[I *love* that movie, eventhough it turns me into a sobbing mess...] Crying

As for the song, it appears that she is singing about floating off the surface of the Earth because she is so elated by love (with the help of some 'rocket sneakers'). It also seems like she is thanking/loving the Earth as well... Love
The phrase that she keeps singing to end the chorus is ??? ( ??????, chikyuu gou) which roughly means "Earth Sign/Mark."
I'm not sure what she means by this. Perhaps like 'Peace Sign' but for the Earth? Confused

Source[/list]

I think this is a song to convey her love to mother earth.
and i think ??? here actually is a name ai-chin gave to mother earth.
coz japanese like to name their ships or battleships as "xx?" .
So i think she's trying to say that our mother earth is actually a spaceship carrying us across the universe.
Thats just my interpretation it might be wrong though. Tongue Tongue

MASSIVE NEWS FOR EVERYONE TO FEAST ON!!!!

i firstly translated the BONUS track on this single "空とくじら" as being "Sora to Kujira", which means "the sky and the whale", but after much study, i have come to the conclusion that the title is in fact "KARA to Kujira" Which directly translates to "EMPTY WHALE" making more sense than SKY AND WHALE Wink!

Enjoy!

@ Kennyronzo:
I like your 'spaceship' idea! Giggle That is a very Ai idea/stance to take.

I apologize if my original post wasn't clear enough. Looking back at what I wrote I was quite muddled in my explanation...
In looking through the lyrics, I felt the *way* the song was written was intentionally ambiguous -- the style of which was a traditional love song, but also specifically one to the Earth itself. The latter is even more apparent in a translation like sljinu's. One could probably split up the stanzas and alternately they could work in completely different songs.
Again, because of Ai's dedication to environmental causes, the "Earthly" [ Giggle ] interpretations are sound ones.

Unfortunately, I cannot see the kanji you typed in your post. Confused (Perhaps it is due to the character set you are using...?)
I think you are discussing 号 ( ごう , gou)?
I'm not familiar with ship names, but that is interesting. I've only heard of the use of -Maru for ships...

@ cascade gonpory:
I also considered that direction for translating the title in my previous post, however you have overlooked the presence of と/to.
"Empty Whale" shouldn't be 空くじら, but rather 空くじら.
While the concept of emptiness can't be completely thrown out (in Japanese, the two ideas are intimately connected), it does seem like the less likely of the two.
Of course, all of this is moot until the actual song and lyrics are released. Laughing Nod

@ZYZZYVA

I understand Smile

I thought that myself with the 'to' (and), i translated on babel fish JUST to make sure i was correct, yet THAT site translated the line into "Empty Whale" rather than "Empty AND whale" which i was confused about ^-^

~からとくじら~

????????

Perhaps it really does mean "The Sky And the FLYING Whale"
As creative as Ai, i think a song about "A flying Whale and the Sky" doesn't sounds that weird. In fact ,I can already imagine a "storybook" like PV similar to "yumekui" already.

Or

It could be about a "Whale that dreamed of reaching the sky"

The name "Sky and the Whale" doesn't seems as strange to me.
We can't be certain for now, why not we wait and see!! Giggle
Lets hope that it can really surprises us! hehe Giggle Giggle

@ZYZZYVA

My apologies, i was indeed disscussing about ? ( ?? , gou),
the kanji that u mentioned above, it display correctly when i was typing it,
but once i click submit, it turns to "???" for some reason, i tried to change it back but failed.
so sorry if it seems confusing.

Flying hollowed whale? BRING IT ON! (I'm picturing a giant whale zeppelin crashing in a fiery explosion like the Hindenberg, for some reason.)

But yeah, just echoing the translation thing, 空く means to become empty, but since とis between 空 and く, it kinda nullifies it, I think. That and くじら translates to "whale", whereas... as far as I'm aware, じら on its own doesn't necessarily translate to anything specific. Could be wrong though, my Japanese is horrible.

Gah!
You beat me to it, pon pon! Laughing

@ cascade gonpory:
Ah. Yeah, Babelfish isn't the most reliable translation site out there. If you use it, it's always a good idea to send what came out back through again and see if it matches (Jpn>Eng, Eng>Jpn).
Plus, the use of the different pronunciations of kanji follows certain rules (albeit confusing ones) which Babelfish either does not know or cannot follow.

I know, for Ai, it wouldn't be strange at all... (Neko ni Fuusen & CHU-LIP anyone...?) Shifty Giggle
In line with the Earth-Oriented Rocket Sneaker, I'm totally picturing a song about a whale who desperately dreams of flying through the sky. Or maybe even a whale who's fallen in love with the sky...? Kinda like an old world myth/folktale. Love

*Sigh.* But alas, we must wait.
I think you have the right philosophy for all this speculation ridiculousness, though. Nod

As for those question marks, I'm not sure but perhaps it's a problem with your browser...? Confused
This old thread has some tips that may or may not help.
