Wow that's really shocking! If that is for attention then they must have been either plain stupid or really lacking any kind of attention (i.e. on the verge of insanity )
Ooops, I look at this thread and feel my point about sleazy music has started some huge debate . I know many people have said since then that it was a generalisation, so I will just answer everyone at once, but I do agree I was generalising, just the modern music I do hear is...well...just plain crap (another generalisation for you guys to get arguing about again )
Also, I agree that it isn't just American music - Of course it is everywhere, because apparently "every country wants to become Westernised", therefore losing it's distinguishing culture, which is really sad . Anyway, the American culture is far more glamorised (sorry, I'm not necessarily saying it's a bad thing for any of you Americans out there ), which others will adopt into their culture - e.g. this Koda Kumi you talk of *looks blankly* (sorry I'm not a Jpop fanatic )
october wrote: ^ I know what you mean. A lot of the kids are wild and loud at my school, or like to disrespect the instructors just for fun and a few laughs. I know that if their parents were sitting in the same classroom--despite what some of them claim--they wouldn't act the same at all.
Cool do Americans refer to teachers as "instructors"? Bit random for me to ask, but you know
october wrote: I wonder what music will be like in 10 years from now Tongue
I don't really want to imagine
october wrote: My dad is a big metal/old rock fan, and the stuff he plays is better than nowadays' radio-rock too.
Wicked, that's really cool. My dad likes AC/DC and stuff like that, which I used to enjoy, but now I kinda go for a bit more meaningful rock (progressive, etc), but that's still cool . I wish I shared more musical styles with my parents
KerushiiAi wrote: But the vast majority of what's "popular" is, like the rest of you mentioned, vulgar and sex-driven. It's completely demeaning and I don't like it. It makes boys jerks and perverts.
haha
Yeah I agree, but I think the effect on girls can just be as bad - The UK has quite a few...how shall I say it...tarts?
But still, it's amazing how much of an impact music can have on people! I just couldn't imagine 20-odd years ago when rock/metal was the "cool" music to be into [pre-rap/hip-hop]. I just can't imagine it, due to all the clothing styles today based upon musical influences, etc.
By the wayxiaolingkia, I listened to a bit of Death cab for Cutie - They were OK, I will have to hear some more though. I will try to listen to some SUM 41 over the next few weeks too! Thanks for the recommendations!
I don't really have any for you really
I guess you could try some good 'ol classics such as Lynyrd Skynyrd or Led Zeppelin, or maybe if you want to go a bit more progressive-style go for some Dream Theater (probably too "heavy" for most people) or Genesis or Pink Floyd. I'm sure you've probably already heard of most of them, but then I kind of listen to fairly mainstream stuff. Ah well - It makes it easier to find

@ october
Yes, exactly. Those kids talk tough but they really wouldn't act so rowdy if their parents were there. And they wouldn't even act that way if their friends weren't there. A lot of the time the little idiots are just trying to show off.
Haha, yeah, I haven't been offended by what you've said, don't worry. (I can't speak for the others though)
Plus, after what music we're exposed to, it's not quite so easy to offend people

@ xiaoling
Uhm...Cialis is a pill for Erectile Dysfunction (like Viagra )
The kids slitting their wrists thing is pretty messed up, but it really doesn't surprise me. I know people at school who've shown off the scars on the backs of their forearms almost like they were proud of them. It's really...creepy...Yeah, there are better ways to get attention. (Get straight A's, maybe? )
Yeah, exactly. And even if the kids don't hear the cuss words in the music, they're still gonna hear them eventually.
@ Tom
Haha, if you go back a page or so from your first post, you can see posts from me back in January pretty much yelling about the same garbage. I just...went away for a while
And you're right, I mentioned the stupid girls somewhere too. I suppose I just complain about the boys more. It's like that P!nk song... "Stupid Girls" It pretty much sums them up...
Yeah, seriously, I can't imagine it either. It must've been a good time to live though. My mom often tells me that I was born in the wrong decade and I woulda fit right in during the 80's (But the hair and shoulder pads are like... ) |

@tom: glad you found death cab okay!=) oh and if you prefer pop punk rock-ish feel, then get sum 41's Underclass Hero, if you prefer some elements of metal, then get their Chuck album. i personally prefer Underclass Hero though, cos i prefer punk pop-rock!=)
lol@kerushii - stupid girls! haha! yeah, that's a cool idea - straight As. there's always news about the top students of the major exams every year. they get featured and interviewed. nice way of getting attention huh=) yeah sometimes i wish i was born in the 70s or 80s! i'd love the disco era or punk-rock era!! |

Tdclarke: No, no way! Your posts/generalisations didn't start a debate. To be truthful, I didn't really notice your posts enough to see that they were. I just skimmed the thread, since it's so long.
I wasn't deliberately attacking anyone, because actually, I agree with nearly everything said here, and it's the same story everywhere. There are even American politicians and activists who publicly complain about our music industry and its bad influence on some of America's youths. I must be confusing now, so sorry. Basically what I say is I agree that a lot of America's mainstream music is going down the toilet, but I disagree that every piece of music to come from America is crap. Therefore I don't hate it, and I listen some, but I don't exactly hold it as my favorite type of music and I'm not oblivious to its vulgarity. If I loved American music so much, I wouldn't be so lost in the world of JPOP, don't you think?

I don't know. I like to say instructor, but I don't know about other Americans.

Newbie here. -wavewave- |D
As stated above, I don't think that every piece of American music is bad. There are those rare ones that catch your attention. I think that once you start listening to Asian music, you find out how deep the meaning is and think,
"Woah. American music isn't quite like this."
For me right now, I really like Kanye West. Coming from someone who rarely ever likes rap, he's always caught my attention since his debut. I think his lyrics are meaningful. |

haha @ october about the j-pop comment! yeah, well, most of my favourite music still comes from America, but i seldom listen to the 'popularized' music that're always played on the radio and stuff so its good!!
Hi MaiLuv! WELCOME! WELCOME!=) yeah there's the minority that are really good with meaningful lyrics. but most of the popular ones are mainly crappy and are famous because.. well i dont know why but yeah! |

I wonder about that too? Why a lot of things that are popular, sometimes are so weird...

@october: haha, you changed your picture=) yup! maybe they could be famous because of the very fact that they are crappy? haha! |

@ ling
We should invent a time machine and travel back to live then!
Have you heard the song Stupid Girls? Or read the lyrics?
Yup, and if you try a little bit, As aren't that hard. And it feels pretty good too
@ october
Yeah, I agree with your statement also. I agree with most said in this thread too, so it's more of a discussion than an argument.
@ MaiLuv
Welcome to Ch-Ai (as we like to call it)!
Yeah, I've actually heard a song or two from him, and the lyrics of one did have meaning to them. It was just really depressing is all...
@ ling, october
Yeah, some things are just popular...it's odd that people listen/like whatever it is...but just keep in mind, things never stay popular for too long. Like even now, hip hop/rap isn't as popular as it was 2 years ago, and emo music was pretty popular this year. So maybe someday decent, meaningful music will be popular! |

yeah you make sense about the diff eras of music! i just hope that proper decent songs will become the next big thing soon instead of songs that are going promiscuous girlllll wherever you areeeeee!! |

^ Haha, yeah, it is a weird song But parts of it are painfully true
Yeah, I hate that song Promiscuous I remember when it was really popular...
Also, I don't know if you guys heard, but Kanye West's mother passed away a few days ago.
After MaiLuv mentioned him, I thought about it a little, and his lyrics are decent. Most (maybe all?) of them aren't vulgar. And I saw him and his mom on the Ellen DeGeneres show a while ago. She seemed like a great lady, and he seemed to really love her.
So my condolences to her (Kanye's mom's) family and friends. |

I haven't prevented? =D
If I have a good mood I'm listening to Fort Minor, Linkin' Park (especially their last album), Fall Out Boy. I find them very positive, but...
If I depressed or have bad (sad) mood I'm listening to Shakira or Yui...
(Sorry, the last one isn't English at all) |

@kerushii: whoa, that sucks! my condolences to them as well! and yes i can't stand nelly furtado now - its like sex really seems to sell! many great female artists are "trying out something new" and going for the "im hot, buy my cd" path! artists like rihanna and nelly furtado! it's just degrading, just as bad as the guys who sing about women in a demeaning way!
@BrOKzzZ: welcome to channel ai!=) no problem - yui's good! haha! i like fall out boy too!! |

@Tdclarke:
usually, teachers are referred to teachers in the US, although instructors is a term that is also certainly used but it is less common and is generally considered more formal.
educators is another term that is used by higher-level speakers, such as school administrators, superintendents, politicians (sometimes), etc.
i personally prefer the term "professor", but that only refers to a college/unversity-level teacher of course. "professor" just sounds professional
and it's a very possible career path for me at the moment.
ah, sorry, i digress.
regarding american music, i generally listen to what can be called "piano pop" or "piano rock"
artists that i like of this genre include:
Jack's Mannequin, Ben Folds, The Fray, Coldplay
i also get my share of the latest R&B and rap music from the radio and such. |
