Well, I'm not sure how many of you here have multiple email accounts like I do. I have active accounts at Hotmail, Yahoo!, Gmail, and I also have a university email account for academic purpose. Having multiple email accounts can be a pain when you're trying to check mail and sometimes you end up missing some important email that's sent to your less used account just because you're too lazy to check it. So here I am, to introduce you a painless effort to check multiple email account using a single program called Mozilla Thunderbird.
If you do not have multiple email accounts, feel free to stick with the traditional web mail interface that you've grown used to, but if you want check your email effortlessly or in other words, "like a pro", you should probably read on.
Using a mail client save you the trouble to log into your mail account manually using the web interface. I used to use Outlook Express simply because Hotmail does not support POP3 access and you need to install 3rd party program to get it working with Thunderbird, which can be a real pain. However, the introduction of a new Thunderbird extension called WebMail has changed this.
Here's a little tutorial for those of you who would like to try using mail client to save you time checking mail. I'll try to make it as simple and straightforward as possible, feel free to post questions here if you have any problems.
- Download and install Mozilla Thunderbird
- Download WebMail extension (first file in this page) to your desktop using right click, "Save Link As..."
- Open Thunderbird, go to Tools > Extensions, this will open an extension window
- Drag and drop the extension file you just downloaded from your desktop into this extension window
- An extension install dialog that looks like the figure below will pop up, click "Install Now"
- Restart Thunderbird for Webmail extension to take effect
- Go to this page again and download the individual mail server extension you want to check using Thunderbird, for example, if you want to use Hotmail ONLY, then download ONLY the Hotmail extension
- Install the downloaded extension(s) using the drag and drop method as before
- Restart Thunderbird for newly installed extension(s) to take effect
- Setup your account using the official guide
Here's a screenshot that shows you how your mail client should look like with multiple webmail accounts, notice I have 5 different email accounts and I can check them all at once using Thunderbird:
That's all. I hope those of you who haven't started using email client like Thunderbird can give it a try because it really makes your life easier by saving you lots of time logging into each webmail interface to check for new messages. It also makes it possible for you to check multiple email account under the same email provider at once, for example, if you have 2 Gmail account, you do not need to log out one before you can log in the other in order to check for new messages.
Feel free to discuss how you check your email in this thread and if you find my tutorial about Thunderbird useful for your daily email checking. 
Note: first time checking email with Thunderbird will take quite a while since it will download ALL emails you have on the server. You can shorten this time by checking "Download unread messages only" when you double click on Hotmail or Yahoo extensions you installed in step 8. |

| I use ThunderBird too It's the best. I really like the thing that you can change the way that it looks. So mine looks like Apple's Tiger Mail 2 now. I don't get mail very often.... But still... Thunderbird rocks XD It's been with me about 3 months now. Same time as firefox. |

I'd never used Thunderbird before because I always read that you couldn't use Hotmail through it. Thanks for the heads up eyn although I can't seem to download any messages yet...... I'm sure I'll figure it out before today is over  |

| Ah been using Thunderbird for a really long time... xD Don't even remeber when I started. I have about 6 accounts linked there haha. >_>; I use different email for different things, so yeah. So far it's been great~ The Tray Icon extension is the best, I can keep it running without it taking space on my taskbar. |

hmm.... I still can't get it to work. I've installed the webmail and hotmail extensions and when I load it up it tells me how many messages I have but then doesn't download them. I'll keep trying  |

| Thanks a ton eyn. I installed Thunderbird awhile ago but I had no idea how to channel all of my existing web-based e-mail accounts into it. I love Firefox and if Thunderbird is half the program that Firefox is, I'm sold. |

Man... I'm an idiot for always ignoring Thunderbird just because I thought hotmail could do it all. But now that I'm starting to have multiple email accounts... I don't want to miss any important emails!
