talk about creativity, i'd say western hip hop has no creativity at all. just reading words as fast as they could, and that's all...
for black metal, generally a few musical rules are applied, with or without known.
in guitars, general tremolo picking is used, sometimes thru out the whole song which lengh of 8 minutes (that really kills me, tiring). pinched harmonics and artificial harmonics are widely used. Standard tuned guitars, and sometimes drop C or drop B. Rarely down to drop B.
in drums, double bass is kinda compulsory i'd say. Blast beats, D beats which able to pump a drummer's adrenaline to the max... (even my drum instructor finds it hard to do so, the stamina is needed...) 4 toms, 2 floor toms, lots of cymbals... and so on. Unlike basic step up for pop music, metal ones is really heavy.
Vocals, ok u know it... Is either howling or screaming. Lol
Bass.. nothing much about that. Not that melodic as i know if compared to Korn's bass player. The others, the keyborad, the ochestra setting... they are superb, as to create the gothic atmosphere. Imagine how are u goin to stuff in 64 ppl in a studio to record the ochestra pieces... That aint easy.
cradle of filth is not everything from black metal. They have much deviations from the pure black metal recently. There are still few nice bands out there hidden under the ground waiting to be discovered. Oh well, not that u need to know them. Just that pls dun presumme they do not make creative songs...
I play the electric guitar, and electric guitar only, not acoustic. And also very limited drums., since i've just played for 2 months of drums. I'm going to quit music and performance club in my university, because... sunday school goers there, who make up the majority of the club will not like what i like to play. In turn, i dun really like what they are playing too. That's a bad news for me... |

I disagree with you there depressant, on their being no creativity in western hip hop. You make the same close-minded judgement a lot of people make with any music today, you look at the mainstream and you assume that is the general distinction of the genre. The anti feminine & anti white sentiments coupled rappers with video clips accompanied by slutty girls, are a very small minority put forward cause controversy = cash & sexuality sells in western society, of which has been a mainstay in mainstream music for the last 20 years. The true essence of hip hop is mixing beats & rhythm with their roots & the tales of the street, the diversity in their stories is a huge part in making Hip-Hop the most creative in the music industry today.
Anyway enough with that, I guess I grew out of a lot of the heavy stuff when I was 14, nothing related too me or gave me much interest in terms of what the songs meant, I guess I still love Tool, Maynard Rules! you always have too respect slayer. Early SOAD were great but they dropped the ball a bit on the last album. I do love 90's Grunge whether you consider that heavy. Bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Blind Melon & the special side project 'Temple of the Dog. |

the main thing i was refering to was those which i could see at MTV and Channel V. Like what u said, where the fat and ugly rappers got surrounded by liqours, bling bling, slutty girls and so on. Which is so theoritically wrong and immoral, yet unrealistic. oh boy, who the hell on earth would go to those fat and ugly rapper and rub them around?
Somehow that is that i could see at the media now. I think ppl around here has less true influence about real, genuine hip hop that u said. Is jurrasic 5 can be considered as a true ones? Eh... i listened to eminem too when i was 17 during high school days.
Talk about slayer. They are good, according to ppl around me. But i've never listen to them yet though. Anyway other nice bands to introduce besides that? Symphonic gothic metal from norway and sweden sound good too. Few of them mentioned lacuna coil, i haven't try them though. I prefer Leaves' eyes til, gothic yet has a lil bit of folk element in them. |

| I know this is complteley off the topic being discussed at this point, but it is in the topic of heavey music. I saw GWAR real recently. Anyone else been to any of their shows recently? It's pretty much one of the best shows out there right now. |

so sorry for being off topic - ed... 
I cant seem to find any new bands to listen to. Evanescence released a new album. Sounds the same as the previous. Maybe is the thing that Amy Lee's vocal range is not as wide as what she supposed to be. Makes me feel the songs are about the same. No offense to the evanescence fans out there, but i think i get bored to them very fast... |

You might want to check out Stream Of Passion's debut, "Embrace the Storm". Not quite gothic stuff, but very progressive and kinda symphonic (or at least with LOTS of keys). They also have a pretty talented female singer.

| I like KEYS, i really like it. although it might not be as Gothic as i could imagined, but i would still like to check out that band. I found out that gothic metal kinda music with female vocalist is really attractive. really. |

hrm, i don't know about goth metal or whatever, i stick mostly to grungey stuff and typical heavy metal, i guess. nothing too out there. I'm a big Tool fan, Maynard will swallow your soul, and of course, that makes me an APC fan almost by default. i like Metallica and some Megadeth, also Pantera is good. never liked Slipknot, and older Korn, Issues and back is good, after that, i hate them with a passion. what else? NIN is ok, they were better, but then, so was Metallica. St. Anger, wtf? Any Rob Zombie fans? Dragular is still a great song. My favorite band tho, is Staind, and I also like Fuel and Breaking Benjamin. Rage Against the Machine is another great metal band, but they had alot of funk and other stuff enfuzed into their work. I like Audioslave and Soundgarden too. what else? Chevelle, they do some pretty good metal work. Anyone remember Toad the Wet Sprockets or the Cranberries. I still have a soft spot for 90's stuff.

| Soundgarden were Great, Cornell is my second favourite singer behind Buckley loved his song for Casino Royale. Though his work with Audioslave is still good except I didn't like the last album though it sounded awful first 2 were quite good. Have you listened too Temple Of The Dog. Say Hello 2 Heaven, Wooden Jesus & Hungerstrike were great. Can't wait for Cornell's Solo Album next year. |

yeah, temple of the dog was cool, such an interesting project. i only heard hungerstrike, but that was still such an excellent song. i havent heard that whole albums from Audioslave, i just heard the releases. ive been thinking of getting their first album when i have a little more cash to spend. cornell is an excellent singer, and Casino Royale was a great song! great movie too. ^_~

| I've been into Killswich for a while now. They are a great band. They are really good live too. I've seen them twice, and they put on a good show each time. |
