Set in World War II on the island of Iwo, the story focuses on a young baker, Saigo (portrayed by Kazunari Ninomiya), who was conscripted to fight for Japan. The commandng officer, Lieutenant General Kuribayashi (potrayed by Watanabe Ken), lands on the island later in order to set up strategies and lead the army (well duh). The movie was a counterpart to Flags of our Fathers shown entirely from the Japanese viewpoint.
Overall, I found this movie amazing. It was almost flawless and the acting was simply superb, particularly by Kazunari. There were points where I laughed, points where I almost cried and parts where it made me jump. It had a good message behind it (as most war movies usually do these days). I also felt that it didn't quite lean to either side being the heroic one so I liked the relatively unbiased nature of it.
I'd rate this movie a 9.5/10 and I highly recommend everyone to watch it. It has it's small scenes of gore so if you can't handle that then maybe you'd wanna look away for those small segments, but it never goes overboard with it thankfully. |

I've watched both movies (Flags & Letters).
I think Letters from Iwo Jima fairs better out of the two. It has as you've said great acting and it's definitely a must watch.  |
