it's a song called "Long Long Way". That one too is very melodic, like most of her music. Many of my Japanese friends have told me that her popularity in Japan although on the rise, is slightly hindered perhaps by the fact that her songs are a mixture of equal amounts English and Japanese. This makes her songs apparantly harder to Karaoke to (a favorite Japanese pass-time). I can see the albeit slightly sad logic to that. But I also think that with her songs being picked for the original soundtracks of hit anime series' like Bleach2 and Gundam Seed: Destiny3, her fanbase will continue to grow. From having been to her LIVE in London, I know that she has quite a following among the anime (and j-pop) fans of the UK ^_^
I hope you will all enjoy her new single.
kei ^_^
PS. Love the new Channel-Ai, its soo cool. |

I LOVE HER NEW SINGLE XD;;. I first heard of Rie Fu through Bleach (Yes, how sad XD;;. I stopped watching the anime after about episode 30, so knowing of HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR and YUI doesn't come from Bleach xD)
I love Rie's lyrics, because they're almost always very beautiful, and, well, yes. Her voice takes getting used to, I supposed, and sounds a bit "lazy" sometimes, but that's the charm of it.
I can't wait for her new album, and the release of her new single |

Hopefully someone from here who lives in the UK, would come join me for the Rie Fu LIVE.

| horizon, I think I'm meant to be going to London on the weekend of the gig you're going to. For the London Expo but that's on the Saturday and Sunday so I doubt I could afford to stop over in London on the Friday night. I'd love to see Rie Fu live though. I've been listening to her quite a lot. I really love Decay. |

It could actually be possible for me.... I guess I'm just a little scared because I've only ever been to London a couple of times and this trip would involve a bit more planning than usual. I even have a place to stay at in Tottenham if I want to.
It turns out the guy I was going to be travelling to London with has decided he can't afford it..... grrrrrrrr!
Technically I could do it on my own........
I love being so indecisive
I'll ask my friend in Leicester. Maybe we'll have a day out in London.
horizon do you know about the London Travelcard thing? I can't seem to get any definite answers from people as to how much or if you have to buy it in advance. Thanks. |

London Travelcards come in many shapes and sizes, you can get ones for buses, one for the underground, or one that takes you on both. then you can choses which zones you want to travel to/in. i usually go to london and get the zone1,2 pass (no student discounts ). they range in price from "welcome to london expensive" (~£3) to "omg im not made of money dammit" (~£24) for one day... lol
i've sent you a pm about the live on friday. |
