Who knows, HD might be announced later. If I am not mistaken, HD for 4th Anniversary wasn't announced initally?

the initial announcement of the 4th Anniversary concert videos had all the details of the DVD, the HD DVD and the Blu-ray versions. i guess it is possible a Blu-ray version could come later, but it is not the way it was announced before. therefore i would suspect it is unlikely. which is a shame, because since then, the HD formats have been rationalised to just one - HD DVD is dead. so i would have thought that would make it more likely Avex would continue with the Blu-ray option.

¥5,990 is what i paid for the Blu-ray 4th Anniversary concert. given the choice, i would prefer a concert-only Blu-ray to the First Press DVD.

i wonder though, if the Avex marketing department have painted themselves into a corner over this. they want to charge a high price for the First Press DVD - and ¥5,990 is probably the upper limit they know people will be prepared to pay. so how much more can they charge for a "Premium" HD version, which is six times the quality? (1920x1080 / 720x480 = 6) and if they do strip the HD version down to just the concert they will be guilty of hypocrisy because everyone will know the Blu-ray disc could easily fit the extra footage. so how much would they charge? ¥8000? ¥9000? this would clearly be outrageous and unjustifiable. but if they sold it at ¥5,990 then people would (rightly) say: "why are we paying so much for the DVD version when the Blu-ray one is the same price?"

The DVD has confirmed that the 3D parts of the concert will be presented as 2Ds in the DVD...kind of disappointing...but still can't wait to see it Love Love Love

There is no way i'm paying 20$ + for a limited edition that only really has a bonus disc. That is kind of a rip off. Usually when limited editions come with a bonus disc aren't they just 6 to 10$ extra? So much money Avex is trying to sniff out of their fans. Surprised Avex are so evil sometimes, I swear that is why I prefer Sony.

I agree with you pon pon. I didn't realize your compairson of the blu ray and limited edition until I checked but I can't imagine how much money they will sell the blu-ray version for (if they do plan to sell one). However looking at Mika's recent live dvd, they added 1,000 more yen for the blu-ray version making it 5,800. Avex are probably thinking "fans will buy Ai dvd's, her sales are really good for DVD's so why not jack up the price for the limited edition." No

Anyway, I doubt i'll be buying this live dvd at all since the setlist sounds great up until 12 then after it's all the repetitive happy-fun concert ending songs minus the "Pocket" songs which I really don't like any of the "Pocket" single songs. It seems the last concert I was impressed with was her very first one, JamPunch.

^Well actually her recent DVD sales haven't been that great. Sure they were fantastic for her first few DVDs, but the same just can't be said nowadays. And in avex's defence, it isn't just a bonus disc, there's also a photobook and digipak, but 2k yen extra is a bit much, but I'm still going to buy it.

I don't think avex will release a Blu-Ray version for this, and the 4th anniversary one was a one-off thing. It's possible avex used the 4th anniversary to test the market and are evaluating it as we speak. Ayumi, Koda and Namie's 2008 DVD's did not have any Blu-Ray version or HD DVD versions, so I really think that's a good indication of avex's stance on Blu-Ray at present.

i agree Avex tested the market with the 4th Anniversary Blu-ray, but they might have been "testing" the market in a less obvious way. one test is that there are fans out there who are prepared to pay ¥5,990 for a concert if it is special enough. as for the test of the Blu-ray format iteslf, i dont know what the sales numbers were, but there was a shortage of the Blu-ray version for weeks after the release and YesAsia only got stock a full month later. so this tells me there was no problem with the take-up of the new format.

there is still a slim possibility that Avex will announce a Blu-ray version. after all, it hasnt been released yet. but if they do that after everyone has bought the Limited Edition DVD, then that would be truly evil.

I believe Avex is evil. In all seriousness they are always doing marketing schemes. I'm just thankful that they don't do it much to Ai Nod
<---- Off Subject --->
Ayumi's Mirrorcle World had a bonus song on one version of the single & then another bonus song on a a different version. Sure you could just download it but if your a fan you probably got stuck buying both just to have both of the songs. And don't get me started with Koda Kumi's releases. Mad Freaky single first press CD & CD + DVD comes with remixes and different booklets but if you want the instrumentals you have to order when all the first press are sold out Confused (Got stuck with 3 versions Mad and I never even got the instrumentals! Got tired of sending it back to Cd Japan for just the instrumentals) Long story short
<------- Back on Subject -----> I'm so glad they don't do that to Ai.
The price is a bit steep Confused and it's not even Blu-Ray which is an excellent point you brought up pon pon. I don't think they will bring out a Blu-Ray because as you stated they would of already announced it, as they did in the past with the Love is Born 4th anniversary. I guess it was just a test they were doing before. But to charge that much you might as well of just made it Blu-Ray, you're paying for it anyways.

If Avex was to release a Blu-Ray, then I think they would only limit to the regular edition, instead of the special edition.
Sure they could do both, but they won't attract much of the target audience anyways (I mean...if you're trying to get a Blu-Ray of this, you're practically buying a huge chunk of a ticket to go see her live, and people would start to think "Gee...is Avex gonna charge us THAT much for this? Then I rather go see her at the tour instead."
If they do release Blu-Ray for the Special Edition, then the 2nd disc would be a waste of a disc. I mean, at max that duration of 2nd disc would be at max 30-45 minutes...would be pointless and waste of money for both consumer and themselves.

I think they won't release a Blu-Ray version of this tour....most likely at least 3-4 months later, when Blu-Ray is actually really widespread + popular...similar to the marketing strategies they are doing with the old movies, they turn their best sellers into Blu-Ray, so...you can take it at that perspective...but other than that, I still think they won't release it. If they did, they should've announced it by now...just like LOVE IS BORN 2007 where they announced as HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, and DVD together.

Yes, I'm going to wait for the Overseas version too. The Japan edition is way too expensive.

I would buy the overseas version but i hate dealing with region issues on my laptop. I don't have money to buy a region free player now and i hate how PC/laptops have region restrictions, so stupid.

I understand what you mean. I'm in Europe, we're using R2 here, the overseas version will be R3. The Japan version is R2 and would be suitable for me, but it's just too expensive. I did not buy a region free DVD player, I used a hack for making my DVD region free. So buying the overseas version saves me money.

I don't know why my previous DVD's didn't work...
They're all NTSC (japanese versions)......I'm living in the NTSC region and the DVDs won't work on the DVD players...but I wouldn't want to watch it on my crappy 20" tv anyways...my LCD monitor is way clearer and my speakers are 10x better so I might as well watch it on the computer.....

if you have a computer that has region restriction, check your video card....there should be this tiny box saying NTSC/PAL/Auto (I think there was auto)....but yeah, you can change that with a small Phillips screwdriver and flick the switch

If I'm understanding you correctly, you are unable to play your Japanese DVDs on your non-computer DVD player...?

NTSC, PAL, and SECAM are not the same as Region Coding. Rather they are systems that, having to do with analog TV signals, show video at different frame rates.
Wikipedia's article on DVD Region Codes has some clear, concise info regarding the systems and how they differ from the codes.

I see you're in Canada, 1337rice.
North America uses Region 1, while Japan (despite also using NTSC) uses Region 2. Unless you have a Region 2 or Region Free DVD player, you won't be able to view the Japanese DVDs (or the Overseas ones either -- Region 3).
I think Region Coding is really stupid. Its existence is based on price discrimination -- understandable, economically, but irritating nonetheless.

Thankfully, computers can get around all this ridiculousness, though Macs do try to screw it up. A Mac will only allow a few switches between Region Codes before it permanently sets one. However, one can turn off the DVD Player so it doesn't open automatically, then use something like VLC Player to open the disc, regardless of its Region Code. Boogie
Windows users don't seem to run into as many irritating walls... Mad Wink *jealous*
