So is there any people here on Channel-Ai who have seen this trilogy made by Park Chan-Wook? The movies are Korean and really violent so have that inmind if you're going to see them. So it's a trilogy but not with a continuing story (like LOTR/Star Wars).
Note: Not the actual DVD covers...
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
This is the story of Ryu, a deaf man, and his sister, who requires a kidney transplant. Ryu's boss, Park, has just laid him off, and in order to afford the transplant, Ryu and his girlfriend develop a plan to kidnap Park's daughter. Things go horribly wrong, and the situation spirals rapidly into a cycle of violence and revenge.
OLDBOY
An average man is kidnapped and imprisoned in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. He then is released, equipped with money, a cellphone and expensive clothes. As he strives to explain his imprisonment and get his revenge, he soon finds out that not only his kidnapper has still plans for him, but that those plans will serve as the even worse finale to 15 years of imprisonment.
Lady Vengeance
Lee Geum-Ja, at the age of 19, goes to prison for the murder and abduction of a child on behalf of her accomplice Mr. Baek, only to find out that she is betrayed. While in prison, she carefully prepares for her revenge by winning the hearts of her fellow inmates with her kindness, thus earning herself the nickname 'kind Ms. Geum-Ja'. Upon her release from prison after 13 years, she finally sets out to seek revenge on Baek, with the help of her former prison mates.

For me OLDBOY is the best of the three movies but Lady Vengeance is just as good. I've only seen SfMr.V once (yesterday) so that might grow on me if I watch it some more. Like I said earlier these movies are really violent with alot of blood and cruelty.
So have any of you seen them and what do you think? |

| I still haven't got round to watching Lady V but I loved Oldboy and it was actually the first Asian film I ever saw. Mr Vengeance was also very good but it didn't have the same effect on me that Oldboy did. I really need to go back and watch them all in the same week because it was too long ago that I watched those two films. |

I finally watched Lady Vengeance. Now that was a good film!
There are too many positives to mention. I will say that the camera work was impeccable as always from Park Chan Wook. Usually I'll notice at least one bad shot in a film but never with that guy!
As usual I have to point out a negative English speakers in Korean/Asian films...... dear oh dear. The little girl was... ok except for the "Yes! No!" scene but the Australians were awful, especially when drunk. I guess Koreans don't notice it but it's a shame we have to endure it. I won't go on to mention JSA or the guy at the end of Sekai no chuusin
Apparently the Vengeance Trilogy Box Set is out in the US at the end of October. I can't wait! Then I can finally watch them all again. |

If they could have subbed the english that they talked... Everytime Lee Geum-Ja said something you almost had to rewind and try to figure out what she said. (I have the UK version of the DVD so no subtitles when they talk english). |

| Ah yes I forgot about that. Choi Min Sik's English was good enough to tell what he was saying but at the end of the film when she's talking to Jenny I don't know what she said. Something about white. It was only one sentence though and the imagery was enough to know what was being felt. |

Oldboy is the greatest movie ever and anyone that says otherwise is a heathen.
In my opinion.
The other 2 are okay... Lady Vengeance is good.
Geum-ja is the coolest character since Oh Dae Su.
Sympathy for Mr Vengeance was a bit of a let-down for me after seeing Oldboy first. |

I've seen most of Oldboy (haven't finished it 'cause the subs I have died halfway through the movie) and it was pretty awesome. That Beat-em'-up kind of sequence is just amazing.
I have Lady Vengeance in my HD, but I've been pretty lazy. Looks damn cool, tho.

| Wow, can't believe I didn't see this. I know I talked about watching them somewhere else in the forum but I can't recall where. I've only seen the last two and in reverse order so I guess the next step is to watch Mr. Vengeance. I really enjoyed both of them, but Oldboy really struck an awesomeness chord in me. |

The Vengeance Trilogy is superb! However it irritates me when you get the average American who says how much he/she likes Oldboy, and never mentions the prequel/sequel. They deserve to be recognised because they are all equally as good as each other!
Asia really holds the key to good cinema at the moment, as American films for the past 10 years of more have been generally terrible (minus a few classics such as The Green Mile and Sin City).
Amazing films though - Almost the Quentin Tarantino movies of Korea!
Also, if you liked this film, I highly recommend A Bittersweet Life (from the director of A Tale of Two Sisters). Amazing film! Follows the same kind of story of revenge like the vengeance movies.
