That's true, though not surprising really. Look at all the publicity stunts. There are adds everywhere (did you see the big billboard in harajuku for Love Jam?) and she has appeared so many times on tv for SMILY. She is getting so much exposure that it is no wonder her sales are increasing.

according to this website, http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~yamag/ohtukaai.html
Momo no hanabira sold around 45,000 (that's 31,000 for the CD only version and another 14000 for the CD+DVD version), Sakuranbo sold 509,000 and Kuroge Wagyu...yen sold 145,000 copies. And for some reason, the Sakuranbo encore press sold 58000... weird. but this site is pretty reliable since it also lists the sales figures of many many other J-pop artists if you navigate around.
I noticed that Ai's single sales sold at around 100,000+ after Sakuranbo ascent. I wish that with Smily going to 250,000 and hopefully reaching the 300,000 mark, Neko ni Fusen and Planetarium would reach the same, if not higher sales figures.

Regarding BoA, BoA's sales actually declined during the Double-Rock-with you-Be the one era as reflected by the sales of the Love & Honesty album, which had these three songs and Shine We Are in it. Of BoA's 4 major album releases, this album sold the lowest. I'm guessing the Japanese didn't like BoA's rocker/tough girl image shown in her 3 singles and their PVs. But once she presented herself again as a sweet/charming lady (Quincy, Merikuri, Do The Motion), the Japanese got hooked with her again as shown in the increase in sales leading to the million-seller Best of Soul. So I guess Avex should know by now that BoA's image is a very critical determinant of her single and album sales.

^ Interesting outlook. Maybe that's why Ai is so popular since she always sweet and cute =)

More people bought LOVE PUNCH than LOVE JAM...hmm. Most likely because of "sakurambo"s popularity, though. It looks like SMILY is going to be picking up. I don't think it'll reach "sakurambo" but I think it'll come pretty close. It's good that she's getting more popular now. Maybe her fourth or fifth album will reach the million mark because I don't think that the next album will do it quite yet. We'll have to wait and see...

I know this website as well! I think it's even more reliable than Oricon for total sales and especially sales out of the top 30 Tongue SMILY sold 272 228 copies.. I think the final sales will be a little less than 300 000 something like 290 000 copies. Neko ni fuusen may pass the 150 000 mark, but I'm not sure about 200 000. Usually Ai's ballads and slow songs don't sale more than her fast songs. I'm not sure about Planetarium though.

Listen to my heart got high sales because it was already popular since she had released it before in Korean so people had already heard her music and got to love it.

LISTEN TO MY HEART was a JAPANESE SONG 1st. it was released as a SINGLE in japan in january '02. the single is regarded as the song that made BoA famous in japan. thus, the ALBUM "LISTEN TO MY HEART" was released with much success in march '02. "LISTEN TO MY HEART" didnt get a korean version until september '02

BoA Album Sales

LISTEN TO MY HEART: 932, 000
Jumping into the World: 13,000
ID; Peace B: 13,000
No.1: 14,000
Peace B.REMIXES: 62,000
VALENTI:1,249,000
Next World: 194,000
LOVE & HONESTY 654,000
K-POP SELECTION: 35,000
BEST OF SOUL: 1,003,000

Jumping into the World (13,000), ID; Peace B (13,000) and No.1 (14,000) were all KOREAN albums released in japan, thus the low sales. Next World (194,000) was a REMIX album

btw, 'SMILY/biidama' has just passed the 280,000 mark
and, 'neko ni fuusen' sold around 60,000 1st week

1 thing i noticed btwn otsuka ai n BoA is that:

BoA single sales=Otsuka Ai single sales (more or less the same)
BoA album sales=Otsuka Ai album sales X2

^i guess japan likes more upbeat songs, especially during the summer (happy days vs. kingyo hanabi) as for daisuki dayo vs. happy days, those sales were pretty close to me

Yeah, I guess people do seem to like upbeat songs more, though I like slow songs just as much. All of Ai's slow songs are really good though, in my opinion, none of them are boring, like some slow songs. I'm surprised Kuroge didn't do better than that, that's one of my favorite Ai Otsuka singles. Her singles really are quite up there in the charts. Looking at this, and looking at Morning Musume's sales, wow. Just, wow!! Smile

I fink that Lainay is right! Sakuranbo is amazing! I am pretty suprised that Kingyo Hanabi is not up there b/c its such a touching song...all of ai's songs are touching...they all reach their her fans in a different way...i realli enjoyed all of her songs so far...luv her so much...

KEEP IT UP AI ^^ Boogie
