Many members have been asking question like "how do I view this type of file", it gets a little frustrating when you have to repeat the same answer again and again, so here you go, a simple and hopefully helpful tutorial that will help you with all these enquiries.
Video
In order to be able to view different kinds of media files, you are recommended to download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. While installing, you will be asked which component you want to be installed. Choose "Playback Only" if you don't need any extra feature and want to keep installation size as small as possible. You can manually check extra components that you think might be useful for you, such as MPEG2 decoder. You do not need to install both BSPlayer and Media Player Classic, Media Player Classic alone will do. After installing, you might need to restart the computer before the codec will work.
Installing K-Lite Mega Codec Pack gives you Quicktime and Real Alternatives, such that you don't need to install either Quicktime player or Real player to view Real and Quicktime streaming files. Honestly, both Quicktime and Real player stinks.
Having the codec pack alone might not be suffice, you will occasionally having trouble viewing files that is encoded in MPEG2, especially those HDTV files. No worries, VLC media player comes to your rescue! Some of my HDTV files can't be played in any player except VLC media player, so you know how handy this player can be.
Extra knowledge:
.avi - [audio video interleave] usually encoded in divx or xvid, if you have both codec you'll be fine
.mpg - [motion pictures experts group] some are the normal mpg files that are extremely huge compare to their .avi counterpart, some are MPEG2 encoded and requires player such as VLC player to view the file properly
.vob - [video object] the default dvd format for videos, you might require a dvd playback software to view the file, K-Lite Codec Pack might also have the decoder you need
Audio
I know many of you are using Winamp as your primary player. I used to do that but not anymore. Why? One of the main reason is that Winamp does not support Unicode tags such that you can never read the Japanese tag properly in Winamp (Ai's singles I posted are tagged in Japanese). Another reason is that Winamp looks ugly despite the fact that there's a lot of skin available out there. With or without skin, Winamp consumes more resources and memory compare to foobar2000, which is the player that I will recommend you to try!
Click here to download foobar2000. Choose the special version because useful 3rd party plugins will be included. foobar2000's configuration window might look ovewhelming at the beginning but no worries, if you have question just ask me on messenger.
Here's a screenshot of my foobar:
As you can see, foobar doesn't have a skin itself, it uses the native windows colour scheme, and thus you'll never need to find a new skin just to match your wallpaper. Also, as you can see, all Ai's songs are displayed in Japanese, unlike Winamp where ??? will be displayed due to incompatible unicode tag. I know Windows Media Player support unicode, but foobar looks way better and faster.

That's not true, it allows you to play divx encoded file but that's it. There's more than one codec available right now, even though divx is the most popular codec, having divx codec alone won't let you watch video encoded in other codec. And there's MPEG2 as I said for those HDTV files, which will not play in any other player other than VLC for some reason.
Another reason to get K-lite is that it gives you Quicktime and Real alternatives as mentioned above. Having these means you do not need to install Quicktime and RealPlayer into your computer, because they take a lot of HDD space relatively and you just end up cluttering your PC with more piece of software. |

Yes, you posted it in the wrong thread (and I moved it here), and this is not the first time I believed. Being one of the top poster, can you please show a good example to our new members?
Anyway, obviously you didn't read this topic at all. I don't know what to say to you, good luck I guess! |

| I just downloaded the newest Planetarium Live that was posted, and I can't get it to play in Windows Media Player, now I just reformatted my computer the other day, so I know I'm probably missing a few codecs, but I already installed k-lite mega, matroska, divx, and xvid. So does anyone know what I'm missing yet? |
