This is mainly because the Japanese kanji system is composed of both traditional and simplified Chinese characters. From what I heard, it is easy to determine meaning from the radicals in traditional Chinese, however, it is the complete contrary for simplified. A lot of Taiwanese people I know despise the simplified system calling it "stupid" and "meaningless"...
But also, occasionally the Japanese stick either a completely new meaning onto the kanji or they just add another to it so while the main meaning could be worked out, there could be some others. |

Hahaha, oh they sure do....the kanji for 'watashi' is the character for 'plant' in chinese. My friend from Fu Jian had explained this to me after laughing at me for something I did (which I won't get into =P).... |

Yes and no, as far as the kanji method.. What Heisig teaches is imaginative memory. It's associating the character with an image or story in your mind. It's a memory technique that uses a different area of the brain, and for me it makes things a lot easier to remember.. I've seen methods that actually draw a picture to help remember the kanji.. Heisig's method places the burden of memory solely on the reader, and offers no pictures to use as crutches, allowing each individual to use his/her own imagination to fix the kanji in his/her own mind. These associations do not stay in the mind forever. Rather, as the characters are seen more and more often, the pictures fade and the meanings automatically come to mind. I couldn't tell you most of the memory techniques that were used to teach me the kana, but I never forget them now, and it took precious little writing and drilling to get me there.. I'm finding the same to be true for the 100+ kanji I've learned so far. There's precious little pain in the process, and with time being an issue for me, the method is nothing shot of miraculous. I'll admit that I'm not pleased with not knowing the readings for the kanji that I've learned, but I'm going to take a leap of faith and try out this method. I believe that while it's unorthodox, it's more about how much effort I'm willing to expend. A year is a long time, but if I'm successful and can manage to learn every character in one short year, then learning the meanings in another year will not be a problem for me.
The Genki series did look pretty decent. I actually got my first look of it over the holidays when a friend showed me his text from his college course.. I've already spent enough cash on texts though, so I think I'm gonna stick with Busy People and see if I can get some return on my (substantial) cash investment, haha. Thanks for the encouragement! Whenever my motivation is in trouble, I always play some Ai videos and ask myself the question, "What would you say to her if you met her?" My answer for now is that I'd stammer and not know enough grammar to talk to her, so that keeps me going. ^^ |

it's very useful..and uses a good method to teach japanese because it teaches you to think in japanese...instead of trying to stucture sentences from english to japanese. |

Japanese courses are few and there is a general indifference for Oriental culture.
Actually, I am learning Japanese using a grammar book and a vocabolary, but without a clear and good method. |

Hey guys, this is a reach out for help! If anyone could assist me with translating these lines into something that actually makes sense (ie tell me in english what she is trying to say) then I'd appreciate it. I'm working on a translation of it now for my first Channel-Ai blog submission and there are a few lines that I'm kinda stumbling over. If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it! (and you'll get a special mention, if that means anything to you  )

あまりにもファンタジックなバックを作っちゃうと、ただファンタジックなだけで終わっちゃうから。“浮かれちゃった子”っみたいな（笑）。

So, this song is definitely aimed at women. I want the girl to listen to this song as [if it's] her own, and I want her feelings for the person most important to her to warm.

| Oh wow thanks! I mostly had problems with the first one but you settled it as though it were nothing I can understand what Otsuka Ai is saying in the second but I'm just not sure how to put it into words in English haha. And the last one, looks like I did have the right idea, just wasn't too sure what the よって was. Anyway, thanks for your help, I'll also keep looking into those other ones too! |

| I'm a first year Japanese student, and I'm planning to buy a Japanese dictinoary soon. I want to hear your opinions on different dictionaries. I'm considering buying a Nelson, but I kinda want to have an electronic dictionary too.. What do you think about electronic dictionaries? |
