To my mind there's none whose style is more or less close to Ai's.

All I can recommend is:
Maaya Sakamoto - She's my second favourite after Ai. Recommend!
YUI - her voice is great. Many have already recommended her.
Kawabe Chieco - her fast beat remind me a bit of Ai's but she doesn't have powerful ballad yet. If you saw 'Ouran Host School Club', the title song is sung by her.
Yuna Ito - I like her songs but to my mind there's nothing close to Ai's. Hers are more of R&B.
melody - also good beat, very fun

Wow so many good suggestions out there so far.

I'm trying really hard to think of artists more of AI's style but it's hard because Ai has two, her ballad songs and fun songs.

-YUI's definitely an up and coming artist. She's progressively getting more and more music out there.

-Angela Aki, I think she plays great piano songs and she has nice vocals. Um if you're into anime she did the third ending song of the Blood+ anime and if you're into video games, she did the theme song for Final Fantasy XII.I'm actually quite shocked that no one has mentioned her. But I find that she's one of those artists you either really like or don't (based on people I've talked to).

-Maaya Sakamoto is awesome. Fantastic vocals. I personally preferred the stuff she did with Yoko Kanno more but I'll she how her up coming album turns out.

-Namie Tamaki, she usally does more faster, dance type songs so I'm not sure if you'll like her stuff. She's got quite a few nice songs though.
Namie Amuro

When you say you've heard of Yuna Ito and Mika Nakashima through NANA do you mean you've only heard the music that they've done for NANA. Because if that's the case, I would say to check out Mika Nakashima's albums "BEST" and "MUSIC" to give her a second chance. I personally perfer her ballad/slower songs but that's just me. And most of her new stuff is more of her as an artist whom is venturing with new sounds and different kind of music, even with her NANA songs, it was experimental. Don't get me wrong, some of her new stuff turned out great.
And Yuna Ito, outside of NANA, she's got some pretty good fast songs. Not a lot but she's working on that. Though you can tell that right now ballads are more her strong suit (IMO).

-BoA;s pretty good too. She's got slow songs and more dance songs. Some of her slow songs are really great, even her new stuff.

Hmm and random recommendations, band/group with great female vocal leads
These guys can be boardline J-rock but I think most people would label their stuff J-pop
Do As Infinity (dibanded) - vocal female lead now does stuff under her own name which is Van Tomiko
Day After Tomorrow (disbanded)

These guys, to me they're the more mellow bands with some nice compositions for great vocals
The Brilliant Green (disbanded) - vocal female lead now does stuff know as Tommy Heavenly6 or Tommy February6
ZARD
The Indigo (I think these guys disbanded too, not sure)
Garnet Crow
Every Little Thing

These guys aren't really bands but some of their songs are really really good.
See-Saw
Fiction Junction YUUKA

And there's aways sampling music off the community blog here.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but definitely try YUI. Most people who like Ai like her, for some reason. Including me! Giggle
ZONE! Oh my gosh! You need to hear ZONE! You should check out some of their PVs on youtube or something, like GOOD DAYS has an adorable video. Or true blue, or Daibakuhatsu no.1
Definitely try Akashi, too. Nod
And if you like them, you should try MARIA, which has their bass player, Maiko, because ZONE disbanded a while ago... Sad

I also like YounHa. Smile I'm surprised someone hasn't recommended her already! You should check out Houkiboshi and/or Te wo Tsunaide. And maybe Hakanaku Tsuyoku. But Houkiboshi first. Love

Um...Arashi? Laughing I dunno...
I think you have plenty to try out already. So have fun with your listening! Wink

I would recommend BoA, a kpop, jpop princess.
and also, Rie fu, I doubt that many people know about her. But she composes her music like Ai, she is currently an Art-major student in England. She has a really tranquil voice.
Next would be ayaka, her debut single "I believe" was an instant hit, partly due to the fact that it is the theme song for the Jdorama "Rondo". I didn't like her at first, (like how I didn't like Ai at first) but I became really into her music for some reason, I guess, like how people describe her voice, she sings with absolute and unique sincerity filled with messages that she wants to convey to listeners.
Last but not least, OLIVIA, her career was on a hiatus for about two years, but she made a quite successful comeback with her single "a little pain" (inspired by Reira), ending theme for NANA the anime. Her style is more toward rock and punk. Her voice gives a magical feeling, and because her music style, personal experiences and her background really drew herself close to the character Reira, many have said that OLIVIA would have been a better choice to portray the character Reira in NANA the movie. (Personally I believe so, as well.)

These are the artists that I think are quite worth recommending. But of course there are much more talented artists out there. It really depends on whether you can make yourself connect to their music or not.

Love

Oh my... Difficult question. But I don't think Koda Kumi is anything like Ai Otsuka, her style is so much more R&B/Hip-Hop.. I think... Maybe Maki Goto? But her voice isn't as strong as Ai's. I don't know, LOL.

Hey, I am relatively new to pop in general, so I don't have a clue where to expand to next. I found Otsuka Ai by luck, and found that pop can actually be decent music (English language pop tends to be a bit crap in my eyes). I have heard of Ayumi Hamasaki, etc but I am not sure who is the next best Japanese pop artist after Otsuka Ai, or who is similar in singing style, etc.

Any recommendations would be highly appreciated

Thanks

mimika - She does sweet JPOP. Sometimes her voice is a bit like Ai's, and her songs "Let's Hitori Party" and "Oudon" remind me a little of Ai. She's sort of new, so doesn't have a lot of songs just yet...

early Perfume - Before they did trance-y, techno-y, dance-y stuff they did more of idol pop. Their singles "Kareshi Boshuuchuu" and "OMAJINAI★Perori" are really sweet. "Sweet Donuts" and "Vitamin Drop" are a lot less techno-y and more sweet too! Their newer stuff is really addictive too though, if you want that.

Tommy february6 - Something about her behavior reminds me of Ai, but I don't know why. Her theme is 80s pop...It might sound "bad" but the songs are really, really good, and her cheerleaders are funnyish.

Those are some who sort of remind me of Ai. But, others who don't are still good too:

Kawashima Ai, Kumaki Anri, Otake Yuki, Angela Aki, Hirai Ken, Takasugi Satomi, Mana Kana, Stephanie, meg, Rin', and more I can't think of right now. Others have already been posted, I think.

Kumaki Anri & Otake Yuki are my absolute favorites! Their music is very relaxing and beautiful.
Otake Yuki does Japanese covers of English songs sometimes too, like Scarborough Fair, and some of her songs have a Celtic feel to them, like Nemuru Kujaku. Rin' I love because they blend traditional instruments with modern instruments. If you want samples of anything, I can upload! Nod

Cool, well that is quite a list there Giggle - Thanks a lot! Smile

I will look into them, but this kind of music proves rather difficult to find Sad

Also, does anyone want to recommend a definitive Ayumi Hamasaki album (or compilation maybe?) as I am wanting to hear some of her stuff, just I don't really know where to start - Such an impressive discography! hmm

Much appreciated Smile

Tom

Ayumi? I think "RAINBOW" is her best CD. I liked nearly every song on it.
"I am...", "Duty", "LOVEppears" and "(miss)understood" are really. really great too.
I'm not too much for her singles, but "SEASONS" is really great, because alone "SEASONS" is a great song, but the acoustic orchestra version is just gorgeous, and it also has "TO BE"'s acoustic ochestra version on it too, which is also gorgeous.

Daniel.Infinity: Sorry for being biased? ^^' Most of my favorite artists are girls. But Hirai Ken is a guy!

Yea Ken Hirai is good.

I like CHEMISTRY too, these 2 are pretty much on the same track.

Gackt and T.M.Revolution are kind of nice too, not too sure of other male singers Tongue
